The Characters of Children at the Work of Adalbert Stifter
Petrusová, Kateřina ; Tvrdík, Milan (advisor) ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (referee)
Petrusová, Kateřina (2011): The Characters of Children at the Work of Adalbert Stifter. Prague: Institute of Germanic Studies, Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague. This thesis deals with the role of children at the work of Adalbert Stifter, an Austrian author of the first half of the 19th century, born in Horni Plana (Oberplan) in Southern Bohemia. Adalbert Stifter was not just a writer and a painter but also a pedagogue (he worked as a supervisor of elementary schools for Upper Austria). All these activities, in association with his life experience and personal problems, were reflected in his literary work. I mainly focus on his three works: collections Studies (Studien), Colored Stones (Bunte Steine) and the novel (Bildungsroman) Indian Summer (Der Nachsommer). Childhood already appears in his early work, considered as a period of human development (Menschenwerdung). In Stifter's later stories, for example in his collection Bunte Steine, the characters of children are at the forefront: they are always confronted with the adult world and especially with the powerful laws of nature. This relationship is formulated in the foreword to this collection in the form of Stifter's gentle law (das sanfte Gesetz). The whole concept of the child is completed in the novel Der Nachsommer, where a...

Böhmová, Ellen ; Tvrdík, Milan (advisor) ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (referee)
The representation of the nature in the chosen fairy tales from the collection Phantasus by Ludwig Tieck. This thesis deals with the depiction of nature which played an important role in German literature of the early Romanticism. The analysis is based on three fairytales from Phantasus by Ludwig Tieck, namely, on two »nature tales« Der blonde Eckbert and Der Runenberg and one later tale Die Elfen. The thesis is divided into two main parts. The first one-theoretical, introduces the author of the tales, the background of Phantasus's origin as well as some schools of thoughts and philosophies of the period which deal with various natural phenomena. The second, main part, is focused on concrete interpretation of tales from the point of view of different depictions and functions of nature. The results are analyzed and based on this analysis the main functions and forms of literary depiction of nature are specified.

The topos of modernity and the existentialist discourse in the novels of Wolfgang Koeppen
Frolíková, Marie ; Tvrdík, Milan (advisor) ; Weinberg, Manfred (referee) ; Munzar, Jiří (referee)
The submitted doctoral thesis is an analysis of five novels and one prosaic fragment of the German writer Wolfgang Koeppen (1906-1996). Its first part concentrates on Koeppen`s literary depiction of the phenomena of modernity and of the modern consciousness. In the second part I follow the existential dimension of Koeppen`s novels and I try to put them into the context of the existentialist discourse, which influenced the genesis and the establishment of the so called existentialist literature. Koeppen`s novels share with the texts of existential philosophers and writers the topic of the problems of human existence and of the situation of man in the historic reality of the modern times. This doctoral thesis places Koeppen`s novels, as novels belonging to the literary modernism, into the thematic context of the reflexion of modernity. It is based on the foundation that Koeppen`s novels depict the phenomena of the rationalistic modernity and of the modern consciousness with a critical intention. As follows, it deals with the selected themes of Koeppen`s novels such as the lack of meaning, the loss of utopia and the crisis of the individual in the modern era. In the context of modernity, also the melancholy of Koeppen`s protagonists is being interpreted which has, apart from other things, a connection...
The Search for a Feminine I. New German feminine literature from the seventies to the nineties
Vydrželová, Pavlína ; Tvrdík, Milan (advisor) ; Weinberg, Manfred (referee)
XII. Summary The present work is concerned with the book "shedding'' by verena stefan which gave rise to fiery discussions by critics as wel] as by readers. "[ am my other selť'164 should become the result of the search ťor a feminine I. The leitmotif of the whole book is the self-acceptance of the protagonist which had to be gained step by step, by eliminating the feeling about her own estranged body. At the end of the book the question remains whether this will be converted into a permanent victory. I tried to find out various aspects in Verena Stefan's first book. The focus lay in the analysis of possible acces§es to the new feminine identity. In the first part I concentrated on the formal and contextual aspects, in order to find out and define the characteristics of the new ťeminine literature. stefan's "shedding" launched many other publications which form part of the new German Femininist Literature. "shedding'o by verena stefan made the influence of the women's Movement visibie for the first time. Although "Shedding" is considered a landmark in the history of the new femininist literature, its influence was limited to only one curťent and not to all publications in this íield printed in the following period, as was erroneously said in other scientific documents on literature. A further role played by...
Peter Handke and Wolfgang Bauer as the leading figures of Avant-garde Literature in 1960s Austria
Stejskal, Zdeněk ; Tvrdík, Milan (advisor) ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (referee)
2. Summary Austrian avant-garde literature is nowadays considered an integral part of German literary history. Focusing on the avant-garde's early stage of the 1960s, the thesis seeks to look into (a) the conditions which gave rise to the progressive literature in the Austria of that time, and (b) its concrete manifestations in the works of the young authors. The opening part explains the origins of such a radical approach to form and content across literary genres. After 1945, Austrian culture and arts did not face the uncertain choice of literature in Germany, where another parting of the ways came in 1947, with the fundamentally different approaches between the West and the East. In Austria the initial debate was more efficient: the official policies clearly aimed at re-establishment of the modern and stable values as presented by the Austrian interwar great story-tellers such as Robert Musil and Hermann Broch. These efforts, however, were soon to become counterproductive. The conservative, and cumbersomely obsolete policies of the grand coalition between the social democratic SPÖ party and the newly established ÖVP party failed to provide fertile land for young authors, who grew up in the 1960s. It was these authors in particular who felt that the cultural and political atmosphere was extremely rigid,...

