Typography of the monthly maganize žena a móda (1949-1995)

The thesis "Typography of the monthly magazine Žena a móda (1949-1995)" deals with the graphical appearance of this magazine and describes the changes in its typography. Magazine ran from January 1949 to July 1995, when it was cancelled because of financial difficulties. The aim of this thesis is to divide the years of Žena a móda's existence into periods, depending on its specific graphical appearance. This bachelor thesis outlines the historical context, technical conditions and the influence the Marxism-Leninism had on the graphic design. Moreover, the basic vocabulary of typographical terms is included. The thesis analyses the graphical appearance of the magazine periodically, with the focus on physical qualities, typesetting, typeface, headlines, front pages or advertisement. Furthermore, the graphical appearance of the world's most famous magazines is outlined briefly towards the end of the thesis, as well as the magazine's competition after 1989. This work offers a complete critical overview of the samizdat magazine Sado-Maso1 published in Prague in the years 1983-1986. I tried to make a complete overview and characteristics of the magazine - the main themes of each issue, historical, ideological and literary context of publishing of the Sado-Maso magazine. I also mention publications which were connected with the S-M magazine - independent movies, other samizdat magazines and books. In the Attachment there is article bibliography (containing indexes), covers of the Sado-Maso individual issues, interviews with authors and conterporary witnesses, copies of ,StB' documentary where Sado-Maso magazine was mentioned connected with Klín and Satan Actions. Egon Bondy's essay Zaplaťpánbů za "underground" published exclusively in Sado- Maso Nr. 7 ½ is presented here in commented edition. The goal of this work is to provide information about a not well-known part of Czechoslovak underground culture - a part which still has not been paid much attention on the side of literary history. 1 The title ,Sado-Maso' and the abreviation ,S-M' are used in the same meaning. Tte usage of composite photography in czech media - Photographs on frontpages of magazines Tyden and Reflex

Thesis called The Usage of Composite Photography in Czech Media - Photographs on Frontpages of Magazines Reflex and Týden deals with the form of photographic illustration and its role in media. The work introduces why photography is since its beggining reviewed as a realistic media, how this concept was influenced over the years by manipulation of analogue photography and how it is affected by digital manipulation thesedays. Photomontage has been used more and more on the front pages of news and social magazines since the start of digital age. This work, by means of in-depth interviews with authors of illustrations and analysis of visual material, evaluates the state of Czech contemporary media photomontage on the example of magazines Reflex and Týden. These two magazines use photographic illustration on their front pages inn a unique extent. The analysis concentrates on content and character of the photomontages as well as it tries to define the process of their making. Ethical aspects of the topic are taken into account as well. The main ethical point in this area is to differentiate news photography and photographic illustration. The work also describes techniques of production of composite photography.
Changes in Tyden magazine after Frantisek Nachtigalls editor in chief

The bachelor's thesis Changes in Tyden magazine after Frantisek Nachtigall's becoming editor in chief tries to desribe changes in the new weekly Tyden between the beginning od June, 2008, and the end of May, 2010. There were three different editors in chief in this two years long time period. Dalibor Balsinek had been working at the top position till the end of January, 2009. After that he was temporarily replaced by Daniel Malek. At the end of September, 2010, Frantisek Nachtigall became the editor in chief. The thesis focuses on changes that Nachtigall made. He came to Tyden from a tabloid news paper Aha!, therefore some people were worried that Tyden could become more tabloids like. The author of this thesis tries to find out whether their assumptions were right. After the presenting of the Tyden weekly and the three editor in chief figures the thesis brings a description of the changes in each section and subsection. It focuses on the structural and personal changes, variations of the front page and differences in the choice of topics.

The bachelor's thesis "Twenty years of the "Nurse" magazine" deals with the history of Czechoslovak nursing magazines since the early 19th century until the present day. Its attention is focused especially on the "Nurse" magazine, which is (according to Media Project) the most widely read professional health care magazine title at the moment and intended not just for nurses, but also for other non-medical workers in the health care sector. It examines not only the contents and graphic layout of the magazine, but also the personalities of its editors-in-chief and chairwoman of its Editorial Board, and also maps its travels round various publishing houses. There is also a summary of marketing support of the magazine and related projects, as well as a description of its competitors in the Czech magazine market. The thesis presents a qualitative survey, which maps out readers' communities of selected professional periodicals, perception of the quality of contents of various magazines by readers, usability of the information each of them brings in day-to-day health care work, willingness and motivation of health care personnel to publish articles in professional media etc. Its purpose was to determine whether the "Nurse" magazine is indeed a good partner in the lifelong education of non-medical health...
Comparative analysis of cover pages of magazines Respekt and Reflex in the period of 2009-2010 (textual and semiotic comparison)

Bachelor thesis "A comparative analysis of cover pages of magazines Respekt and Reflex in the period of 2009 - 2010 (textual and semiotic comparison)" deals with semiotic analysis of the cover pages of two similar weekly magazines in the same period. Research sample includes five covers of each magazine which shows Czech political figures. The first part of this thesis it describes the theoretical essence of semiotics. The second one is about magazines and theory of cover. In practical part analyses the covers of both magazines with the aim of overall comparison in terms of their communicating intentions, construction of reality and its work with myths and stereotypes. Visual and language codes are studied in terms of denotation, connotation and implied postmodern myths. In the recent media discursus has been interpreting signs and symbols, decoding the hidden meanings and perceptions of the dominant ideology in the construct of reality. Attention is focused on the design of Reflex' photomontage and Respekt's drawing, as well as on composition, colors and using stereotypes. Result of analysis shows a consistent approach of both magazines to the dominant ideology, but a different approach to construct reality and creating the communication plan, which comes just from the way of processing.

Developmwnd of production of fine art magazines in the Czech republic 1990-2005

Research paper entitled 'Artistic journals in the Czech Republic in the period 1990-1999' analyzes artistic journals 'Ateliér', 'Detail', 'Umělec', 'Umění' and 'Výtvarné umění', which were published between 1990 and 1999. The overarching aim of the paper is to provide readers with an overview of the formal and content-thematic characteristics of the given period as represented in the addressed journals. Quantitative content analysis of selected issues of the journals was applied as a research tool. The journals were also researched from the chronological perspective that examined the development of formal signs of each of the journals. The paper compares the basic characteristics and specifics of the journals, as well as the similarities and differences between them. Historical context of the journals with an emphasis on their beginnings, culture and art is provided for the readers. It provides the readers with an insight into the authorship of articles, thematic and content structure, structure of their journalistic departments, structure of publicized contributions and the formal outlook of the journals.
Comparison of popular didactic weekly magazine for youth (Mladý hlasatel thirties/forties Vpřed forties/fifties)

Master's thesis "Comparison of popularly educational weekly youth magazines Mladý Hlasatel and Vpřed in 1930s through 1950s" contrasts two youth titles that were published around the WWII. Both titles, connected not only through the editor and father-like figure Jaroslav Foglar, were immensely popular in their time and constitute the phenomenon of journalism for children of that era. Both magazines were published during uneasy times, firstly during the dawn of the war and during the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia; secondly, after ten years, during the rise of communists' influence and subsequent Communist coup d'état in 1948. This master's thesis follows my bachelor thesis "Mladý Hlasatel and it's authors" describing history, authors and specifics of this magazine. Master's thesis adds comparably detailed information about the magazine Vpřed, but its main objective is to compare the titles published in "free" era before the WWII and after it, and the ones that were published during the limited freedom of the press during the war and after the year 1948. This work seeks not only to compare the content, authors and information in both magazines, but also to comprehend the contemporary context of that era, observe the impact of ideological and political influences, as well as describe different...
