Sports swimming in Czechoslovakia 1918-1938
Tomšová, Petra ; Waic, Marek (advisor) ; Kasper, Tomáš (referee)
The dissertation deals with sport swimming in the Czech lands and in Czechoslovakia in the interwar period, specifically in the period of the so-called First Republic. However, the work dates back to the beginning of the 19th century, when the first, especially river, swimming pools began to be established in our territory, which were first used for swimming training of soldiers, and only at the end of the 19th century did the general public learn to swim and there are also the first swimming competitions. The greatest development of sport swimming in our territory occurred only after the First World War, when the Czechoslovak Amateur Swimming Association was founded and it sought maximum organizational, financial and material support for swimming. Our swimmers achieved the best swimming performances in the 1920s, when they were able to compete with the European swimming powers. However, they did not have the world's top swimming, which was also seen at the Olympic Games in 1920, 1924, 1928 and 1936. In the early 1930s, the performance of our swimmers began to stagnate, which could be attributed to the fact that in other countries swimming was supported in all respects, but this was not the case in the Czechoslovak Republic, from the very beginning of sport swimming in our territory. Sternberg's - the aristocratics Society in the "long 19th Century"
Tomsová, Petra ; Županič, Jan (advisor) ; Horčička, Václav (referee)
The main aim of the thesis is to present an analysis of the younger Bohemian branch of Sternberg dynasty. The author follows the life of Zdeněk Sternberg († 1900) in his role of an owner and a successful caretaker of the dominions of Radnice, Český Šternberk and Jemniště. Furthermore, the problematic of aristocratic marriages is reconstructed through studying the fates of his sons Alois († 1907) and Filip († 1924). This theme was supplemented by identifying those values which were of consequence when an adequate partner for a member of aristocracy was sought. The problematic is demonstrated on the situations of both Alois who spent all his life as a bachelor and his younger brother Filip who married and enjoyed a family life. The private world of three Zdeněk's daughters is also reconstructed. The examples of Zdenka Schnönborn († 1915) and Kunhuta Lobkowicz († 1916) offer an insight into their daily dealings within their new families while the youngest sister Karolína († 1930) spent her years unwed and childless. The particular style of aristocratic life is demonstrated on interests and entertainment which the aristocracy fostered (travelling, hunt, horsemanship, artistic interests, sport, games, reading, theatre etc.). The final part of the work focuses on disputes surrounding the issue of...
Theresia of Sternberg - a Life of Noblewoman in the 19th Century
Tomsová, Petra ; Županič, Jan (advisor) ; Čechura, Jaroslav (referee)
The purpose of this bachelor's thesis is to provide a view into the life of Theresia Countess of Sternberg, born Stadion-Thannhausen. This lady is not well-known in public sub- consciousness, only the castle visitors can meet her nowadays inside the castle of Český Šternberk, where her portrait is on display. Even though she is not known for any personal achievements, she offers a view into her personal life which makes it an interesting probe into the lives of 19th century nobility. Theresia of Sternberg was born in 1819 as the third child of Phillip Stadion- Thannhausen and his wife Marie Kunhuta, born Countess of Kesselstatt. She was 26 years old when she married into the old Czech lineage of Stenbergs. She had five children with her husband Zdeněk of Sternberg. Her life was extinguished in 1873. Her own biography further includes the history of the Sternberg clan as well as the sketch of Zdeněk of Sternberg life. The last but not least, the study should offer a view into the aristocracies' family surroundings and into their everyday lives. Keywords: Counts of Sternberg, History, 19. Century
