Motivation of breastfeeding women to donate a breast milk
MATĚJKOVÁ, Barbora
The bachelor thesis deals with the issue of motivation of breastfeeding women to donate breast milk. The thesis is divided into theoretical and research parts. The theoretical part begins with childbirth and the puerperium period. The next chapter is lactation, breast anatomy, breast milk and its composition. The topic of breastfeeding is also discussed, dealing with the importance, principles and techniques of breastfeeding, as it is important that women are informed about this issue. Breast milk banks are an important chapter. The theoretical part concludes with a subchapter on the role of the midwife in motivating breastfeeding women to donate breast milk. A quantitative method was used in the research investigation. A self-constructed questionnaire was used to collect data, which included both open and closed questions. Twenty-four questions were given, of which 17 were closed, five semi-closed and two open questions. The study population consisted of 130 breastfeeding women. The study found that 91% of the breastfeeding women were not informed by the midwives, only 9% of the respondents were informed. From the responses of the women who donated breast milk, it was found that 63.3% of the respondents donated breast milk for the good feeling of helping, only 35.7% donated breast milk for financial compensation. It was also found that 52% of the respondents had mostly learnt about breast milk donation from internet sources, while only 31% of the respondents had learnt about breast milk donation from professional staff. When given a choice of where women would prefer to donate breast milk, it was found that 46% of respondents would donate to nursing homes and only 20% to women who have difficulty breastfeeding. Two objectives were identified in the bachelor thesis, namely to find out the motivation of breastfeeding women for donating breast milk and the sources of information of breastfeeding women about the possibility of donating breast milk. Based on the identified objectives, three hypotheses were established: H1: Women who donate breast milk do so for the financial reward rather than for the feel-good factor of helping. This hypothesis was not confirmed. H2: Women who could decide to whom to donate breast milk would prefer breastfeeding institutions to women who have breastfeeding problems. This hypothesis was confirmed. H3: Women who have information about the possibility of donating breast milk got it from internet sources rather than from professionals. This hypothesis was not confirmed. The results of the research could serve as a source of information for breastfeeding women who are interested in donating breast milk. They could also be presented in professional seminars for midwives.
Maternal investment and reproductive strategy in domestic horses
Komárková, Martina ; Bartošová, Jitka (advisor) ; Šumbera, Radim (referee) ; Vlček, Kamil (referee)
The aim of my doctoral thesis is the detailed study of the behavioural and sociobiological principles associated with the period of lactation. Suckling data covering almost 80 foals of domestic horse (Equus caballus) was obtained within four years of observation in the National Stud in Kladruby nad Labem, Czech Republic. The data were evaluated together with the reproductive history of the mothers, their agonistic interactions and following analysis of the dominance position of subadult foals. The first study describes longer suckling (greater maternal care) in dominant mares compared to submissive ones. Dominant mares are also less disturbed during nursing, whereas they terminated the nursing of submissive mares more often. A possible competitive advantage for the offspring of dominant mares may arise from such behaviour. The second paper enlightens the reproductive strategy of mares facing double maternal investment; suckling of the foal and pregnancy at the same time. I found out, contrary to the expectations, that the pregnant mares neither suckled their foals less nor terminated more suckling compared to non-pregnant herdmates. They may try to compensate their suckling foal with the perspective of its early weaning due to ongoing pregnancy. In the third and fourth manuscript I studied, how...
The psychosocial factors of perinatal care in relations with the patients' satisfaction, the conduct of delivery and the onset of lactation
Takács, Lea ; Šulová, Lenka (advisor) ; Dittrichová, Jaroslava (referee)
The aim of this study is to explore the psychosocial aspects of care provided in maternity hospitals. The study is divided into three parts: i) the psychosocial aspects of care for parturients, ii) the psychosocial aspects of care for the newborn, and iii) the psychosomatic issues in obstetrics. Each part includes a review of the relevant literature and a presentation of the specific research carried out for the purpose of this thesis. The first part discusses the psychosocial competences of healthcare providers (social support, communication, providing of information, etc.), while subsequent research focuses on the psychosocial factors that influence parturients' satisfaction with perinatal care. The second part is devoted to psychological importance of birth experience for the newborn and early mother-child contact, psychosocial needs of the health-risk newborn and initiation of breastfeeding, with the research section containing the inquiry into the factors that may influence the start of breastfeeding. The last part of this study concentrates on the effects of psychological variables on the perception of pain and the course of labour. The review of the relevant literature is followed by presenting the research results that show the impact of psychosocial factors of perinatal care on selected...
Motherhood seen throw the eyes of three generations of women
Havránková, Tereza ; Levínská, Markéta (advisor) ; Presslerová, Pavla (referee)
The purpose of this thesis is to make a plot of generations changes in motherhood. The aim of the theoretical part is to introduce possible views on motherhood. It gives us a look at materhood like a social construct and a biological instinct. This part is also dealing with their reciprocal combinations. Another parts of this section is to introduce motherhood like a social role and motherhood like a sense of identity. The aim of the practical part is to collect information from mothers of three generations about their own experiences with motherhood. The interview was according to The Grounded Theory. The particular aims of this section are to discover important areas of motherhood for women of all generations, find out the generation changes in this areas and evaluate the impact of this changes on the final image of motherhood. The generation changes and important areas of motherhood are compared and discussed with theoretical findings from the first part. The conclusion of this work thesis is focused on importance of these generation changes on the final image of motherhood.
