Disentangling the nonlinear effects of habitat complexity on functional responses
SOUKUP, Pavel
Habitat structural complexity modifies trophic interactions by providing refuges and altering predator and prey behavior. The quality and intensity of predator prey interactions can be described by functional responses, that is by the relationship between the number of preys consumed by a predator and initial prey density. We combine two complementary methods of functional response estimation to examine the effects of habitat complexity on the predation of Aeshna cyanea dragonfly larva on Chaoborus obscuripes glassworm larvae. We show that habitat complexity has nonlinear effects on functional response parameters (attack rate and handling time), despite the prevalence of stepwise responses reported in literature. Our results suggest that detailed understanding of habitat complexity effects on food webs requires complementary experimental approaches across a gradient of habitat complexity and should also consider predator and prey behavior.
Role of habitat complexity and predation in the structuring of aquatic communities
SOUKUP, Pavel
This thesis focuses on the roles habitat complexity and predation play in the structuring of aquatic communities. Chapter one provides an overview of the way habitat complexity structures communities separately, and by altering predator prey interactions in all aquatic habitats. The following two chapters examine their combined effects using different predator-prey pairs and time scopes: short-term laboratory experiments and a medium-term mesocosm experiment.
The writing of Guillebert de Lannoy as an historical source
View into the Albigesian wars - fire, sword and the cross of Occitania
Biederman, Jan ; Nejedlý, Martin (advisor) ; Soukup, Pavel (referee)
On a break point between Early Middle Ages and High Middle Ages Christianity existed as it would have been in mist - the old pagan cults of Europe had been abandoning uneasy and slowly their positions and almost immediately they were replaced by a group of new cults - heresies. The first of them stepped into the light or were disclosed already in 11th century. During the next century the number of cases of discovered heretic communities increased in western and central Europe. In 12th century, the southern french region of Occitanie was found by suprised catholic Church as a land with very enlarged dualist heresy. From the beginning the church tried to challenge this situation, which was considered as increasingly endangering of Good order, by means of mission activity and relied on local nobelman and sovereigns. However, the evolution of this situation up to 13th century showed that local nobility had no interest on repressions and tolerated heresy while mission attempts and menace of canonical punishments raised general resistance. This resulted in the assassination of papal legate Pierre de Castelnau. This accident changed the attitude of Church into the proclamation of crusade and so it authorized the application of armed force. The result of this decision threw southern France into the war which took...
A portrayal of the French and Burgundy lands in eyes of a late medieval Czech traveller
Bažant, Vojtěch ; Nejedlý, Martin (advisor) ; Soukup, Pavel (referee)

Sermons of Jindřich from Vildštejn in Litomyšl
Večeře, Vojtěch ; Zilynská, Blanka (advisor) ; Soukup, Pavel (referee)
This thesis Sermons of Jindřich from Vildštejn in Litomyšl deals with the preaching work of the cleric Jindřich of Vildštejn, which is preserved in the manuscript of the Bavarian State Library in Munich (BSB, Clm 14256). In order to describe and evaluate this handwritten collection, the author chooses only a small probe (three of the total of thirteen preachers), in which in various ways he shows the form, context and socio-communicative purpose of the late medieval sermon. These three sermons were held in Litomyšl (1376 and 1378). Two of them are Eucharistic sermons and one is funeral speech on the occasion of the funeral of Charles IV. At the beginning of the whole work, the reader is introduced with the life of the historical personality of Jindřich of Vildštejn who was a member of the Minority Order and who held several episcopal offices throughout his life. In the second part, the author presents a description and classification of selected preaching texts. The third part of the thesis is an interpretative study in which the author tries to elucidate the contemporary communication significance of one important phenomenon of medieval preaching manuscripts such as the abundant use of quotes from the Bible and the authorities. At the very end of the work, the critical edition of three sermons...
