Galdós' novel Misericordia as a cartography of Madrid

The thesis analyses the space of Madridin the novel Misericordia writtenbythe Spanish author Benito Pérez Galdós. It focuses mainlyon the descriptionof the city; its suburbs, slums and streets,and its realistic representationbecomes one of the main themes of the novel. It also aims to explain the symbolism of these places and to show their relationship to the characters themselves, who are defined by their surroundings. Specific examples are used to show how the geographical layout of the city in Misericordia corresponds to the socio-economic organizationof societyand the related issue of social mobility.