Specifics of nutrition and physical activities during puerperium and breastfeeding
Piklová, Lenka ; Starnovská, Tamara (advisor) ; Tomešová, Jitka (referee)
This thesis deals with the nutritional and physical activity issues during puerperium and breastfeeding period. It is divided into theoretical and practical part. The aim of the theoretical part is to provide a comprehensive overview on this topic; therefore it contains chapters on physiological changes of woman's body after childbirth (including metabolic changes), breastfeeding, breast milk and it also briefly touches the nutrition of the child. The chapter on women's nutrition covers energy intake, macro and micronutrients, drinking regimen, postpartum weight development and reduction, and several myths in the nutrition of breastfeeding women. The last two chapters are physical activity recommendations depending on several significant postpartum milestones and rest and sleep. The practical part consists of quantitative research and a booklet. The aim of the research was to determine the percentage of breastfeeding women and the length of the breastfeeding period, the prevalence of allergies in children and their impact on the mother's diet and awareness of the dietary modifications, the nature of breastfeeding mothers' diets, awareness of the specifics of nutrition and exercise during breastfeeding, the prevalence of myths regarding breastfeeding women's diets, and method and time period of...
Physiological prerequisites for breastfeeding preterm neonates
Dvořáková, Martina ; Zlatohlávková, Blanka (advisor) ; Burianová, Iva (referee)
The bachelor thesis focuses on the physiological prerequisites of breastfeeding in premature newborns. Breastfeeding premature infants presents significant challenges due to physiological, neurological, and developmental limitations that affect their ability to suck, swallow and breathe effectively. My main aim was to determine when infants admitted to the intensive care unit and intermediate care unit reach breastfeeding milestones. Important milestones observed include first nonnutritive sucking, first nutritive sucking and archieving full oral intake. I also investigated the type of nutrition with which infants are discharged from hospital. My thesis was divided into theoretical and practical parts. In the theoretical part I discuss the importance of breast milk and breastfeeding for premature infants, the development of sucking, the development of swallowing, and the development of breathing. I also address the coordination of sucking, swallowing and breathing. I also address the transition from tube feeding to oral nutrition. I described the work of a lactation consultant. In the practical part I have processed data of 26 hospitalized preterm infants. These infants archieved on average the first nonnutritive suck at 31+4 GA (range of values 30+0 to 33+5). The infants managed the first...
The Influence of Social Networks on Parents in Relation to Infant and Toddler Nutrition
Hromadová, Lenka ; Weidenthalerová, Edita (advisor) ; Honzejková, Kateřina (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the influence of social networks on parental decision-making regarding infant and toddler feeding. Early nutrition is critical to child development and influences future health. Parenting is a decision-filled challenge, especially with such a vast amount of information from various sources, including social media, which can cause confusion and uncertainty about the best childcare. The aim of this paper is to assess how much parents trust information from influencers compared to expert recommendations, and how social media influences their preferences regarding their children's nutrition. The theoretical section covers the basics of nutrition in the first three years of life, including breastfeeding, infant formula, and transition to solid foods. The practical part explores how parents use social networks as a source of information about infant and toddler nutrition and how this information influences their decision-making. This section also analyses trends and myths on social media. The results show that parents strongly trust pediatricians and consider them a reliable source of information on child nutrition, in contrast to low trust in advice and recommendations from influencers. This result suggests that parents tend to rely on verified experts. Providing accurate and...
Proper handling of infant nutrition in hospital facilities
Čadová, Nikol ; Průšová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Nikodemová, Hana (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with issues related to the manipulation of infant nutrition in healthcare facilities. The theoretical part of this work deals with breast milk, infant formula and its specifics, administration of infant diet, as well as manipulation of infant nutrition in pediatric wards and in the dairy kitchen. The aim of the empirical part of this work was to verify the knowledge of nurses through a research survey and to identify possible differences in the manipulation of infant nutrition in different workplaces. A quantitative research method was chosen to obtain data using a self- constructed questionnaire containing 26 questions. Out of the original 130 distributed questionnaires, a total of 74 were analysed, with 3 excluded due to incompleteness, resulting in a response rate of 59.2%. The results of the research survey showed that the knowledge and practices of nurses in manipulating infant nutrition are not uniform. The most significant statistically significant difference in respondents' answers was related to the workplace where they are employed. No statistically significant difference was found in respondents' answers in relation to their education. In conclusion, it is necessary to mention that the research survey revealed some shortcomings in respondents' knowledge and...
Evaluation of breast milk production in relation to body composition in Czech lactating women.
Bugošová, Andrea ; Hronek, Miloslav (advisor) ; Kovařík, Miroslav (referee)
The aim of this study was to evaluate the production of breast milk in relation to the body composition of Czech breastfeeding women and to compare the results to similar studies. Six breastfeeding women participated in this specific part of the longitudinal study, undergoing 4 examinations during a 9-month lactation period. Anthropometric methods were used to measure basic body parameters. Furthermore, body composition was assessed using dual bioimpedance analysis with a digital scale and spectroscopic bioimpedance analysis using the Body Composition Monitor device. According to Friedman's nonparametric paired test, statistically significant differences between the examined periods were found in BMI values (p = 0.029), BSA (p = 0.019), waist circumference (p = 0.048) and hip circumference (p = 0.031). These values fall below the significance level of 0.05. According to Spearman's correlation, breast milk production positively correlated with pre-pregnancy weight (p = 0.003, r = 0.817), pre-pregnancy BMI (p = 0.002, r = 0.847), pregnancy weight (p = 0.044, r = 0.624), bone mass measured by BIA (p = 0.020, r = 0.697), basal metabolism measured by BIA (p = 0.028, r = 0.670), FM mass measured by BIA (p = 0.034, r = 0.651), chest circumference (p = 0.003, r = 0.825), waist circumference (p = 0.025, r =...
