Artists and Photography (Czech Painting and Photography in the 19th and Early 20th Centuries)
Pospíšilová, Romana ; Prahl, Roman (advisor) ; Vlčková, Lucie (referee) ; Mlčoch, Jan (referee)
Artists and Photography (Czech Painting and Photography in the 19th and Early 20th Centuries) - Dissertation abstract - Romana Pospíšilová The topic of this dissertation is the multi-layered relationship between painting and photography in Bohemia in the 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly the role of photography as an inspirational material for artists. The invention of photography in 1839 brought about many changes and stimuli in society at the time. Photography contributed to the development of a number of scientific fields, changed the form of illustrated magazines and news, and democratized access to one's own portrait. It also uncompromisingly spoke to the visual arts of the time. For painters, photographs, whether they were their own or were purchased elsewhere, represented a reservoir of visual stimuli. They facilitated the study of nature. They also brought about new impulses in the form of snapshots, chronophotographs and medical images. In the artist's studio, the photograph replaced the absent model, serving as an 'aide- mémoire'. However, it could also be projected directly onto a screen and mechanically copied. The use of technical images by painters did not fit into the 19th century concept of the artist as a creative genius, which was still very much alive. Art critics of the time,...
Haase Printing and Publishing Company and Fine Arts in the 19th and early 20th Century
Holečková, Kateřina ; Rakušanová, Marie (advisor) ; Vlčková, Lucie (referee) ; Prahl, Roman (referee)
The Prague based Haase printing and publishing company played an important role in the development of polygraphy, typography, significantly contributed to the Czech national revival and during its existence collaborated with many artists in some cases of world importance. This PhD thesis tries to bring knowledge to the applied graphic art in the Czech lands in general, but also describes the most important historical events of the Haase company, especially these with influence on its art production. The PhD thesis examines the process of graphic work creation and tries to place selected works in the context of work of individual authors and the fine art in the Central European area in general. It is also focused on the nationality issue and the role it played in the selection of artists with whom the Haase company collaborated.
Conservation procedure for the protection and treatment of chromolithographic prints on paper refined by coating
Chadimová, Martina ; Vlčková, Lucie ; Franc, Jan ; Vávrová, Petra ; Ruml Fortelná, Irena ; Kubíčková, Markéta
In conservation and restoration practice, the issue of chromolithographic prints on refined paper is a non-trivial area to which systematic attention has not yet been paid. The absence of reference sources and case studies on this subject results from the fact that these objects – artifacts and documents – have not been preserved in great numbers in collecting and memorial institutions, and not much importance has been attributed to them within such collections. The rarity of the preservation of valuable chromolithographs in collecting institutions is complicated by their often problematic condition and the frequent damage resulting from the specifics of the chromolithographic process. Although after continuous improvement it was possible to print on almost anything, the most valuable picture posters were printed almost exclusively on “refined” paper. The “refined” coating on this paper, characteristic of chromolithography, as well as the final, transparent “lacquer” layer, cause many problems in terms of restoration, and many physical and chemical risks arise from the layering and interaction of the materials used. The established conservation and restoration procedures in the common practice of collecting institutions have not yet taken into account these very specific issues. The conservation procedure itself involves both theoretical and practical aspects. The section dealing with theoretical aspects summarizes the knowledge necessary to determine how to design conservation and restoration interventions and what constitutes the proper care of chromolithographic prints on refined paper. The introductory section provides many tools for the identification of such prints, including an historical excursion into printing technology and the production of refined coated paper. Rich pictorial documentation serves as a visual aid for recognizing the basic (most common) types of chromolithographs and for identifying paper types based on the damage incurred. The theoretical aspects deal in more detail with the process of refining paper by coating it, with regard to the chemical composition of the substances used, and provides an overview of such binders and pigments. An overview of the factors influencing the degradation of paper is summarized in a separate text dealing with external degradation factors (humidity, temperature, light) and internal ones (hydrolysis of the glycosidic bond, oxidation and photochemical reactions of cellulose, oxidation and photooxidation of hemicelluloses, photolysis and the photooxidation of lignin). The theoretical starting points for the conservation procedures in practice therefore explain the operation of the methods applied in the procedure. The focus is on the preservation of prints containing acidic materials, i.e., on de-acidification methods, such as in situ de-acidification in vacuum packages, the Papersave Swiss technology, and the MMMK method. The optimal variants of the conservation procedures for chromolithographic prints on refined paper are presented in a practical methodological manual based on theoretical analysis of the issue. The first practical step is the macroscopic and microscopic analysis of the physical condition of the examined print and production of a digital record. The output of that procedure is the identification of the material and a thorough assessment of the recorded types of damage, as well as the stage of degradation. As a useful practical guide, a categorization of types of damage according to the conservation procedure they require has been prepared. The record of these facts is the starting point for each conservation protocol and yields supporting information for the choice of a subsequent conservation procedure. The proposed conservation procedures include pH measurement and the subsequent adjustment, gluing and follow-up care. The procedure concludes with a proposal for optimal storage.

Portrait silhouette in the Czech lands from the 18th to the 19th century
Mikulcová, Anežka ; Prahl, Roman (advisor) ; Vlčková, Lucie (referee) ; Vondráček, Radim (referee)
Portrait silhouettes, which are the subject of the present work, are a peculiar and now forgotten type of portraits. They represent a specific part of the visual culture of the second half of the 18th and 19th centuries and a number of contemporary social, cultural, artistic and scientific phenomena intertwine in them. Technically, these seemingly simple monochrome profile portraits are very diverse. The range of silhouetted persons and persons creating them is equally diverse. The aim of this work is a comprehensive mapping of the phenomenon of portrait silhouettes in the Czech lands with an overlap to more general levels concerning the philosophical aspects of this type of portraiture. The text is based on knowledge gained from detailed research of domestic collections of silhouettes, which are part of museum, gallery and castle collections. A large amount of pictorial material has been preserved in the Czech Republic, which made it possible to formulate the necessary more general conclusions. The complex approach mixes from a methodological point of view the approaches of art history with its formal analysis and cultural history, some topics overlap with the content of Bild- Anthropology studies. The oldest Czech specimens of silhouettes come from the turn of the 70s and 80s of the 19th century, which is...

Socio-pathological phenomena and their prevention at schools
VLČKOVÁ, Lucie
Diploma thesis deals with problems realization of primary prevention of socially pathological phenomena at elementary schools. Presents basic characteristics of the socially pathological phenomena, organisations engaged in the implementation of preventive programs, including recommended methods and procedures. Also proposes a methodology of prevention, the filling of his work. The key part is the custom implementation of the short-prevention program with the use of the materials issued by the Civil association Call hope. Part of the work is also a proposal of variants of the job of the leaves, which is possible in the framework of the implementation of the primary prevention use. In the framework of the master thesis was carried out research whose aim was to obtain the opinion of the on the issue of prevention and the current situation at the primary school from the perspective of the methodology of prevention, to further obtain feedback from pupils who have completed the preventive programs.
