The aim of this bachelor thesis is to introduce the Indonesian transgender community Waria with an emphasis on it`s current socio-cultural position. I follow the object as a part of indonesian culture and society consider it from the historical-cultural point of view. The major consideration is spend on the influence of religion and colonialism. The phenomenon of crossdressing is also included in it`s forms of dance and theatre. Subsequently I focus on the Bugis ethnic group with special regard on specific individual groups, where I describe in more detail the phenomenon bissu, which is considered probably the best known in the historical literature on transgenderism in Southeast Asia. Last but not least depiction of social-cultural linkage and important aspects for the development of the community in post-modern times.
