Holeček, Martin ; Suk, Pavel (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
The aim of diploma thesis The Image of Czechoslovak War Pilots in Rudé Právo between 1945-1950 and in the Selected Years of 1960s is to present the media image of this social group in the view of Rudé právo newspaper. Considering the topic chosen, the author concentrated on the post-war years between 1945-1947, 1948-1950 and the selected years of 1960s (1963, 1965 and 1968). This paper is based on complementation method which combines media history and theory, historical context and complex content analysis of Rudé právo articles in the given years. For content analysis, the author of the paper used a method of text coding depending on the topics suitable for sufficient presentation of the image of Czechoslovak war pilots as well as of the topics and events that contributed to that image. The primary source of this thesis was Rudé právo newspaper which also supplied material for content analysis. Secondary sources contain professional literature concerning media history and air or war environment. The author also uses internet sources and some of them are even archived by the National Library of the Czech Republic because of their content.
Reflections on the parliamentary elections in 1946 in the contemporary printed media
Vašek, Petr ; Cebe, Jan (advisor) ; Suk, Pavel (referee)
Master thesis "Reflections on the parliamentary elections in 1946 in the contemporary printed media" analysis the way six most influential newspapers of the time reported on those important elections. The relevant dailies are Rude pravo, Svobodne slovo, Pravo lidu and Lidova demokracie and two formally non-partisan papers Prace and Mlada fronta. This thesis explores the instruments of political propaganda four party dailies frequently used and how they described the political actions of political rivals. At the end of the thesis these four party-affiliated newspapers are compared mutually. We also deals with the issue whether the two formally non-partisan dailies Prace and Mlada fronta sided with the any individual political party. All six newspapers are studied during the tree weeks before the elections and another three weeks after the elections. This master thesis also stresses the importance of the description of the contemporary society, political and media context and uncovers also a number of facts that can complement the general historical knowledge about the given time. The study of the selected dailies for instance clearly shows that non-communist dailies (especially Svobodne slovo and Lidova demokracie) warned, as early as before the elections, against the posssibility of the communist...
Comparison of media agendas of the assassinations of Reinhard Heydrich and Adolf Hitler
Pavlis, Daniel ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor) ; Suk, Pavel (referee)
The diploma thesis "Comparison of media agendas of the assassinations of Reinhard Heydrich and Adolf Hitler" deals with research and description of entirely concrete press instructions application on a real content of legal Czech protectoral press. This process is the main object of research of two concretely defined eras (May, June 1942 and July, August 1944) and two particular media agendas (assassination of Reinhard Heydrich and Adolf Hitler). Based on a comparison between the press instructions and real media content, the diploma thesis describes mechanisms of press regulation and control of protectoral media on an example of daily newspapers "Národní politika". One part of the diploma thesis is this practical research which results from rich archive material of the National archive of the Czech Republic and from period press. The second part is a theoretical-historic context offering a brief overview of historic events which are important for the following research, and the theoretic minimum from the sphere of press regulation in totalitarian environment and in Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia as well. An integral part of the diploma thesis is also a very various and comprehensive appendix which creates another sheaf of this diploma thesis.

Pavlis, Daniel ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor) ; Suk, Pavel (referee)
My rigorous thesis describes the system of press regulation in Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia by means of two-level comparison. The first one is a comparison of official orders and directives with real content of legal Czech protectoral press (it means "Národní politika" for this research) during two important eras: after the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich and Adolf Hitler. The second one is a comparison of these two media agendas and their synthesis. I wanted to demonstrate the process of press regulation through concrete agendas that are similar in many points: both events are the same (assassinations); both men were the highest men in nazi hierarchy (Hitler was number one in the Third Reich, Heydrich was number three); media were supposed to make some reaction in the direct of recipients because of the propaganda power. But there were some differences as well: the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich causes his death and it was made by Czech emigrants; Adolf Hitler survived almost unhurt and the following revolt and plot (part of the operation Valkyrie) was planned by German high officers in Germany. One of the results of this rigorous thesis is the statement that it was important for Czech press institutions if the event is a part of protectoral life and environment or if it takes place elsewhere...

Party press and cultural policy: district of Pardubice during the normalization
Trestrová, Veronika ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor) ; Suk, Pavel (referee)
This thesis gives a comprehensive picture of the press organs of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in the district of Pardubice during the so-called normalization. The first chapter describes the historical contexts of this era, particularly changes in policy after the onset of Gustáv Husák at the head of the Communist Party in April 1969. With this change is related to another topic: extensive purges in the Communist Party, which took place in 1970. The second chapter focuses on changes in the media at the beginning of normalization, in particular the abolition of some periodicals and restoring censorship, and changes in the cultural field, especially strengthening the focus on the Soviet Union, the emergence of new artists' unions and various legal regulation in order to strengthen ideological supervision of the this sphere . The third and fourth sections are devoted East Bohemian press: daily newspaper Pochodeň, published in Hradec Králové, and Pardubice district newspaper Zář. It briefly describes the history of these newspapers and their effect during the Prague Spring and subsequent developments in normalization. Attention is then focussed mainly on their cultural sections and their scope, content and authors of articles. Analysis of the articles from the cultural sections provides an overview of...

The final thesis entitled Práce mladých, list svazu mládeže z let 1946 až 1963 (Youth Work magazine, the paper of Youth Association in the years 1946 to 1963) records the course of existence of a magazine called Práce mladých (Youth Work) published by the central committee of Svaz české mládeže (Czech Youth Association), later to become a federal organization called Československý svaz mládeže (Czechoslovak Youth Association). The paper served as a bulletin for the numerous officials of over twenty thousand prime groups of the organization. The thesis examines the history of the youth association as well as the circumstances of the paper's conception. It tracks the paper's countless changes in course within its 18- year long existence, and states reasons of its end. The financial and political background of the magazine is thoroughly analysed, especially in relation to the role it played in communist propaganda. The thesis also addresses the graphic aspect of the magazine, the art of its covers, page layout, content structure and its supplements, as well as its editorial staff and board. The youth paper is described in the context of major historical and political events, which had significantly affected the course of action Czechoslovakia engaged in after the second world war and in the upcoming...
Nástup červenobílých a Vlajka in the period from 1939 to 1940
Otcovská, Karolina ; Cebe, Jan (advisor) ; Suk, Pavel (referee)
This diploma thesis focuses on two periodicals that were published simultaneously during 1939-1940, i.e. in the initial period of the so-called Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. Both periodicals presented themselves as press platforms of the sympathizers of fascist groups. One of the periodicals related to the pre-war fascist group Červenobílí and the other referred to a fascist movement called Vlajka. Despite seemingly similar orientations, the magazines got themselves into a dispute that resulted in an extensive press campaign. The aim of my thesis is the detailed analysis of this campaign. Most of the people concentrated around Nástup Červenobílých magazine were active in the committee of Národní souručenství (the only legal Czech political organization of that time), or in its satellite institutions. Nástup Červenobílých thus acted loyally towards Národní souručenství and was financed by its leading officials. Vlajka magazine, on the contrary, was against Národní souručenství from the beginning, which was reflected in the attacks on Nástup Červenobílých. The press campaign was led on the level of personal insults and the main protagonists were Zdeněk Zástěra, publisher of Nástup Červenobílých, and Jan Rys with Josef Burda on the other side, both Vlajka officials. Both magazines used various...
