Czech autorship woven tapestry of the 1960s

The beginning of the 1960s was marked in the history of tapestry discipline in European scene by forceful entry of artists-creators realizations, the condition of consequent breaking of this artist-creator tapestry, so-called the new tapestry or the art fabric (in English-speaking countries), to the contemporary artistic life. Preconditions of both of these aspects were lined up by a development of a previous decade, a period when in oposition to stereotypes, conventions and a routine technique of tapestry making in gobelin manufactories and with demands of (on) the ultimate autenticity of artistic communication, opened to begin forming a way of authorship execution, a personal participation of artist in the entire creative process, as a kind of the art weaving incomparable to value of studio's realizations by intensity and mode of artist's message, its artistic language and its sources of inspiration. August Brömse. The artist and his paintings

The work is based on the estate of August Brömse in the Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie Regensburg, which contains over 1050 letters from the period between 1902 and 1910, and a large collection of sketches and pictures. The structure of the work is determined by this material. The first part is focused on the period up to 1910. On the basis of his correspondence it investigates the artist's life after his studies in Berlin up until his establishment as Professor of Graphics at the Academy of Arts in Prague. The text not only provides a biographical study, but also gives an insight into the cultural life of "Czech Germans" in the specific context of the struggles between Czechs and Germans in Bohemia. Of special interest is the "fight" for the two posts for German professors at the Academy, which lasted four years and was very important for Brömse. The second part is devoted to Brömse's paintings from the period after 1910, which have not yet been treated adequately in research on the artist. It ties in with the first part, which shows the starting points of Brömse's painting and also comments on important pictures in the context of the artist's work. In this diploma paper I try to trace back on selected picture material basic themes, motives and subjects of czech art of the turn of 19th century, where the image of woman figure appears. I tried to append particular iconographic themes and motives by sketching out the socio-historical situation and the wider context of the era, when these imageries, as the carriers of the themes and motives, were formed.

Czechoslovakia and the French modern art from 1923 to 1937

Před koncem 19. století byly možnosti české politické reprezentace na mezinárodní scéně minimální. V těchto podmínkách představovaly vztahy s francouzskou reprezentací z pohledu české politické a kulturní elity nejen protiváhu proti německému vlivu, ale také také jistou náhradu za neexistující diplomacii a v mnohém nahrazovaly politickou činnost. Otevření francouzského konzulátu v Praze roku 1897 bylo důležitým momentem českého politického života. Na počátku 20. století zorganizoval Spolek výtvarných umělců Mánes řadu výstav francouzského umění, zejména v letech 1907, 1910 a 1914. České publikum tak mělo první příležitost vidět díla impresionistů, postimpresionistů a kubistů. Z druhé z těchto výstav zakoupil spolek Derainovo monumentální plátno Koupání (1908). Tato tradice byla přerušena první světovou válkou. Pět let po založení nezávislého Československa, byla obnovena. Činem československé vlády, majícím za cíl zlepšení česko-francouzských vztahů, pak vznikla jedinečná sbírka, která je dodnes celosvětově důležitá pro bádání o francouzském umění 19. a počátku 20. století.

Otakar Lebeda (1877-1901)

Otakar Lebeda patřil, vedle Antonína Slavíčka a Františka Kavána, k největším talentům krajinářské školy Julia Mařáka na pražské Akademii. Svůj život se rozhodl ukončit měsíc před čtyřiadvacátými narozeninami. Dílo, které vytvořil v rozmezí pouhých devíti let (a to do něj započítáváme i pět let strávených na Akademii), je svým rozsahem i obsahem impozantní. Jeho jednotlivé etapy můžeme měřit na týdny a dny, podle toho jak se Lebeda pohyboval po krajině doma i v cizině. Přesto se mu podařilo dotknout se všech podstatných problémů soudobého malířství. Dnes se zdá jeho zařazení do vývoje českého umění konce 19. století nezpochybnitelné a jeho práce najdeme v každé publikaci, která se tímto obdobím zabývá. První umělcova monografie vyšla však po více než padesáti letech od jeho úmrtí a na dlouhou dobu se stala jediným zdrojem informací. Možnost podrobně prozkoumat dochovanou Lebedovu pozůstalost a korespondenci mne vedla k rozhodnutí zvolit si dílo Otakara Lebedy jako téma diplomové práce. Mým záměrem je podrobně zmapovat jeho umělecký odkaz, který je možné od posledního zpracování rozšířit o nově objevené obrazy a kresby. Prostřednictvím dopisů se také pokusím přiblížit jeho osobnost.

