The quality of communication in families using television as a background
SKÁLOVÁ, Markéta
Thesis is focused on communication in families that use television as a background to everyday life. The theoretical part deals with the definition of family and with constitution of the family system, as well as communication within the family and the perception and use of television in the family. The main research questions are: What is the reality in verbal communication of families that use TV as a background? How perceive their communication reality members of the families included in the study sample? There are four families in different stages of the development cycle in the study sample. Data were collected through semi-structured interview and observation. Outputs are analyzed with emphasis on capturing recurring themes so as to be able to identify and describe the general topics. They are summarized in the form of multiple case studies of social groups (families) focused on aspects of family communication and the use of television as a background. The aim of the study was to understand the perception of communication among members of families in which television is used as a backdrop and to recognize their communication habits - this goal has been fulfilled partially. It has been shown that television turned on in the background interferes with communication. Motivation of particular members of family to use television as a background and attitudes towards TV may be different. Television is the most commonly perceived as a way to escape from the silence, or as protection against the feeling of loneliness.
Medial Image of Seniors
SKÁLOVÁ, Markéta
The aim of the thesis is the most faithful interpretation of a senior´s image presented by media taking into consideration possible culture, political, social, alternatively other contexts jointly forming and affecting this image. During the data collection and their evaluation following research questions were taken into account: Do media information concerning seniors come under a typification and/or stereo-typification? Do the media correctly use terms "a senior" or "a pensioner"? Is it possible to discover an age-related discrimination in the media? To achieve this objective there was used a methodical support in a form of a content analysis of the most popular Czech dailies (Blesk, MF Dnes, Právo, Aha!) in the period from January 1st, 2010 to June 30th, 2012. The content analysis was followed by an interpretative part of the research based on the Glaser-Strauss´ grounded theory method. It was followed by a comparison and evaluation of the above stated methods using a categorization and a description of each of those categories arising from the research results.
