Celda Klouček - personality and work

This work is deling with personality and work of Celda Kloucek, a sculptor and ornamentalist living at the turn of 20th century. Celda Kloucek was born 6th December 1855 in Senomaty near Rakovnlk. Advised by his patron Milller, he decided to accept a position with ornamentalist sculptor Otto Lessing in Berlin, where he got his first professional training. Kloucek turned out to be an excellent sculptor, especially in ornamental construction work. The contracts were diverse and he learned to work with many different materials. In 1879 he enroled in professor Otto Konig special course at Arts and Crafts School in Vienna. After three years, he became a reader at Arts and Crafts School in Frankfurt am Main. In 1888, he opened his atelier at Arts and Crafts School in Prague. He was teaching here for twenty-eight years. Many recognized artists emerged from his atelier, all of them adhering to Kloucek's emphasis on clarity of composition and simplicity of the ornament. The Artist as a Versatile Agent of the Biedermeier Era. Studies on Josef Navrátil

The presented dissertation deals with the painter Josef Navrátil (1798-1865) and his social roles during the Biedermeier period. It does not aim to be a classic monograph evaluating the life and work of the artist, but rather strives to provide a collection of independent (case) studies, which will map and point out Navrátil's role in society and his artistic and professional status. Therefore, special interest is paid to Navrátil's clients, the cultural background of his work, his connections, social engagement, and activities in various associations, but also to specific phenomena of the time, such as the so-called Zimmerreise or pub-based "table companies". However, emphasis is also placed on the Navrátil's exceptionally wide range of professional activities, which was so typical of the Biedermeier epoch. In this respect, Navrátil's official occupation - room painting / decorating, which he applied with his renowned painting workshop in many Prague and non-Prague buildings for a wide circle of clients of various social classes (imperial court, church, burghers, landowners), must not be overlooked either. Portrait silhouette in the Czech lands from the 18th to the 19th century

Portrait silhouettes, which are the subject of the present work, are a peculiar and now forgotten type of portraits. They represent a specific part of the visual culture of the second half of the 18th and 19th centuries and a number of contemporary social, cultural, artistic and scientific phenomena intertwine in them. Technically, these seemingly simple monochrome profile portraits are very diverse. The range of silhouetted persons and persons creating them is equally diverse. The aim of this work is a comprehensive mapping of the phenomenon of portrait silhouettes in the Czech lands with an overlap to more general levels concerning the philosophical aspects of this type of portraiture. The text is based on knowledge gained from detailed research of domestic collections of silhouettes, which are part of museum, gallery and castle collections. A large amount of pictorial material has been preserved in the Czech Republic, which made it possible to formulate the necessary more general conclusions. The complex approach mixes from a methodological point of view the approaches of art history with its formal analysis and cultural history, some topics overlap with the content of Bild- Anthropology studies. Czech Illustrated Magazines of the Second Half of the 19th Century Markéta Dlábková Abstract of the thesis Illustrated magazines are specific phenomenon in the 19th century culture. Between the 1860s and 1890s they published an enormous number of pictorial materials of diverse content and quality. Apart from general social importance they played a significant role in the world of art as well. Today they can serve as a beneficial source of knowledge about situation on Czech as well as European art scene in the period. The so-called penny-magazines of the 1830s can be seen as predecessors of illustrated magazines. They presented a cheap and popular source of knowledge and amusement, together with considerable amount of xylographic illustrations. However, it was the second half of the 19th century that witnessed a real boom of illustrated magazines. At the beginning of the 1840s, the Illustrated London News, the Leipziger Illustrirte Zeitung and L'Illustration established the character of this type of periodicals. In following years there were many other magazines rising throughout entire Europe. In the Czech lands, first examples of the type can be found at the end of the 1850s. School of Applied Art and its studios in the years 1890 - 1910

The theme of this thesis is History of School of Applied Arts studios in Prague between 1885 and 1910. The thesis focuses mainly on style development at the crucial point of turning of the century. This period was the turning point when advanced school's art manifested and also time of generation change that transformed overall school atmosphere. A specific contribution of this thesis lies in outlining less known specialized schools, with inclusion of female element, which are factors that were not previously described elsewhere, as well as in attempt to find methodical and development analogies between Prague and Vienna School of Applied Arts. The aim of my thesis was to assess exceptional status of the school, especially in context of Czech educational system of decorative arts, and to evaluate historical context based on detailed archive research. I included in the thesis a comprehensive list of students of general and specialized schools of decorative arts, thus creating a foundation for future researchers on individual artistic personalities. Study of development of School of Applied Arts is an analytical synthesis presenting the specific role of decorative arts and crafts in pre-WWI era.

PhDr. Jana Kybalová, CSc. 2014 ABSTRACT Highly regarded throughout the world, Bohemian glass is also acknowledged as a cultural phenomenon in its own right and the Harrach glassworks in Nový Svět in Krkonoše indisputably ranks among the most accomplished companies that have had a determining influence on the world renown of Czech glassmaking. First documented in the early 18th century, the glassworks has been in existence for three hundred years. However, its prominent status among Bohemian producers of glass is not only due to its long history. What makes it noteworthy is its traditionally outstanding craftsmanship and technological facilities, and mainly its foresighted efforts to employ and further enhance diverse techniques in working with crystal and coloured glass. Calendar and its visual aspects in Czech countries of the 19th century

This thesis focuses on the art-historical development of wall calendars in the Czech countries in the 19th century, reaching to the 20th century. The thesis compares the wall calendar with the book calendar and also with the poster, i.e. the closest forms of applied graphic arts. It deals with the visual development of wall calendar and also the individual artists, printers and publishers, especially with the Haase printing company in Prague and artists in its service.