Mephisto: Novel of a Career. The Moralic Responsibility of an Artist. A Comparison between Klaus Mann and Gustaf Gründgens.
Wunderlin, Katja ; Weinberg, Manfred (advisor) ; Tvrdík, Milan (referee)
The work deals with the ambivalent relationship between Klaus Mann and Gustaf Gründgens. Former political and artistic colleagues and friends chose opposite paths during the time of National Socialism. The prior thrust in their relationship allowed Klaus Mann to process the person of Gustaf Gründgens in the time-critical novel Mephisto. On the one hand, Klaus Mann describes the path of a cultivated supporter of the regime, the talented opportunist and characterless careerist while the novel is also Klaus Mann's dealing with his past friend. The aim of my work is to compare the moral positions and development of the two artists during the Nazi-regime. The basis for this comparison is the novel Mephisto. Keywords: Klaus Mann, Gustaf Gründgens, Career, Comparison, Moral Responsibility, Artist, National Socialism, Ambivalent Relationship of Klaus Mann and Gustaf Gründgens

Cermonová, Kateřina ; Vodrážková, Lenka (advisor) ; Tvrdík, Milan (referee)
The study deals with the main cultural and social aspects of German population's lifestyle in Bohemia in the first half of the 20th century. The basis for the research is correspondence written in German which was kept between count Alfons Clary-Aldringen and the noble family Chotek from 1904 to 1943. The correspondence particularly shows the quality of relationship between the correspondents, their social life, family problems as well as the impact of the political events in Bohemia on their lives. Except for the analysis of the correspondence including the language and cultural-historical section, an explanation of the discrepancy between the Germans and the Czechs in Bohemia and introduction of the correspondents and their families is included. German texts by some representatives of national revival in the Czech lands of the 19th century, because of aspects of historical linguistics
Švrčková, Helena ; Vodrážková, Lenka (advisor) ; Tvrdík, Milan (referee)
In the first half of the 19th century, the emancipation efforts of the ethnic groups living under domination of bigger nations grew stronger. Emancipation movements were influenced by the humanistic ideas of Johann Gottfried Herder, proclaiming the language as the most important characteristic feature of a nation and that every nation has the natural right to claim it's identity. Motivated by these concepts, the Czechs identified the enforcement of Czech language with the fight for the nation. This Diploma thesis deals with the textual analysis of the German manuscripts by the Czech revivalists Karel Alois Vinařický, František Palacký and Pavel Josef Šafařík, regarding the state of education in the Czech lands and the comparison between these manuscripts. The textual analysis (Brinker: 2001) reflects the communication field, the purpose of writing the text, circumstances of their creation, the role of the emittent and the recipient and finally the intention of the author, which is related with the indenfitication of the text function. All texts contain elements of the text type "language defense". The consideration of the lexemes with the help of the contemporary dictionaries (Adelung, Grimma, Jungmann), etymological dictionary (Pfeifer) and Duden (2006) focuses on the semantic field of National...
