Two Sources on Jakub Deml’s relationship with T. G. Masaryk

The contribution describes two sources that can deepen our understanding of the relationship between Jakub Deml and T. G. Masaryk. The first consists of an official file on the legal prosecution of Jakub Deml located in the archive of the President’s Office: the file contains not just court documents from the 1930 court trial of Jakub Deml but also the President’s approval of the prosecution, a transcript of a phone call by Karel Čapek, a further testimony on Březina’s remarks, a ministry of Justice application for presidential pardon and other documents underlying the President’s change of mind and his ultimate decision to stop the prosecution. The second source of information comprises nine books by Deml (which contain seven handwritten dedications to Masaryk from the years 1927–1935) and a single book dedicated to President Edvard Beneš in 1938. These sources are to be found in the as yet uncatalogued depositions in the library of T. G. Masaryk.

Masaryk´s Concept of Realism - An Attempt for the Insight into Its Roots, Theory and Influence

Masaryk´s realism was a response to insufficient knowledge on society and its problems. In its basis was a struggle for scientific knowledge in relation to important areas of society life through methods used in anumber of disciplines. Masaryk viewed relevant and thorough knowledge about society and its problems, needs and possibilities as a condition for its positive development and foe democratization. In this respect he influenced a part of young generation.

T. G. Masaryk and his journeys to Capri 1921–1922

The contribution focuses on the journeys of president Thomas G. Masaryk to Capri at the beginning of the 1920s. Masaryk suffered from serious health problems in 1921 and therefore it was necessary for him to go abroad to recover. These were also the first trips of Czechoslovak president and they became models (i.e. in organisation) for Masaryk´s other journeys. The contribution deals with the organisation of the journeys and tries to capture day-to-day life at Capri. The influence on Masaryk´s state of health or financial background of the journeys is also mentioned in the text.

Masarykiana in Bloomington

The author presents a collection of documents regarding Masaryk family kept by the Lilly Library in Bloomington (part of the Indiana University). Valuable documents were donated to this library by social worker Ruth Crawford-Mitchel in 1963. In 1919, she helped to establish the Czechoslovak Red Cross in Prague and met Alice Masaryk there. Given, so far not arranged part contains namely a part of personal archives of Alice Masaryk (personal documents, manuscripts, press documentation), and Olga Masaryk-Revilliod (correspondence).

Issues in Masaryk´s Views on Czech Historical and Natural Law

Since the Czech politics unsuccessfully focused from the 1860s on installing the Czech State Law as the way towards greater sovereignty of the Czech Kingdom in the Habsburg Monarchy, in the 1890s Masaryk made great efforts to propose the principle of natural law as a similarly legitimate principle for achieving more independent status for the Czech nation. In broad context the article reviews complex relevant argumentation od the period.

Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk – the Life for Democracy

T. G. Masaryk is still a relevant source of scholarly ideas and methods. Especially valuable is his political realism, conception of Czechoslovak statehood and presidency. The essence of his political principles is rooted in democracy and humanistic ideals, relevant to private, public as well as national life.
