Czechoslovak Foreign Cultural Policy in the Early Years of Normalization
Machala, Jan ; Vojtěchovský, Ondřej (advisor) ; Mervart, Jan (referee)
The master's thesis deals with the approach of the communist regime to the cultural promotion of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic in developed capitalist countries, based on the analysis of selected foreign exhibitions with Czechoslovak participation. The presentation at these exhibitions was an important instrument of Czechoslovak foreign policy, which made it possible to influence the foreign public and political representation in the style of soft power. The master's thesis focuses on the form and application of this foreign-cultural policy during the early phase of the so-called normalization and examines its continuity or discontinuity in relation to the reform period of the 1960s. It focuses on the circumstances of the origin and course of the implementation of the World Exhibition in Montreal, the Man and His World exhibition, the World Exhibition in Osaka and the Czechoslovakia - a Country of Two Cultures exhibition. In addition to the above, it briefly discusses the previous development of world exhibitions. The master's thesis draws to a large extent from primary sources. The image of Ireland and the reflection of the Northern Ireland conflict in Czechoslovakia in the 1970s and 1980s
Vlček, Jiří ; Vojtěchovský, Ondřej (advisor) ; Halama, Vojtěch (referee)
The thesis aims to analyze the perspective on the Northern Irish conflict (The Troubles) presented to its readers by Rudé právo (The Red Right), a periodical publication. The research is based on the premise that Rudé právo expressed the viewpoint of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (KSČ) and thus the KSČ's stance on the Northern Irish conflict. The study examines the preferences of Rudé právo, and by extension, the KSČ, towards the various conflicting factions in Northern Ireland, along with the factors influencing these preferences. The analysis focuses on articles published in Rudé právo that addressed events in Northern Ireland during the investigated period. Of particular importance for the analysis are contributions from correspondents and associates of Rudé právo abroad, as they are the most comprehensive and prominently reflect the authors' opinions. The scope of the study is chronologically delimited to the years 1970 to 1975, thereby concentrating on the most violent phases of the conflict. Keywords: Northern Ireland, Great Britain, Northern Irish conflict, The Troubles, Rudé právo, Communist Party of Ireland, Communist Party of Czechoslovakia.
The evolution of Slovenian communist leaders' attitudes towards Yugoslavia and socialism from 1986 to 1988
Janíčko, Michal ; Vojtěchovský, Ondřej (advisor) ; Sommer, Vítězslav (referee) ; Klabjan, Borut (referee)
The dissertation focuses on the development of the attitudes of the political elite in socialist Slovenia towards key issues of the state framework and the political and economic system in 1986-1988. Using archival sources, the weakening of the Yugoslav orientation and beliefs about the prospects of the socialist self-government system are examined. The Slovenian political elite in the period under study was characterized by a high sensitivity to public opinion in their republic, in which nationalism and criticism of the communist government had been growing since the early 1980s. Some of the assumptions of the existence of the common state began to be abandoned by Slovenian leaders in the summer of 1987, while a year later they begun to move directly away from the federal arrangement of Yugoslavia towards a confederation. On the subject of the economic system, a turning point in the thinking of the Slovenian and overall Yugoslav communist elites occurred in the spring of 1988 under the pressure of the prolonged economic crisis. The dismantling of the pillars of self-management socialism began then. The Slovenian communist leaders, led by Milan Kučan, coped well with this loss, also thanks to the success of nationalism, which in their ranks in the late 1980s grew rapidly, as it did in the general public.
Forced labour in the territory of occupied Norway during The Second World War - living and working conditions of Czechs as part of a total deployment in the areas of construction of Nordland- and Polar Line in 1942-1945
Králová, Gabriela ; Vojtěchovský, Ondřej (advisor) ; Spurný, Matěj (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with the topic of Czech forced workers in Norway during the World War II. It follows the bachelor's thesis, which generally presented this almost unknown chapter of Czech-Norwegian history within the broader context of forced labor within the Norwegian territory. However, the work presented focuses on specific areas of deployment in the background of the Polar Line construction project in the north of the country, which had the highest priority in the Nazi plans. The thesis provides a deeper analysis of the collected sources, especially diaries, and on the basis of this charts the overall working and living conditions of Czech manpower in each construction section. At the same time, the work also takes into account the perspective of other interested parties, including Norwegian residents who have become an important part of Czechs' stay in Norway, as the research reveals. In addition, in this context, life in the camp and outside of it is discussed while the thesis compares the conditions in these two intertwining "worlds". The final part then focuses on the post-war situation and outlines how this experience affected the Czechs and how it is viewed within the framework of research on both Czech and Norwegian side.
Between Belgrade and sovereignty. Kosovo in 1988-1990.
Ceropita, Mihail ; Pelikán, Jan (advisor) ; Vojtěchovský, Ondřej (referee) ; Štěpánek, Václav (referee)
The presented dissertation examines socio-political changes in the autonomous region of Kosovo during the development of the political crisis that engulfed the Yugoslav federation in the second half of the 1980s. In the context of creating prerequisites for a new round of the Kosovo crisis in the second half of the 1990s, the political, social and partially economic aspects of the situation in Kosovo during this period are considered. Looking back, we can say with confidence that a significant number of political processes associated with the emergence of the current partially recognized state of Kosovo took place at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, when in the autonomous province political elites, which were de facto independent in attitude towards the Serbian and Yugoslav leadership, were formed. The interpretation is divided into several chronologically separate parts that describe the changes in the political situation of Kosovo and its relations with the Serbian and Yugoslav leadership. When analyzing the topic, the work draws mainly from secondary literature, contemporary press, memoirs, contemporary publications and documents of a political and social nature. Keywords Serbs; Albanians; Kosovo; Jugoslavia; national movement; Serbia.
