Fear in the Czech linguistic picture of the world

Diplomová práce vychází z teoretických a metodologických základů kognitivní lingvistiky (zejm. teorie jazykového obrazu světa a konceptuální metafory) a přihlíží též k psychologicky orientovaným teoriím emocí. Na základě materiálu jazykových slovníků češtiny (výkladových, synonymických, frazeologických aj.) a zdrojů ČNK vykládá a popisuje metaforické konceptualizace emoce strachu v českém jazyce spojené zejména s jeho zpředmětněním, personifikací, chápáním jako prostoru a jako síly. Práce též ukazuje v hierarchizaci užívané lexikální prostředky spojené s vyjadřováním strachu v českém jazyce (substantiva, slovesa, adjektiva a adverbia) a snaží se co nejkomplexněji postihnout jejich konotační potenciál.

Linguistic picture of wind in Czech

The paper analyses a part of the linguistic picture of the world in Czech by means of methods of cognitive and cultural linguistics. It deals with an analysis of the linguistic picture of wind in contemporary Czech. Individual chapters illustrate how native-born Czech speakers perceive phenomena around themselves, how they think and speak about wind (and air as a related phenomenon). The analysis is divided into two parts. The first part analyses the linguistic picture of wind from the point of view of the system. It examines its lexical definitions, derivatives and its paradigmatic and syntagmatic relationships. The first part deals likewise with etymology of selected words and discusses the designation of wind in Czech dialects and idioms and in old Czech, thereby contributes to a great degree in illuminating the current vocabularies pertaining to wind and related phenomena. The excerptions of historical semantics based on contemporary literary and lexicographic products can also demonstrate the changes and shifts of meaning. The second part examines the linguistic picture of wind in contemporary Czech. It aims, first of all, at the analysis of metaphors adherent to wind. Primarily it observes wind as an aiming field. Woman in Czech linguistic picture of the world

This thesis aims at the analysis of the image of woman in the Czech lingustic picture of the world. A special attention is paid to the issue of lingustic stereotypes connected to women. The theoretical and methodological framework for the analysis is provided by the principles of cognitive lingustics and ethnolingustics. The lingustic material the thesis works with consists of dictionary definitions from the Czech explanatory, etymological and synonimical dictionaries, as well as folk songs, proverbs, phrasems and anecdotes. Stereotypes connected to women are analysed in several different dimensions throughout the text. The thesis deals both with the typical characteristics of women in general and with those ascribed to them in various periods of life (young girl, old woman); those based on family relations (mother, mother-in-law, step-mother) as well as those determined by the relation with men (wife).

Deaf signs

This dissertation addresses a special group of signs in Czech Sign Language - we call them Specific Signs. There are total of 90 of them being introduced and analyzed in this paper. The larger part of the Specific Signs is divided into 17 categories. In each category there are signs similar in meaning and therefore often misused in the context by non-native signers. An 18th category contains signs which have the same manual components but have different oral components. Another 39 signs are analyzed individually, they are not part of any category. Each Specific Sign has a sequence number and there is a photo documentation showing what the sign looks like (the movement, the process of sign and the type of oral component). Furthermore, for each sign there is a written explanation of its manual and non-manual component, an approximation of its general meaning and the most frequent translation. The use of the sign is shown in examples from commonly signed conversations. These examples are translated into written Czech and the sign order, used in the signed sentence, is listed as well.

Girls' language in Czech girls' magazines

This study deals with language and ideology in girls' magazines BravoGIRL!, COSMOgirl!, Dívka (Girl) and Top dívky (Top Girls). It describes the position ofthese three monthlies and one semi-monthly on the Czech media market and then it focuses at the content and specific genres ofthese magazines (namely, photostories). The linguistic analysis ofthe used language and style follows; the expressivity and emotionality of the so called genderlect and especially of the girls' speech (and a speech meant for girls) and the tendenci es towards enriching the lexicon of these magazines with anglicisms, neologisms, occasionalisms and slang are exemplified. It is also explained why intertextuality becomes so rare in the texts. In addition, I offer results of a questionnaire (50 enquirees), which uses both qualitative and quantitative (evaluated by the SPSS software) methods. It reveals how much the girls, potential inforrnants of the media messages, perceive the language of those magazines which is made to be and pretends to be their own sociolect. Aphasic language production: a linguistic analysis

Tato práce je pokusem přiblížit některé zvláštnosti užívání jazyka, které jsou spojeny s komunikací afatiků. Je rozšířenou verzí původní práce Jazyk a zvláštnosti v dorozumívání afatiků, která vyšla v časopise Jazykovědné aktuality (roč. XLI, 2004, Č. 1 a 2). Nově jsou vloženy kapitoly o agramatismu (kap. 4.2) a tzv. náhradních komunikačních strategiích (kap. 5.0). Dále jsou podány transkripty mluvených projevů afatiků (viz Přílohy) a jejich lingvistické rozbory (kap. 7.0-11.0). Práce obsahuje možná spíše otázky než odpovědi; podnětem k ní bylo setkání s afatickou řečí a afatickými mluvčími. Vycházím z odborné literatury, z videozáznamů mluvených projevů afatických pacientů a z osobní zkušenosti s českými afatiky. Zvláštní jevy afatické řeči, které práce představuje, by neměly být chápány jako typické vlastnosti jakékoliv afatické řeči; cílem je vzbudit prostřednictvím rozborů některé (nejen) afaziologické otázky (viz Diskuse, kap. 12.0).

