Christian Ethics and the Victorian Novel: The Child as a Christ Figure in Oliver Twist, Silas Marner, and The Master-Christian

This diploma thesis contributes to the evolving field of religious/postsecular and ethical studies. In the first chapter, I position my thesis in the context of the religious and ethical turn of the humanities and narrow the scope of my focus to the Victorian novel, whose critical accounts were frequently misconstrued due to the application of the secularisation thesis. I then focus on the transposition of Christianity and its ethical functions from institutional affiliations to Victorian literature and literary criticism. I interpret an orphaned child as a Christ figure in three Victorian novels, whose selection illustrates the progress of the transposition from the early Victorian period to the end of the 19th century. I establish an interpretative frame, which I apply to the following analyses of the orphan character in Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist (1837- 1838), George Eliot's Silas Marner (1861), and Marie Corelli's The Master-Christian (1900). In the second chapter, I interpret the eponymous character of Oliver Twist as the Christ figure, who brings the possibility of redemption and salvation from the ineffectual government institutions and London underground. The Czech translations of Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist: A comparison of lexical means

This B. A. thesis attempts to compare the most important Czech translations of Charles Dickens' novel Oliver Twist. The considered translations are the one by Emanuel Tilsch and Emanuela Tilschová (1966), the one by Arno Kraus (1952) and the one by Ladislav Vymětal (1930). In some cases, Božena Šimková's translation (1908) and the translation by Mary Dolejší (1926) are considered among others as well. The main criteria are lexical and stylistic means used by the characters of various social groups in their speech. The thesis also analyzes how the translators dealt with various registers of the Czech language from the highest, archaic ones to the substandard, dialectical and even argotic levels. At the end of the thesis, a question is raised to what extent the main translations in consideration have followed the general development of the Czech translation arts. Another question sorts out if time is already up for a new translation of Oliver Twist, or if the last Czech version still suits its readers properly.

Charles Dickens and Mark Twain, the English and American Perspective on Child Heroes Portrayal

This diploma thesis deals with the portrayal of child heroes in English and American literature, in works of Charles Dickens and Mark Twain. The chosen novels are Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. These novels are analysed in the themes of child labour and poverty, racism, religion, the view of the world by children in contrast to the adult perspective, upbringing and education. The last chapter deals with the humour of both novelists. Thus the emphasis is put on the social aspect of the literary output of Dickens and Twain. The main aim of the thesis is to depict these child heroes and their acting in the literature of the 19th century, and to reflect the life experience of both authors.
