Kiss of the Death in Czech fine Art 1895-1918

In this bachelor's thesis, I will present theme of a kiss in different perspective other than classic kiss of love, between a man and a woman. I will deal with the kiss as a sign of death. I focus on Czech modern art in the years 1895 - 1918. Kiss, in this unusual meaning, we can find, for example in the form of the so called angel's kiss, signifying the departure of the soul to the other world. We observe this scene in the painting Světice by Josef Mandl from 1905, besides the painting itself, we will explain the symbol of the deadly angel's kiss as such. The second chapter of the work refers to the key topic related to the kiss of death, the subject of Judas kiss. In Christianity, specifically in the New Testament, Judas Iscariot marks Christ with his kiss, thereby condemning him to death. This theme can symbolize not only death but especially betrayal. In Czech modern art, it can be analyzed in the painting of the same name by Jan Konůpek from 1912. I dedicate the last chapter of the work to a frequent symbolic theme, the kiss of death in the form of a kiss by skeleton. This theme, also popular in Edvard Munch's work, resonates in Czech art in the work of Bohumil Kubišta, The Kiss of Death, from 1912.
