Lantern of the Gods: Solar Deity in Ugaritic Literature; including translation of selected texts

Main goal of present thesis is to compose an overall, complete, and coherent view of the solar deity's role in ancient Ugarit by detailed study of Ugaritic texts regarding Sun Goddess Shapsh, particularly focusing on images and expressions used to characterize mentioned deity. Several texts referring to solar deity are chosen for this purpose: fragments from the Baal cycle - the most extensive Ugaritic work preserved, as well as three other tables (KTU 1.100, KTU 1.107, KTU 1.161) are decided on as those are the ones most related to the Sun Goddess Shapsh. An integral part of this study is translation with commentary and detailed grammatical analysis of selected texts. The thorough study of selected texts yields portrayal of Ugaritic solar deity as a, to a certain degree, chthonic deity connecting the world of gods, men and even the dead. Ugaritic Sun Goddess Shapsh wandering through the heavens and the underworld daily, acts in the name of El, the supreme deity, as the omniscient protector of order, symbol of justice and royal might. Non-Baalic texts furnish other aspects of sun goddess in particular: bond with horses (1.100) and her capabilities of treating the wounds of snake bite (1.107).

King Hezekiah

Summary: In this thesis I have focused on the views of individual biblical and Talmudic authors on King Hezekiah. My goal was primarily to compare the assessment of Hezekiah and his deeds in the texts of the Deuteronomist, Chronicler, and other editors. These authors, editors and maybe even entire schools knew Hezekiah as a historical figure known through his abilities as a ruler, his dedication to the Cult of the Lord, and his human qualities. In their attempt to create a complete historical record, the Deuteronomist and Chronicler both deliberately portrayed the character of King Hezekiah in an idealized form, as described above. One of the goals of this work was to show the reason why they chose to do so. Transpersonal motivations certainly played a role in the contemplations of both of them. Both knew that the written word (even more so the historiography of one's own nation) organized from fragments of oral tradition, passed on from father to son, has great power. Not power over others or God, but power over themselves. The nation of Israel should see itself in the characters of the story related by our authors. While listening to these stories, the people of Jerusalem have the chance to identify themselves with the ailing, repentant and in the end the healed Hezekiah. The goal of the Deuteronomist and...

The Boook of Ruth: Narrative Analysis of the Text

The conclusion of this thesis brings an understanding of the deeper meaning of the book of Ruth and its role in the lives of God's followers. The application of the tools of narrative analysis clearly showed that on the background of Naomi and Ruth's deeply human story unfolds another one. It is the story of the Lord who is invisibly directing events and human destinies to present and reveal the work and mission of his Messiah to the whole mankind. The main characters in the story provide an eloquent example of faith to follow and in a very plastic way imply the role of the Redeemer. Thus the story builds up faith of people in the Lord and prepares them to recognize and accept his Messiah. And this may be the mission and function of the book of Ruth in the biblical canon. Burnt Offering in Old Testament

The focus of this thesis will be an exegesis of the term burnt offering in Old Testament. The diploma thesis deals with the location of the cult (Tent of Meeting, temple), priests in Israel, human offerings and reconstruction of ritual burnt offerings with an evaluation of particular acts based on translation and interpretation of the first chapter of Leviticus. The purpose of this work is to detect, what function and meaning this ritual had for the community of Israel, as well as what message the texts contain, with respect to burnt offerings for the current reader.

Suffering Servant of Lord in Jewish and Christian Tradition

In the work "Suffering servant of the Lord in Jewish and Christian tradition" I primarily deal with the general approach towards the text of Is 52:13 - 53:13. In the first part of this work I present an overview of the historical period in which this text originates. Next I deal with the character of the prophet Isaiah and the main motives of his message. I also mention the manifestation of the songs of a suffering servant in the context of liturgy. For the reader's better orientation, I deal with character of "The Suffering Servant" and my perception of it in traditional Christian and Jewish literature in a separate chapter. One chapter is devoted to a comprehensive categorization of the structure of the text. The focus of this work is in the translation, analysis, and interpretation of the text itself, where my main goal was to show the possible ways to work with the Hebrew text and the potential interpretations this makes possible. I then show a translation of two completely different commentaries to demonstrate how different the interpretation of a text can be when the fundamental preunderstanding differs. The main goal was to give the reader a unified outline of possible approaches to the text and the perception of the servant in a Christian and Jewish environment.

Reflection of Solomon's reign

This thesis treats from a critical point of view the character of Solomon's reign. The time limitation takes in the period from Solomon's accession to the throne to his death and the subsequent separation of the Israeli kingdom. The thesis draws on The First Book of Kings and deals with a critique of Solomon's reign, the causes of the disintegration of the empire, a comparison of The First Book of Kings and The Second Book of Chronicles, which are the main sources for Solomon, and the confrontation between Solomon and his father David. The intention of the thesis is to introduce the period of Solomon's reign and to evaluate the contribution of his reign on Israeli people.

The dissertation brings some new views and actual stimulations for each, i.e. also for the contemporaneous communion of the God's people.