Oppositeness in Czech and it's linguistic picture of the world

Práce se zabývá opozitními významovými relacemi mezi lexikálními jednotkami ve slovní zásobě, jež vyjadřují pojmové opozice v našem myšlení a konceptualizaci skutečnosti. Popisuje opozita z hlediska lexikologie (jako součást jazykového systému) a z hlediska stylistiky (zejm. jejich úlohu ve figurách a kompozici); směřuje k souvislostem mezi poznatky z těchto lingvistických disciplín a tím, jakje opozitní vztah vnímám obecně, jakou má úlohu v orientaci člověka ve světě, resp. jaký má podíl na utváření našeho jazykového obrazu světa. Tato práce vychází především ze zdrojů odborné literatury "tradiční" strukturalistické jazykovědy a prací lingvistiky kognitivně-kulturní. Dělí se v zásadě na dvě části, z nichž první je převážně výkladová, zabývá se definicí opozitnosti, relevantními rysy opozit, jejich klasifikací, aspekty opozitnosti a souvisejícími tématy v rámci lingvistiky. V druhé části popisuje jazykový obraz světa v české lidové slovesnosti prostřednictvím analýzy opozitních vztahů - jak v rovině lexikálně-sémantické, tak v rovině zobrazované skutečnosti.

Visually motivated signs in the Czech sign language

U znakových jazyků, stejně jako v případě jiných přirozených jazyků, lze pozorovat strukturní uspořádání systému jazykových znaků. To znamená, že v něm lze vydělovat rovinu nejmenších jednotek mající význam (tzv. znaků, stojících na úrovni morfémů a slov jazyků mluvených), ty pak dále dělit na jednotky nižší, které samy o sobě význam nemají, ale mohou význam IIvyššíchll celků rozlišit. (Stokoe 1960; Macurová 1994, 1998, 2001). Jako jeden z podstatných rysů přirozených jazyků je uváděn libovolný (arbitrární), společensky daný vztah mezi slovy (u mluvených jazyků) a tím, co slova označují (Černý 1998; Jirák-Nekvapil-Šoltys 1996). Tento vztah se zdá být kvůli vizuálněmotorické povaze národních znakových jazyků v jejich struktuře nepřítomen. Znaky znakových jazyků jsou označovány za ikonické (mezi tím, jak znak vypadá a tím, co označuje, je vztah podobnosti). Tento dojem je pochopitelný. Národní znakové jazyky jsou svou formou existence velmi podobné neverbální komunikaci - komunikaci pomocí mimiky, gest. J sou totiž vytvářeny rovněž souborem prostředků založených na pohybech tváře, rukou a horní části těla. Často jsou připodobňovány k formě umění, kdy se umělci nevyjadřují pomocí slov, nýbrž pohybem a výraznou mimikou - tedy k pantomimě. Folk verbal art in the context of ethnolinguistics and its function in teaching Czech as a second language

Subject of the Diploma is a use of folktexts in Czech courses for foreigners. An education material draft is being submitted, based on communication approach to language teaching, connects language and socialcultural dimension through. Submitted education material is a calendar like that defines four seasons in the Czech Republic through their attributes, i. e. their essential characteristics, in the folktexts included, and supported by the folktexts also explains appropriate rituals, feasts and concepts of the seasons. All texts and information of the education material draft are chosen or adapted with respect to communication needs of the foreign language students and in order to introduce concepts and knowledge of the Czech geography, culture and cultural history.

The picture of life and death in the Czech linguistic picture of the world

Práce zkoumá jazykový obraz smrti a života v češtině na základě etymologie, slovníkových definic a derivátů lexémů smrt, mrtvý, umřít, život, živý a žít, dále na základě frazémů a textů lidových písní a pohádek. Vychází z pojetí metafory jako něčeho, na čem je založen náš konceptuální systém, dále z teorie kategorizace a z chápání antropomorfismu a tělesnosti jako jednoho z hlavních principů jazykového obrazu světa. Metafory smrti a života jsou děleny podle oblasti cílové a zdrojové. Jak se ukázalo, v cílové oblasti jsou oba pojmy pojímány jako konkrétní entity, se kterými lze jako s předměty zacházet a které mají svou prostorovou orientaci. O antropomorfním pojetí pojmu smrt svědčí i konceptualizace smrti jako osoby. Také atributy, které jsou smrti přisuzovány (zejm. vlastnosti hodnotící a vlastnosti vnímatelné smysly), dokládají její pojetí jakožto osoby nebo konkrétního předmětu. Mezi základní představová schémata patří u obou pojmů schéma nádoby (prostoru) a cesty. Život je chápán jako kontinuum ohraničené z jedné strany narozením (vstupem do prostoru života) a ze strany druhé smrtí (odchodem z prostoru života).
