PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND THEATRE

This master thesis deals with project management issues in the cultural area, more specific in one of the most delicate cultural areas, the theatre. Starting from the definition of project management and the need for this process in the cultural sector, the author explains how project management can be used in theatre and where the critical points are in the implementation. By means of the analysis of the use of project management in three interesting and renowned selected theatres the text formulates advices for project management implementation. The conclusion of this thesis is based on the author?s practical experience in Prague as well as in Edinburgh (short-term attachment in Scotland) and the experiences of domestic and foreign specialists and professional authors. In spite of the certain dept from the past and the lack of experience in project managing of Czech theatre managers, author affirm with Scottish and domestic theatre professional producers the importance of project management for Czech theatre. The author emphasizes need for project management and methods as essential for future Czech theatre development. This thesis notes also that Czech theatre professionals would be able to deal with project management and get skilled in this area without considerable problems. Czech theatre keeps up with the world top theatres in both artistic and management area. Foreign stimulation and experience from Western Europe and United States of America are converted by Czech theatre very promptly and flexibly. At the same time the author of this thesis would like to warn that project management could not be taken as universal solution as it does not have to necessarily productive results.
