Influencing International Relations in the South China Sea Based on the China's Food Policy
Vnouček, Jeroným ; Szobi, Pavel (advisor) ; Hornát, Jan (referee)
The South China Sea region is an important area of international events. In this area, the strained relations between China and the neighboring states sharing the given sea and the United States are reflected. Within the framework of the international political discussion, a great deal of attention is directed, for example, to the issue of Taiwan, mineral deposits and international trade. However, not much attention is paid to the importance of marine fisheries for China's expansionist actions, which is the focus of this work. This thesis deals with the question, "How does China's food security affect international relations in the South China Sea?" Using the approach of neo-Malthusian theory, it is possible to monitor the food demands of the Chinese population in the context of food security affected by a degrading environment. Using analysis and subsequent synthesis, sources and information related to food and international relations are examined. The results of the work indicate that China is food-insufficient in the long term and its protein supply is strongly influenced by protein imports, fishing and fish aquaculture production. However, food and especially fish production is strongly affected by the deteriorating environment. In order to satisfy its needs, China chooses actions that violate...
From food security to food sustainability: the attitudes of the FAO
Rinaldi, Chiara ; Karlas, Jan (advisor) ; Kučerová, Irah (referee)
Tracing the evolution of the food system paradigm, this research investigates the transition from a narrow focus on food security to a comprehensive food sustainability approach. The study analyses the behaviour of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as source institutions, and their potential influence on the Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) strategies in addressing global food security challenges. Spanning from 1990 to 2019, the research examines key official documents from the institutions and relevant literature to unravel the interconnectedness between these institutions and FAO's paradigm shift. The findings shed light on the complex dynamics and interactions of international institutions and their role in shaping sustainable development policies within the food security realm.
Potravinová bezpečnost v kontextu demografického vývoje v uprchlických táborech v regionu východní Afriky
Bajtová, Kristýna
The aim of the thesis is to analyse food security in the Dadaab refugee camp. The thesis is divided into three sections: the theoretical and analytical section and the proposal. The second part analyses the origin of the refugee camp life conditions in the camp, demographic composition of the population, food security and the role of international and non - governmental organizations. The proposal section lists the possible solutions to ensure adequate food security and successful reintegration process of refugees back to Somalia.
Hunger games: Discourses of the G7 New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition in Africa
Milerová Prášková, Dagmar ; Novotný, Josef (advisor) ; Daněk, Petr (referee) ; Profant, Tomáš (referee)
The New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition was launched in 2012 as the main G7 initiative to combat hunger in Africa. Its proclaimed objective was to facilitate cooperation between selected African countries and private sector companies by promoting pro-market reforms and investments in African agriculture. However, it quietly disappeared from public space around 2015, seven years before the end of its programming period. The New Alliance can thus be considered and analysed as a case of failed policy, which has not achieved its declared goals. In this thesis, I examine the discourses of this initiative in official documents of selected G7 countries, focusing on how this initiative was constructed and framed in the wider context of their approaches to global food security and hunger. The selection of the analysed countries (USA, France, and the UK) reflects their distinct positions on the New Alliance. This analysis is supplemented by discourse analysis of western and African civil society actors who took an active role either in a New Alliance project or the anti-New Alliance campaign. I assumed that examination and confrontation of different positions of these countries with respect to the New Alliance may uncover different conceptualisations of food security and hunger in Africa associated...
Food Security and Machine Learning: Opportunities and Challenges
Hruška, Adam ; Špelda, Petr (advisor) ; Plattner, Simon Antonin (referee)
The emergence of the effects of global warming, as well as the ongoing depletion of fossil fuels and fertile soil pose a serious threat for the future of the agricultural industry. Alternatively, the continuous population growth mainly in the less developed regions highlights the future need of approximately 70-110 percent increase in the overall output of contemporary food production. While the current conventional agriculture deploys a multitude of technologies including the precision agriculture framework, the future needs of the population exceed the projected capabilities of the industry. Machine learning as the current fastest growing technology represents the potential remedy for the emerging issues, yet the extent of successful implementation remains uncertain. The thesis aims to uncover the potential future implications of implementation of machine learning based technology in agriculture through the use of the new scenario building methodology. The analysis builds on a varying set of empirical data, current state of art projects in machine learning and multiple future trend projections. Albeit the scenario building technique allows for a potentially endless number of constructed scenarios, the thesis concentrates on three main plot lines. First scenario tackles the more probable...
Vliv migrantů na změnu úrovně potravinové bezpečnosti - případová studie Demokratická republika Kongo
Pešičková, Kristýna
This Bachelors thesis deals with the changes of food safety in the Democratic republic of Congo, mainly in terms of ensuring sufficient food for the entire population of the country, including the new arrivals. The thesis is divided into a theoretical, an analytical and a proposal part. The theoretical part defines concepts related to migration, the dimension of food safety and other demographic and agricultural-economic indicators. The analytical part focuses on the analysis of selected indicators of food security influenced by the mechanical movement of the population and other demographic and agricultural-economic contexts. The proposal part contains possible solutions based on the research.
