Concept of Paleontology Teaching at Primary Schools

This diploma thesis is focused on the teaching of paleontology and historical geology at the 2nd level of primary school within the educational subject of natural history. The theoretical part summarizes a problematic of paleontology in the Czech Republic, including its historical development, and presents the system of curricular documents of the Czech Republic primarily the Framework Education Program for Elementary Education. The main aim of the thesis is to compile five thematic teaching blocks from historical geology, which can be used in the teaching of natural history at the primary school and in the corresponding levels of multi-year grammar schools. The practical part described the teaching blocks including their methodology and three research surveys thematically aimed to identification of students' interest in paleontology within the blocks, students' ideas about an appearance of the dinosaurs, and their evaluation of dinosaur images from various popular books, feature films and toys. The interest of students in the teaching blocks was evaluated using a questionnaire survey (113 participates). Statistical Literacy of Students of Teaching Biology in the Czech Republic

Especially in connection with the results of the PISA research, the literacy in the natural science field has been lately becoming the topic of scientific discussion. It had become apparent that Czech students attain lower levels of procedural knowledge and face difficulties in evaluation and planning of natural scientific research, when compared to student of other countries. In order to be able to make use of the synergy effect between the natural science literacy and statistical literacy, it is crucial for the students themselves to be literate in statistics. The presented doctoral dissertation focuses on the importance and the matter of statistical literacy among natural science and biology students of pedagogy. The goal of this dissertation is to describe the current state of statistical literacy among students of pedagogy in natural science field. Laboratory Work on Plant Physiology and Anatomy and its Use at Primary School

The presented master thesis is focused on practical teaching of the plant anatomy, morphology ad physiology at primary schools in the Czech Republic. The theoretical part contains a summary of the basic knowledge about plant morphology anatomy and physiology including integration of the practical teaching of natural science in Framework Education Programme and its extension into the School Education Programme. This part includes also detail theoretical background of teaching methods, which are suitable for laboratory work and didactic games. The second, practical part contains a detail description of the seven author's laboratory works and seven didactic games dealing with different topics from the plant anatomy, morphology and physiology, their practical evaluation on pupils of two primary schools and one secondary school including following detailed analysis of the realized questionnaire of these didactic materials. According to the obtained research data, it is obvious that the using of practical teaching form is more attractive for the pupils than conventional teaching methods at primary school.
Analysis of Secondary School Pupils' Knowledge and the Interpretation of Evolutionary Biology by Teachers in the Czech Republic, England and Scotland

An evolution is considered the single greatest unifying theory in biology. Therefore, evolution is a crucial topic from the perspective of didactics of biology because it reaches contemporary paradigm of science education. These doctoral thesis deals with the educative aspects in the field of evolutionary biology. Given the fact that educational content and understanding of causal patterns in science may be influenced by the sociocultural background, the whole research is carried out in comparison with Great Britain. The main aim of the thesis is carried out three successive analyzes. First, the occurrence and the content of definitions of evolutionary terms in Czech and British science or biology textbooks have been compared (16 Czech and 16 British textbooks). Data were evaluated using content analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis. Subsequently, a comparison of teaching evolution has been made using a questionnaire survey (350 Czech and 122 British teachers) and interviews (10 Czech and 7 British teachers). Finally, a comparison of the Czech and British pupils' knowledge and opinions on specific evolutionary topics were obtained via a questionnaire (964 Czech and 97 British pupils). Analysis of the Use of Multimedia in Science Education

Digital literacy is one of key competencies for lifelong learning. Although implementing multimedia (i.e. ICT) into the educational process has a global perspective, the curricular documents for compulsory school attendance in the Czech Republic (Rámcový vzdělávací program), Slovak Republic (Štátny vzdelávací program) and Germany (Bildungsstandards) do not emphasize this need. A review of the above mentioned documents indicated, that the general need to develop digital literacy of pupils across all school subjects is not formulated by these documents. Therefore, the personal opinions and beliefs of the teachers, their enthusiasm to use ICT, their level of computer literacy, school facilities and the approach of pupils to ICT, play the most important role with regard to the implementation of multimedia in the educational process. Accordingly, the combined research conducted by questionnaires and structured interviews, is aimed towards beliefs, opinions and experiences of pre-service and in-service teachers of biology and primary school pupils from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Germany. Plant Alkaloids - Integration in the Curriculum of Thematic Area "Plant Biology" for Grammar School

The presented master thesis is focused on an integration of plant alkaloids' curriculum into education process at eight-year grammar schools or their equivalent at primary and secondary schools. The aims of the thesis are to provide a basic data about plant alkaloids, to specify an integration of the plant alkaloids into the curricular documents and to select specific and suitable methods for teaching of the alkaloid topic at schools. These teaching methods were practically verified at the Karel Čapek's Grammar School at Dobříš by using author's proposals of the school lesson, the project teaching and laboratory exercises. In the terms of benefits for students, it has been verified that the teaching of plant alkaloids using the teaching project and the laboratory exercises, can be performed more efficiently than those during an "ordinary" school lesson.
