Beauty as a path towards God and world in the work of Simone Weil
Staňková, Klára ; Roreitner, Robert (advisor) ; Jirsa, Jakub (referee)
This thesis deals with the concept of beauty in the philosophy of the French author Simone Weil. Beauty is described in the context of other concepts of Weil's philosophy, namely imagination and void, decreation and attention. These concepts are confronted with Immanuel Kant's aesthetics, which Weil both draws on and, in many ways, transcends. The thesis seeks to show beauty in Weil's philosophy as a mediator between God and the world and as one form of implicit love for God. Necessity is an important concept for describing beauty, through which Weil also points to the painful aspect of beauty. Weil's understanding of beauty is illustrated in the work by her metaphor of the labyrinth, in which beauty acts both as a trap and as a result of passing through the labyrinth. The work also explores the concrete manifestations of beauty in the world through which beauty can be loved. These, according to Weil, are primarily art, science, and nature.
The Problematics of Race in Selected Writings of Toni Morrison
Staňková, Klára ; Veselá, Pavla (advisor) ; Roraback, Erik Sherman (referee)
The objective of this thesis is to examine the major writings of Toni Morrison which addressed the issues of race and the outcomes of racial discrimination such as for instance dehumanization through slavery or destruction of identity. The works chosen are mostly Toni Morrison's later novels such as Paradise, A Mercy and God Help the Child. Other crucial writings by Morrison concerned with the problematics of race are discussed as well. The analysis focuses on her oeuvre exploring black identity and experience (particularly the experience of African American women) in the United States as well as on the views on race and racial prejudices. In the introduction, the construction of race and racism is discussed in the context of American history. The analysis of the most pivotal historical moments, such as the enactment of the hereditary slavery law of 1662 in Virginia or the civil rights movement in the 1960s, reveals various issues stemming from the institutionalised racial discrimination such as disenfranchisement, anti-miscegenation laws or racial segregation. The subsequent subchapters encompass the definition of race, highlighting a scientific discovery by Stephen Oppenheimer, which proves that all humans have one common birthplace in Africa. This research demonstrates that race is not a...
Migration of elderly people for care
Staňková, Klára ; Dragomirecká, Eva (advisor) ; Vojtíšek, Petr (referee)
Demographic ageing and the shortage of social care workers in European countries are just some of the reasons that lead elderly people to migrate to foreign countries for care. In the theoretical part is this bachelor thesis concerned with the topic of care for the elderly and its problems from a broader perspective and focuses on the situation in Czech Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany. The thesis goes on by defining the term migrant, migration and by introducing the main migration theories. Afterwards explores the thesis migration of caregivers and the phenomenon of international retirement migration. This phenomenon is divided into more kinds, but the main focus lies on the migration of elderly people for care. At the end of the theoretical part introduces the thesis fundamental human needs in old age. These findings are followed by the empirical part of the thesis, which explores, by using the qualitative method, the experience of German elderly people in old age care facilities in the Czech Republic.

Relationship between physical activities and memory in older adults
Tůmová, Tereza ; Šteffl, Michal (advisor) ; Staňková, Klára (referee)
Title: Relationship between physical activities and memory in older adults Objectives: Estimating the effect of physical activity on memory in seniors older than 60 years. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. The data for the elaboration of the diploma thesis were obtained from the pan-European project Survey of Health Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). In this study, all probands were divided according to gender and further into three groups according to their level of education using the International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED - 97). In the data analysis, means and standard deviations were calculated for continuous variables and percentages were calculated for categorical variables. Non-parametric statistical methods were used to test the hypotheses. For more than three categories, the Kruskal-Wallis test was used, followed by post-hoc analysis. The Mann-Whitney U test with Bonferoni correction was used for post-hoc analysis. Testing of memory functions was performed using a ten-word memorization test with immediate and delayed recall. Results: Data from of 47,169 probands older than 60 years were used in the study. A total of 26,034 women and 21,135 men participated. The investigation demonstrated a positive effect of physical and sports activities on the memory...
The effect of smoking, alcohol consumption and physical activity on the risk of dementia
Moulisová, Karolína ; Šteffl, Michal (advisor) ; Staňková, Klára (referee)
Title: The effect of smoking, alcohol consumption and physical activity on the risk of dementia Objectives: The main aim was to estimate influence of selected factors on the development of dementia. Methods: Bachelor thesis is designed as a cross-sectional study. Data for analysis was obtained from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). Results: Data from 6,339 females and 7,226 males older than 60 years was analyzed. Smoking and problem with alcohol drinking were the most dangerous factors for development of dementia. Physical activities without regard of intensity may serve as a protective factor against dementia. Keywords: dementia, Alzheimer's disease, dementia risk factors, SHARE
Study of lipid membranes with ceramide precursors as models of atopic dermatitis
Staňková, Klára ; Vávrová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Zbytovská, Jarmila (referee)
Charles University in Prague, Faculty of pharmacy in Hradec Králové Department of inorganic and organic chemistry Candidate: Klára Staňková Supervisor: doc. PharmDr. Kateřina Vávrová, Ph.D. Title of diploma thesis: Study of lipids membranes containing ceramide precursors as models of atopic dermatitis Ceramides (Cer) are important determinants for both water-retention function and permeability-barrier function in the stratum corneum (SC). They are synthesized from their precursors, i.e. sphingomyelin (SM) and glycosylceramide (GC) by the enzymes sphingomyelinase (SMase) and glucocerebrosidase (GCase). Their reduced levels have been found in the skin diseases e.g. in atopic dermatitis, and are also a causative factor for the dry and barrier-disrupted skin. The aim of this study was to prepare model skin lipid membranes simulating the defect of SMase and GCase and study their permeability. Models of SC lipid membranes were prepared as an equimolar mixture of Cer or their precursors (either SM or GC) in different ratios, cholesterol, fatty acid mixture and 5 % of cholesterol sulfate. The permeability of these model membranes was evaluated using permeation of theophylline and indometacin, transepidermal water loss and electrical impedance in Franz diffusion cells. The amount of model drug permeated...
