Characterization of Submicron Aerosol in Prague by Combined ME-2 Factor Analysis of AMS Data
Makeš, Otakar ; Vodička, Petr ; Schwarz, Jaroslav ; Ždímal, Vladimír
Real-time measurement of submicron aerosol particles was performed at Prague – Suchdol site (Czech Republic) during six weeks long summer and winter campaigns in 2012-2013. Highly time and size resolved data were obtained from measurements carried out by a Compact Time-of-Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (C-ToF-AMS, Aerodyne). The retrieved data were analyzed with using the So-Fi graphical user interface which is developed by Paul Scherrer Institute (Canonaco, 2013) and is running under IGOR software (WaveMetrics). The preliminary results are presented in this abstract.

Highly Time-Resolved Aerosol Measurement at a Suburban Site in Prague
Kubelová, Lucie ; Vodička, Petr ; Schwarz, Jaroslav ; Makeš, Otakar ; Ždímal, Vladimír
Highly time-resolved measurements of atmospheric aerosols are important as they enable us to elucidate the aerosol sources and lifecycle processes (Zhang, 2011). In our study we carried out two six-week measurements of submicron fraction of nonrefractory atmospheric aerosol. The measurement was performed with 1-minute resolution and analysed with respect to influence of meteorological conditions. The measurement was done as a part of a pan-European project ACTRIS.

Aerosol Chemical Composition Studied by the Aerosol Mass Spectrometry – Identification of Aerosol Emerging during New Year´s Celebration
Kubelová, Lucie ; Vodička, Petr ; Schwarz, Jaroslav ; Ždímal, Vladimír
This study focused on finding of a marker of presence of aerosol originating during fireworks using aerosol mass spectrometer c-ToF-AMS. During the 48-hour campaign, we observed 4 episodes characterized by increased mass concentration of aerosol. Nonetheless, the main focus was placed on the episode right after the New Year's celebration. The AMS spectrometer enabled to identify fragments originating from fireworks. We found that presence of fireworks aerosol particles leads to a significant increase of the ratio m/z 39 and total organic mass. Since the increase in the fragment m/z 39 is usually connected with an increase in organic matter (i.e. with their relatively small mutual ratio), it is possible to consider the increased value of such ratio as a marker of presence of aerosol pariticles originating from firewords.

Search for Links between Organic Aerosols Measured by Aerosol Mass Spectrometer and EC/OC Analyzer
Vodička, Petr ; Kubelová, Lucie ; Makeš, Otakar ; Schwarz, Jaroslav
Carbonaceous aerosols form a major part of particulate matter suspended in the atmosphere. The organic part of aerosol represents a diverse group of substances that can be analyzed in different ways. In this work, the possible linkages between organic fractions measured by Compact Time-of-Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS; from Aerodyne) and a semi-online EC/OC analyzer (from Sunset Laboratories) were search. Each of these instruments provides a different kind of information. Organic fractions from EC/OC analyzer provide knowledges about a diferent volatility of organic carbon (OC) while AMS provide informations about a chemical composition of characteristic mass fragments. Thus, the main objective of this work was to determine whether the organic fractions from EC/OC analyzer can indirectly provide also information on the chemical composition or somehow more characterize type of aerosol.

Comparison of Source Apportionment Results from Summer and Winter Measuring Campaign at a Prague-Suchdol Site
Makeš, Otakar ; Vodička, Petr ; Schwarz, Jaroslav
Organic aerosol (OA) is the most abundant but still poorly characterized component of airborne particulate matter. This situation is even more complicated in large cities where many anthropogenic sources of primary organic aerosol (POA) are situated. In recent years, aerosol mass spectrometry has been increasingly applied to obtain highly time-resolved chemical composition of ambient aerosol. This is considerably important for clarification of organic aerosol life cycles and sources. Two measuring campaigns, which lasted about six weeks in summer 2012 and in winter 2013, were performed at suburban site Prague – Suchdol. Aerosol data were measured by Aerodyne compact time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) which is able to characterize the size resolved chemical composition of non-refractory submicron (PM1) fraction.

Characterization of Fine Particles by Aerosol Mass Spectrometer at the Prague Suburban Site During Summer and Winter Season
Vodička, Petr ; Makeš, Otakar ; Schwarz, Jaroslav
The increasing interest in the role of aerosols in the atmosphere leads to a growing need to their measurements in the environment. For this reasons, the detailed studies of aerosols were also included into the existing European project ACTRIS (www.actris.net). One of the ACTRIS part is the coordinated long-term measurement of aerosol chemistry both with Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitors (ACSM) (Ng et al., 2011) and by other types of Aerosol Mass Spectrometers (AMS) (Canagaratna et al., 2007). The measurement network includes many background stations (including urban background sites) all over Europe (http://www.psi.ch/acsm-stations/acsm-and-emep-stations). One of the participating stations was also an urban background site in Prague. This paper presents preliminary results characterizing the fine aerosol at this site during two intensive (summer and winter) measurement campaigns.

Changes in Composition of Submicron Particular Matter of Atmospheric Aerosol During 2013 New Year´s Celebration
Kubelová, Lucie ; Vodička, Petr ; Schwarz, Jaroslav
In this work we investigated rapid changes in chemical composition of PM1 fraction during the celebrations of New Year 2013. The measurements were carried out at the urban background site Prague-Suchdol. The compact Time-of-Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (c-ToF-AMS, Aerodyne), Drewnick et al. (2005), was used to analyze highly time-resolved samples of non-refractory aerosol components. We focused on four episodes with significantly elevated total aerosol mass concentration. We assume that the increased concentrations are due to: smoke plume from wood burning in Episode 1, fireworks in Episode 2, arrival of another air mass in Episode 3, and an uncategorized source of poly-aromatic hydrocarbons in Episode 4. The highest attention was given to the time interval between 00:20 and 2:20 a.m. on the New Year (marked in Figure 1 as Episode 2) as the aerosol composition was significantly affected by the occurring annual celebrations. In this period, the most significant increase in mass concentration was observed by sulfate, chlorides, and potassium (involved in the mass spectra for fragment 39). At the same time, nitrate and ammonium were unaffected. Those trends were compared to other measurements with c-ToF-AMS during annual celebrations, Drewnick et al.

Characterization of Submicron Organic Aerosol in Prague by ME 2 Factor Analysis of Summer AMS Data
Makeš, Otakar ; Vodička, Petr ; Schwarz, Jaroslav ; Canonaco, F. ; Prévôt, A.S.H. ; Ždímal, Vladimír
Real-time measurement of submicron aerosol was performed at Prague – Suchdol site (Czech Republic) during six weeks in June and July 2012. Highly time-and-size resolved data were obtained from measurements carried out by a Compact Time-of-Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (C-ToF-AMS, Aerodyne). The retrieved organic data were deconvoluted using the Multilinear Engine (ME-2) algorithm (Paatero, 1999), and analyzed with the newly developed GUI provided by Paul Scherrer Institute (Canonaco et al. in prep.). The preliminary results are presented in this abstract.
