Internalisation of Czech press
Pivoňka, Ondřej ; Jeřábek, Hynek (advisor) ; Tuček, Milan (referee)
This paper is to be considered a contribution to critical media analyses. It is based on the thoughts of Herman and McChesney (1997). It is an effort to apply their thesis about global media systems on the example of Czech newspapers. The core of the paper is comparative content analysis of three major dailies in 1994 and 2004. The analysis verifies the trends that according to Herman and McChesney characterises the development of mass media. Those are concentration and consolidation of capital on the newspaper market, and commercialisation, globalisation, tabloidisation and homogenisation of the contents of the dailies. The analysis has been conducted on the sample of 20 issues of each title in each year. It brought results that partly confirm and partly contradict the theory. The trend of concentration of capital has been observed. The rate of Czech capital on the newspaper market is as low as 15%. The rest is divided among few foreign (mostly two German) companies. The reason of this situation is identified as lack of legislative protection of the newspaper market in the transformation processes in the 90's. The trend of tabloidisation and commercialisation of the contents of the dailies has been proven too. There is no doubt this has negative effects for the public sphere. However, instead of the trends...
Suburbanization of Prague after the year 1989
Mertl, Jakub ; Illner, Michal (advisor) ; Tuček, Milan (referee)
This thesis describes one of the processes that change inner spatial structure of the cities - process of suburbanization - namely taking as an example Prague metropolitan region. While analyzing data of the Czech Bureau of Statistics I look on a development of Prague's residential units and especially focus on the analysis of "population trends" in compact (i.e. core) city and its outskirts. My work verifies that after November 1989, during the transformation of both political and economic realm, suburbanization gained new stimulus and dynamics. The source idea of the second part of the thesis is an assumption that suburbanization may be seen as one of migration flows and as such is not mere reaction to a shift of contextual conditions but is also the result of individual preferences and motivations. This aspect was the subject of qualitative research that examined reasons for moving into Koloděje - one of the suburban zone districts. Specific nature of the suburban migration is reflected particularly in the accent that newcomers put on housing reasons and quality of environment of the area. This thesis ends with outlining some negative consequences of the above mentioned process and factors that could limit its development in the future. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Methodology of internet research
Procházka, David ; Remr, Jiří (advisor) ; Tuček, Milan (referee)
The origin of the Internet dates back to as early as 1969 when several computers were successfully connected without employing any central unit. However, it hadn't seen any substantial development until 1989 when the web pages came. Thanks to a dynamic development, it has reached an almost global expansion since then. The permanently growing number of interested users has gradually involved also social scientists. Originally, the Internet was perceived as interesting in itself, but in the course of time it has become also a methodological tool used in investigations into social issues. This paper deals, first of all, with the Internet as an option to use in data capture. It defines advantages and drawbacks of this tool in terms of social research. Its focus is on the elimination of risks and disadvantages related to this methodology. Further, it specifies some basic rules, which a researcher should follow when designing an internet research and creating a questionnaire. This work addresses principles related mainly to a quantitative research, however, in the last part there are also some possibilities to a qualitative or mixed research suggested.
