Svatava Škodová, Ph.D. The presented thesis focuses on the composition of academic texts of non-native speakers of the Czech language in an effort to reveal the causes of their difficult comprehensibility, although they do not contain obvious lexical or grammatical errors. The main goal of this work is to clarify the specific features of the structure of academic texts of non-native speakers of the Czech language. In order to fulfil this goal, we performed a qualitative comparative analysis focusing on the theme-rheme structure of the sentence and its inclusion in the context of the paragraph and also on the thematic paragraph structure and paragraph groups. The observed phenomenon within the expression of the theme was the use of thematic progression types with regard to cohesive devices. Within the rhematic structure, we examined the expression of rheme and the use of connectives to express rhematic relationships.
