The article concentrates on the life of Charlotte Masaryk (1850-1923), wife of professor T.G. Masaryk, during the First World War, when her husband and daughter were in exile, her son Herbert died, her daughter Alice was imprisoned and her son Jan was in the Austrian army. The author describes the circumstances of T.G. Masaryk's departure for exile and the ways the family kept in touch. The relationship between Charlotta and Alice and health of Charlotte Masaryk are described. The article is based on the personal papers of Charlotte Masaryk and the family correspondence.
