Localisation of Version D of "The Poema Morale" based on "The Linguistic Atlas of Early Middle English"
Vaňková, Marie ; Čermák, Jan (advisor) ; Tichý, Ondřej (referee)
The present MA thesis presents an analysis of version D of the Early Middle English verse sermon known as the Poema Morale. The objectives of the study were to verify the present localisation of D in Western Kent and clarify its relations to two more copies of the same text (T and M). The research consistsed in analysing the language of the text it terms of its dialect and distinguishing between different layers of copying, where possible. The analysis was performed using the electronic tool Linguistic Atlas of Early Middle English, specific procedures included mainly analyses of maps showing the distribution of dialectal features found in D, which were complemented by discussions of forms which D shares with other Kentish texts or versions T and M. The aim of these discussions was the identification of words coming from the exemplar. Evidence supporting the localisation of D in Kent as well as forms presumably taken from the archetype were presented and put in the context of the results of previous studies.
English synonyms from the syntagmatic perspective in intrasentential context
Šefčík, Dominik ; Klégr, Aleš (advisor) ; Tichý, Ondřej (referee)
Sense relations, traditionally regarded as primarily paradigmatic, have been shown to carry syntagmatic implications. The present thesis explores intrasentential synonym co-occurrence in order to identify characteristic patterns of such co-occurrence and to explain it with reference to the functions it performs in discourse. The theoretical part provides an overview of both general treatments of synonymy and the studies that deal with co-occurring synonyms. The analysis itself is based on two hundred and thirty sentences retrieved from the British national corpus that contain pairs of co-occurring adjectival synonyms such as confident-sure, faithful-loyal or brave-courageous. The findings suggest that adjectival synonyms co-occurring in the same sentence are typically coordinated (60% of analysed sentences) in order to signal semantic inclusiveness (e.g. a covetous and grasping man). Minor patterns of synonym co-occurrence, which accounted for 2% of the analysed sentences, include the scalar pattern (e.g. smooth, nearly urbane) and the negated pattern (e.g. cruel, not savage). The remaining sentences featured synonyms which did not form distinct patterns and were, accordingly, classified as instances of variation as their co-occurrence is likely to have been influenced by a desire to avoid...
N-grams in the speech of Czech and native speakers of English
Zvěřinová, Simona ; Gráf, Tomáš (advisor) ; Tichý, Ondřej (referee)
The diploma thesis is concerned with the analysis of recurrent word-combinations in the speech of advanced Czech speakers of English and native speakers of English. The data used for the analysis is extracted from two corpora, learner corpus LINDSEI and native speaker corpus LOCNEC. The aim of the thesis is to compare the two groups of speakers, determine differences in their use of recurrent word-combinations and compare the findings to previous studies involving speakers of different languages. The quantitative analysis is performed on a sample of 50 speakers from each corpus and the frequency data is used to compare the two groups as to the number of types of word-combinations they use and how frequently they do so. The qualitative analysis is performed on a sample of 15 speakers from each corpus to determine functional differences. Four categories of word-combinations are determined in the analysis. In the conclusion, the quantitative and qualitative findings are compared to previous research involving speakers of different languages. Keywords: spoken language, learner language, n-grams, n-gram analysis, recurrent word- combinations, lexical bundles, learner corpus
Differences in vowel duration between Scottish English and Standard British English
Kolísková, Barbora ; Šturm, Pavel (advisor) ; Tichý, Ondřej (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the differences in vowel duration between the Received Pronunciation and Standard Scottish English. The theoretical part is concerned with the description of phonological systems of RP and SSE, and with the comparison of these two inventories. The second part of this thesis processes the sound material from six British and six Scottish speakers, and statistically analyzes the obtained data. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Sociophonetic study of substitutional glottalization in native English speakers
Klánová, Aneta ; Skarnitzl, Radek (advisor) ; Tichý, Ondřej (referee)
The glottal stop, previously labelled as a heavily stigmatized feature of British English pronunciation, has become widely spread across all social classes and the majority of British dialects. Young females are believed to be instrumental in leading the spread and causing the social re-evaluation of the feature. The aim of the present study is to analyze the occurrence of T-glottaling in the speech of British English speakers in relation to sociolinguistic factors, primarily age, gender and speaking style. The theoretical part provides a description of the linguistic and social aspects of T-glottaling. Particular attention is paid to the role of social factors in the process of language change. In addition, a brief overview of previous research is presented. The material for the empirical part of this study consists of 32 recordings of British English speakers. The analysis of the results reveals that gender, age and speaking style play a significant role in the frequency of occurrence of the glottal stop. Young females are shown to be the leaders of the spread of T-glottaling, which leads to the assumption that the language change is still in progress.
