Czech Constitutional Progressive Party
Tomeš, Josef ; Kvaček, Robert (advisor) ; Galandauer, Jan (referee) ; Kučera, Martin (referee)
The Czech Constitutional Progressive Party (1908-1918) The Czech Constitutional Progressive Party represents in many aspects a unique phenomenon of the Czech politics in the last years before the outbreak of WWI and during the dramatic war period afterwards. Although it did not belong to massive and influential parties, it played a significant role on the political scene at that time with a part of a solitary, represented by many distinctive individualities. It existed for only ten years, six years out of it in standard peace conditions, but in a time of breaking historical events and decisions it made itself be heard in such an important way that it left a remarkable trace in the Czech history of the 20th century. It was created in April 1908 by merging two parties, a Radical Progressive Party and a Constitutional Party (or rather a Radical Constitutional Party) that had been established at the very end of the 19th century following a disintegration and a political differentiation of the progressive movement of the 90's. A scholar in politics
Tomeš, Josef
The paper sums up and evaluates the political activities of the prominent Czech natural scientist Professor Bohumil Němec (1873-1966). It mentions his work in the progressive movement at the end of the 19th century, in the Young Czech Party after 1907 and in the national democratic party in the interwar period, his role in the home resistance during the World War I, his part at the proclamation of the independent Czechoslavak state, in the Chamber of Deputies, Senate and National Czechoslovak Council. It details the background of his candidacy for the President of the Republic in December 1935, when he stood against Edvard Beneš and earned a harsh criticism from the political faction of the "Castle". It observes his confrontation with the political situation after the World War II and the ambivalent attitude of the Communist regime towards his personality. In the end, it reveals his recollections of the presidential election of 1935 written down in the diaries during his last years. It proves that Bohumil Němec was a homo politicus for all his life with clearly defined liberal-nationalist conviction and that his presidential candidacy was a decision of a politically mature and experienced man.
