Nostalgia in the 1930's prose by Joseph Roth

This thesis explores the feeling of nostalgia found in the works by Joseph Roth from the 1930's, namely in two novels (Radetzky March, The Emperor's Tomb) and one novella (The Bust of the Emperor). The main concern of the thesis is the Habsburg nostalgia and the longing for the former Austro-Hungarian Monarchy that the author of these works experienced. The first part describes nostalgia (not only from a psychological but also from a philosophical point of view) and its occurrence in literature, especially in the German-written literature of the period after the First World War. The next chapters deal with the author and the historical context of the period. Joseph Roth's views and opinions were greatly influenced by various historical events and his life experiences, so this section outlines an overview of Austrian history relating to each of the three books, as well as the author's life journey. The second part of the thesis analyses the three above mentioned books from the perspective of the Habsburg nostalgia and the longing for the Austro-Hungarian monarchy through the eyes of the author but also from the perspective of the nostalgia of the individual characters who appear in the books. The Prose of Ludwig Renn: Male Characters in Political Polarization at that Time

The diploma thesis deals with the typology of male characters in Ludwig Renn's prosaic works Vor großen Wandlungen and Krieg ohne Schlacht with regard to the political polarization of the period. To describe the literary characters, it is important to be acquainted with the author's life and the literary-historical context of the period. The journey of Ludwig Renn's life, as well as the time in which he lived, influenced his work. Therefore, the first chapter is dedicated to the writer's life and the second to the literary-historical context of the time in which he published his works. The next part of the thesis focuses on the description of the literary characters in the political polarization of the period. This means that those male characters from both novels that show a political stance are selected and characterized. As the first novel is set during the Nazi rise to power and the second during the Second World War, the characters are left-leaning and anti-fascist or support Nazi ideology and politics. In addition to these two main groups, there are also characters who define themselves against one of the mentioned political orientations, as well as characters who go through various developmental vicissitudes and eventually lean towards one side. Erika Mann: The political cabaret in the context of the then cabaret stages in Germany

This thesis deals with the life and work of Erika Mann and her political cabaret Die Pfeffermühle in the context of the German cabaret scene at that time. The aim of this work is to present Erika Mann's life and the four-year existence of her cabaret, while reflecting on their significance in the present day. The rise of the German cabaret scene at that time is presented through examples of the most significant cabarets such as Die Katakombe, Kabarett der Komiker, or Schall und Rauch. These had a substantial influence on the appearance of Erika Mann's cabaret, which operated as an artistic opposition against National Socialism from 1933 to 1937. A part of this work also includes the interpretation of selected texts from Die Pfeffermühle, providing an authentic insight into the political and societal situation of that time, with themes such as tolerance, justice, or equality that still remain relevant today. Both Erika Mann and the form of political cabaret have something to offer to society even today. This is demonstrated through the presentation of the performance Erika Mann? by the German-Czech cabaret Das Thema, which was introduced in 2021. The tradition and function of German bursenschafts in the 21st century - Frankonia zu Heidelberg

ANGLICKY The aim of this thesis is to introduce the reader to the concept of German student fraternities, specifically the German bursenschafts. In the first part, the focus will be on the history of the bursenschaft and its role in the past, the history of the bursenschaft Frankonia zu Heidelberg is described in more detail. In the second part, the traditions and functioning of the bursenschafts today are described. The third part of the thesis, the practical part, analyses the perspectives of the current active and inactive members of the Heidelberg Bursenschaft Frankonia zu Heidelberg. The thesis tries to compare the differences between the fraternities in the past and the present and to ascertain their role in the life of a student who is or was a member of a student fraternity.

Charles Lewinsky: Gerron (2011). The Swiss Contribution to Holocaust Literature

This master's thesis aims to analyze the biographical novel Gerron and the Nazi propaganda film about "the happy life of Jews in the ghetto," in whose production the protagonist of the said novel participated, and to provide a closer look at the period of the Third Reich and the atrocious Holocaust through the example of the Terezín ghetto, where both the biographical novel and the Nazi propaganda film are set. Charles Lewinsky's biographical novel Gerron from 2011, which was nominated for the Swiss Book Prize, combines a factual and a fictional biography of the famous German actor and director of Jewish descent Kurt Gerron, who was chosen in 1944 as a prisoner in the Terezín ghetto to write the screenplay for and then to direct a Nazi propaganda film depicting "the happy life of Jews in the Terezín ghetto." The Theme of Solidarity in the Novels "The Seventh Cross" (Das siebte Kreuz) by Anna Seghers and "Spark of Life" (Der Funke Leben) by Erich Maria Remarque

The presented thesis deals with the topic of the war and concentration camps in the novels Das siebte Kreuz (in English The seventh Cross) by Anna Seghers and Der Funke Leben (in English Spark of Life) by Erich Maria Remarque with a special focus on the topic of solidarity. At first, the thesis examines the literary-historical context, specifically German literature in the time of fascism and the reflection of Nazi tyranny in German literature. The thesis further examines the lives of both authors and analyses their works in terms of circumstances of their origin, plot, the characteristics of the characters, the individual motives of the novels and the topic of solidarity. The solidarity in the novels is the main theme of this thesis and on the basis of that the two works are compared. Using specific excerpts from both novels, the thesis analyses the theme of solidarity in relation to the individual characters and the time-space of the plot. Prague and Women in Paul Leppin's Novel "Severin's Journey into the Dark"

(in English) This thesis deals with the way female characters are portrayed in Paul Leppin's Novel Severin's Journey into the Dark (Severins Gang in die Finsternis, 1914). After the author and his work are shortly introduced, the female characters of the novel are being analysed. Their qualities and their roles and positions in society as well as their relationship to the main male character are being compared to the period scientific papers (mostly psychological and psychiatric works). These influenced the whole society at the beginning of the 20th century and thereby helped to determinate the trends in literature. A part of the thesis also deals with an anthropomorphised picture of Prague. The analysis of the novel should give an answer to the question how much individuality female characters posses and how much the social and psychological premises of turn of the century influenced them.