Corpus based description of processes of lexical semantic change in the Early Modern English period
Hladíková, Lenka ; Tichý, Ondřej (advisor) ; Klégr, Aleš (referee)
This thesis deals with the processes of lexical semantic change in the Early Modern English period. The theoretical part summarises previous research in the area of lexical semantic change including the basic taxonomies from secondary literature and outlines the linguistic situation in Early Modern English. The aim of the practical part of the thesis is to analyse qualitatively the processes of semantic change in 5 selected words on the basis of examples extracted from the corpora (CED, PCEEC, PPCEME, PPCME2 and EEBO), i.e. to describe circumstances of the changes and factors influencing the individual instances of change. The results of the qualitative analysis are confronted with the theories of semantic change discussed in the first part of the thesis.
Notice of termination of employment in selected EU member states
Tichý, Ondřej ; Bělina, Miroslav (advisor) ; Morávek, Jakub (referee)
Notice of termination of employment in selected EU member states The diploma thesis analyses the legal regulation of notice of termination from employer's side in the Czech Republic and its comparison with Austrian and German legal regulation of the same institute. Thanks to the comparison it will be possible to reach the aim of the thesis which is to find out how social is the Czech attitude regarding this topic and to discover all the possible differences and similarities among all the three legal regulations. The first chapter serves as an introduction to the particular national labour legal provisions including the development and describes the main sources of law concerning the labour law. The pivotal chapter concentrates on individual reasons for dismissal under section 52 of the Czech Labour Code to which the thesis searches for the same or similar legal regulation within the other two legal systems. This chapter is divided into the subchapters as every of them focuses on one group of reasons for dismissal. At the end of each subchapter examples from Austria and Germany are given which prove differences and similarities among the three legal systems. This logic of subchapter arrangement enables easier understanding of individual reasons for dismissal and their examples in all the three...
The voicing contrast in Vietnamese English
Tranová, Lenka ; Skarnitzl, Radek (advisor) ; Tichý, Ondřej (referee)
This thesis deals with the voicing contrast in Vietnamese-accented English. The theoretical part introduces the generally accepted phenomenon of voicing contrast and several theories aimed at generalization of the main tendencies in second language acquisition. The final part of the theoretical background addresses initial consonants in Vietnamese and Vietnamese English. The methodological section provides information about the informants, the recording, and data processing prior to the analysis itself. I also present graphs and tables illustrating the statistical calculations - using ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc tests - that identify the relations among the measured units. The results of this analysis show that in its initial stressed plosives, Vietnamese-accented English maintains a voicing contrast similar to that of a native English accent. The average Voice Onset Time values of lenis stops without prevoicing are slightly higher than those produced by American English (AmE) speakers, while the average values of voiced initial stops prove to be fairly close to their AmE equivalents. This affinity is attributed to the fact that prevoicing in Vietnamese exhibits strikingly similar values to AmE. The values for fortis initial plosives are shown to be higher in VE than AmE, due to the fact that in...
English counterparts of Czech diminutive nouns
Salovaara, Marie ; Malá, Markéta (advisor) ; Tichý, Ondřej (referee)
The present thesis studies English translation counterparts of Czech diminutives with a base noun form. Czech, in which diminutives are known to occur abundantly, serves as an auxiliary language in this work. The aim is to analyse English counterparts, classify them according to the non/presence of the diminutive marker as well as to outline the means of expressing diminutive meaning in English (affixes, adjectives). The thesis consists of two main parts: the theoretical background clarifies the specific features typical of diminutives and diminutive formation in both languages. The empirical part describes material and methods used in the research and analyses examples from fiction texts obtained from the parallel corpus InterCorp, which is available through the Czech National Corpus website. The corpus queries involved Czech first-grade suffixes -ek, -ík, -ka, -ko, and second-grade suffixes -eček, -íček, -ička/-ečka, -ečko/-íčko. In the case of English, the suffixes identified by Quirk et. al. (1985) were used: -ie, -ette, -ling, -let. The analysis consists of four studies, each examining English diminutive expressions from a different angle. The findings acquired in the study are subsequently summarized in the conclusion.
English translation equivalents of "snad" and "možná"
Hýl, Radoslav ; Brůhová, Gabriela (advisor) ; Tichý, Ondřej (referee)
The thesis explores the Czech adverbs snad and možná and their English translation counterparts in order to arrive at a set of possible translation counterparts-a translation paradigm-and to look closely into their realizations, syntactic roles, meaning and distribution frequencies. The analysis progresses from classifying correspondences into types and uncovering linguistic data, to attempting to identify the logic behind translators' choices. The most numerous group of counterparts is single-word adverbs, such as perhaps and maybe. Various other counterperts are attested: modal auxiliaries, adverb phrases, prepositional phrases, noun phrases, finite comment clauses, question tags, and different units of discourse. A number of zero correspondences signal occasional bleached meaning of snad and možná in Czech. The analysis is based on 100 examples gathered from the parallel corpus InterCorp, which is part of the Czech National Corpus project.