Karel Šlenger. Soul of the painter-outsider as a guide through his life and work

Karel Slenger za svuj zivot vytvofil malifske dilo citajici neskutecnych nekolika tisicu polozek, a to od del minimalnich rozmeru po velkoplosne monumenty. Podle svedectvi Josefa Hirsala udelal i par soch na tema zeny, takove dlouhe ienske postavyl85. Jednalo se o sadrove zfejme odlitky, v nadzivotni velikosti.Vzhledem k osudu autodidakta musel vYtvarne techniky i pfistupy zvladnout sam. Osvojil si metody a vyraz mnoha umeleckych smeru. Najdeme u nej stopy vedouci k Picassovi, a to jak tYkajici se neoklasicismu, tak i, byf okrajove kubismu. Nelze fici, ze je zcela nedotcen surrealismem, ktery u nej v jeho imaginativni podoM, (coz je charakteristicke prave pro neskolene malife) v par urcitYch momentech take potkavame. Staromistrovstvi potkal jiz v Louvru, vzdyt' prvni zkusenosti a poueeni si pfivazi z Pafize. Nejpatrnejsi je jeho poznamenarn tzv. Pafizskou skolou, jejiz ohlasy provazi celou jednu vy-razovou polohu dila. Charakteristicky je pro nej smutek techto velkych Pafizanu - pfistehovalcu zidovskeho puvodu do Pafize poeatku minuleho stoleti. Na tomto miste vy-znamneji vystupuje puvodem Litevec Chaim Soutine, jehoz portrety a zatisi jsou silne expresivni a zivelne deformovane, a v mnohem tedy blizke Slengrovym. The work discribes decoration of Prague's tenement houses in the last third of the XIX.Century and the beginning of XX.Century. In the first instance it addresses questions of decoration at general level, the character and disposition of decorative elements on houses facades. Concisely it considers the materials and techniques used in the decoration of houses and it discusses usual methods of compositional solutions and disposition of decoration. Hereafter this work summarises in a brief survey the subjects of decoration in the reviewed period. Individual decorative elements may have decorative sense; otherwhile they express semantic or ideological meaning.

Martin Salcman 1896-1979

History of the modern 20th century art resembles a jungle of styles, full of personal or collective expresslons and many errant ways. Big roads of early 20th century -ISMs were planned and marked out by names known today around the world or at least In Europe. These maln streams navigated whole groups of artists and their followers. They were, however, very often interconnected with a complicated network of sidewalks, shortcuts and detours, full of hard working individuals searching for their own complex, but still unique invention. Staying in the shade and trying to understand similarities between the "high art" of their famous companions, they became philosophical bridges between styles as well as tireless engineers dismantling or connecting them. 1artin Salcman was such an individual. He was born In ~896 in a poor family. His father died when he was 10, his mother shortly after he became 14. Still a student of local secondary school he has shown his strong sense for artistic expression and doubtless talent. It may have been recognized by some of his relatives or school authorities. Personalities and development of Czech comics until 1949

Zahraniční komiksy otiskované v českých periodikách jsou jen dalším dokladem skutečnosti, že tato forma vyjadřování nebyla u nás do. roku 1945, chápána jako samozřejmá. O tom svědčí potřeba přetvářet již hotový zakoupený komiks do formy obrázkového seriálu, tzn. opatřovat němý comic strip verši, popřípadě vymazávat u komiksu text v bublinách. Jak už bylo řečeno, největší oblibě se těšily postavičky z dílny Walta Disneye, a to na základě filmových grotesek. Zbytek jednostránkových zahraničních komiksu, které byly v českých časopisech otiskovány, spadá do druhořadé kategorie světové produkce. Daleko častěji byly přejímány novinové comic stripy, jejichž oblibu u čtenářu si vydavatelé ověřili. Na tomto poli se také odehrávaly české "pokusy" o komiks.
