Life After the Bin: Used clothing between gift, commodity, raw material and waste
Sedláčková, Markéta ; Abu Ghosh, Yasar (advisor) ; Zandlová, Markéta (referee)
This thesis explores different lives of used clothing donated into charity clothing bins. Multi-sited ethnographic research makes visible the diverse lives of the collected material that vary substantially depending on the type of organization and the scale of their work, ranging from small non-profit organizations to large-scale recycling companies. The key practice is sorting which separates heterogeneous materiality into specific categories and transforms discards into gifts, commodities, materials for recycling or waste. However, these categories are far from being fixed or clear-cut, rather the value of the collected postconsumer material is continually being negotiated and is shifting dependent on the context. Key words: second hand clothing, waste, materiality, bin, recycling, value, sorting, gift, commodity
Mass media portrayal of Czech courts
Forejtová, Natálie ; Homolová, Pavla (advisor) ; Sedláčková, Markéta (referee)
This thesis focuses on the mass media portrayal of Czech courts in the context of the possible influence on the court's legitimacy and confidence. The research of portrayal is based on the analysis of Fagan's dimensions of legitimacy (effectiveness, distributive justice and procedural justice), court rulings and the overall view. The representation of sources of legitimacy rather corresponds to materialistic society - the most represented dimension in 2014 was the effectiveness, on the other hand, distributive justice was represented the least. Normative factors, namely procedural fairness, however, were not covered much. The portrayal in 2014 was, in terms of judicial rulings and the overall view, rather neutral but the sources of legitimacy were mostly negative. Differences were mainly found among mass media portrayal of the lower courts and higher courts and the differences correspond to different confidence in these institutions. I also studied the development since 1997, but besides the increasing interest of mass media in the courts, I have not found any other significant differences which could cause the rise of confidence in the courts. Mass media can also cause the difference in confidence in the courts of the left-wing and right-wing oriented people, because the journal Pravo has a slight...
English translation counterparts of Czech relative clauses
Sedláčková, Markéta ; Šaldová, Pavlína (advisor) ; Dušková, Libuše (referee)
The thesis studies authentic English translation counterparts of the Czech relative clauses with the relative in nominative with the objective to describe realization forms of this modifier, which uses nonfinite clauses on a larger scale. In addition, English signals restrictive function of the modifiers with a comma, Czech does not do so. The theoretical part deals separately with English and Czech syntactic relations, modification, and related topics. It sums up main differences and similarities perceived as the consequence of the differences between analytical-nominal character of English, and flective-verbal character of Czech. The study proceeds from general to more detailed, i. e. from the syntactic relations to the non-obligatory process of the modification of the noun. Next, the characterisitics of nominal phrase constituents is described, emphasising the relative clause. However, English part is more focused on the non-finite modifiers, as is supposed that their presence in the data will be denser. Hence, there are separate sections speaking about -ing participle, -ed participle, infinitive, adjectives, prepositional phrase, and apposition. The excerption results show that the relative clause may be translated into preposed adjectives and other types of finite dependent clauses. As the next topic,...
Hydromechanic characteristics of clay suspensions
Sedláčková, Markéta ; Mls, Jiří (advisor) ; Císlerová, Milena (referee) ; Šembera, Jan (referee)
A mathematical model of two-phase systems, such as clay suspensions, consists of a set of partial differential equations which reflect both the general laws of mechanics and the relations connecting the involved characteristics of the particular system under consideration. The latter equations are known as constitutive relations. The aim of this study was to find the constitutive relations for kaolin suspensions that are necessary when solving forward problems of fine sludge thickening processes. The task was to design and carry out experimental research of the given suspension and to find a convenient method of utilizing the results for the sake of getting the sought relationships. It follows from the applied mathematical theory of two-phase systems that the sought relationships are hydraulic conductivity of the suspension as a function of the solid-phase concentration and the dependence of the solid-phase concentration on the solid-phase stress. The first part of this study describes the experimental research. Since both the characteristics are difficult to measure, it was necessary to analyze the suspension's characteristics and their measurability. Subsequently, the process of the suspension preparation and the method of laboratory measurements were determined. The following sections present...
Educational differences in family behavior and attitudes
Kubincová, Michaela ; Hamplová, Dana (advisor) ; Sedláčková, Markéta (referee)
The aims of this work are to determine how the education affects attitude to parenthood, real behavior and the way how affects the attitude to parenthood and real behavior in the context of education in last two decades. The theoretical part summarizes knowledge of Czech sociologists. Answers questions how and why the parenthood in Czech society has been changed and influenced by accomplishments of individuals. According to Czech scientists since 1989 the economical change of society, the change of personal values and combinations of this two factors are causing differences in parenthood. The first analytical part is description of real development in birthrate complemented by diagrams. Second analytical part takes a look on female education according to family behavior. The analysis explains that the different family behavior of women is divided according to their education, resulting to the number of children, and in some extent, to their marital status. The third analytical part is based on a quantitive data analysis and is focused on attitudes of different education groups. In this analysis were used data from the ISSP Family (1994, 2002, 2012). It use the percent chance frequency and contingency tables, factor analysis and multivariate regression. The main topic investigates the development of...
Religion and spirituality in contemporary society
Zelenka, Martin ; Duffková, Jana (advisor) ; Sedláčková, Markéta (referee)
Tato práce se bude zabývat stavem náboženské sféry v dnešní době. Cílem bude prozkoumat, popsat a zanalyzovat náboženství a duchovnost v kontextu s některými nejvýraznějšími charakteristikami současné společnosti.
The Internet and socially disadvantaged people
Krátká, Tereza ; Lupač, Petr (advisor) ; Sedláčková, Markéta (referee)
The work deals with the issue of relations between social disadvantage (defined in four dimensions - economic, cultural, social and personal resources) and digital disadvantage of people in the Czech Republic (data from the Aktér 12 - 2011 research; 1106 respondents aged 18 to 89). The main hypothesis of the study verifies these assumptions: 1) socially disadvantaged persons will be more affected by digital disadvantage than people socially included; 2) regular use of Internet aids in overcoming mainly personal and cultural disadvantages; 3) social and digital inclusion correlate positively with some specific types of social and digital disadvantage. The research outputs confirm a strong positive relationship between social disadvantage (in its economic dimension) and digital disadvantage. In terms of cultural disadvantage/inclusion both the group of digitally disadvantaged and the group of digitally included are at the same level. Positive correlation between specific types of social/digital disadvantage and social/digital inclusion was not confirmed - socially included individuals do not show any significant signs of digital disadvantage; and socially disadvantaged people do not indicate any specific features of digital inclusion. Key words: Internet, digital disadvantage, digital divide, social...
