The image of Václav Havel in the broadcast of Radio Free Europe between 1987-1989

The aim of this paper is to examine in which context and which way did Czechoslovak editorial office refer about Václav Havel, particularly in the broadcast of Události a názory, the main opinion journalism part of the broadcast. The content analysis of archive materials has been used in order to answer the main research questions. The examined material included the written form of the broadcast of Události a názory between 1987 and 1989. The paper is divided into two parts, a practical and a theoretical one. At first the overview of the literature and the academic discourse about Václav Havel and Czechoslovak broadcast of the Radio Free Europe is introduced, followed by the overview of the historical context of the late 1980s with the focus on the United States, the Soviet Union and its satellites. The next chapter discusses the historical context of Czechoslovakia in the 1980s with the emphasis on the activities of dissent and chosen events mentioned also in the broadcast of Události a názory while referring about Václav Havel. In the following chapter the person of Václav Havel is introduced. The last chapter of the theoretical part is dedicated to the broadcast of Radio Free Europe, particularly on its Czechoslovak editorial office.
