"'Tis Alright to write about Slovakia like this as Well..." Jakub Deml's Image of the Slovakia in cultural-historical context
Blažejovský, Josef ; Putna, Martin (advisor) ; Pátková, Jana (referee)
The topic of this thesis (as its subtitle says) deals with the cultural and historical context of Jakub Deml's Image of Slovakia. In the first part, the author attempts to find his "own way" to Jakub Deml. In the second part, "Šlépěje" from the "Czechoslovakian era" are interpreted, i.e. IV.- VIII. These fall into the time period after the establishment of the Czechoslovakian Republic, Deml's meeting with Pavla Kytlicová, and his eventual settlement in his native city of Tasov (1919- 21). The third part offers a brief sketch of the cultural and historical context of the Czech-Slovak relationship, later also perceived from the Central European perspective. The fourth part initially uses two different examples to introduce the Image of Slovakia in Czech literature (Němcová, Kálal), and afterwards it turns to the literary analysis of Jakub Deml's Image of Slovakia. In the concluding chapter, this piece is set into the cultural and historical context and compared to other authors.

Konůpka, Petr ; Putna, Martin (advisor) ; Havelka, Miloš (referee)
The thesis focuses on the reception history of Bernard Bolzano (1781- 1848) in the Czech intellectual culture of the 1945-1989 period. The aim of the thesis is not only to summarize existing studies of Bolzano's life and work or to study some of the partial themes related to Bolzano - but to discover basic features of Bolzano reception that can be found accross the different fields of Bolzano research and that are also connected to intellectual and political history background. The expected merit of the thesis can be considered from two different perspectives: In the context of intellectual history the reception of Bolzano is just a very partial theme, however it can expose some of more general features concerning Czech intellectual history of investigated period. From this point of view Bolzano is just a criterion of historical sources selection that enables to study very complex issue of the Czech intellectual history. In the context of Bolzano research this thesis is also a contribution to the better understanding of Bolzano's life and work. The thesis is pointing out themes which should be researched more thoroughly and, it is more important, it discovers the basic contexts of the potential further studies. Keywords: Bernard Bolzano (1781-1848), Czech history 1945-1989, Czech culture 1945-1989,...
Homosexuality in the Praxis and Discourse of Penal Law, Medicine and Civic Society from the Adoption of the 1852 Penal Code to the Adoption of the 1961 Penal Code
Seidl, Jan ; Putna, Martin (advisor) ; Sokolová, Věra (referee) ; Nečasová, Denisa (referee)
This thesis deals with changes in conceptions of homosexuality and homosexual subculture as of something basically different, as they developed from the second third of the 19th century to the second half of the 20th century among Czech lawyers and physicians, as well as with changes of self-conceptualization of the Czech homosexual subculture itself, having occurred in the same time interval. It focuses mainly on attitudes and efforts of those who aimed at contributing to social emancipation of this subculture or - in times of increased persecution of homosexuality during the Nazi occupation - on the impossibility to carry on such efforts. The thesis is divided in five parts - in the first one, the legal context which provoked the emancipation efforts in times of the 1852 Penal Code being in force (i.e. until 1950) is explained; the next four parts focus on these efforts separately in four distinct periods. Thus, the second part deals with the expansion of the modern concept of homosexual identity in the Czech lands before WWI, the third part deals with sexual reform efforts by liberal lawyers and physicians as well as on emancipatory and political efforts by the homosexual community itself in the democratic First Czechoslovak Republic (1918-1938), aiming at decriminalization of homosexual acts,...

Heller, Jan ; Putna, Martin (advisor) ; Havelka, Miloš (referee) ; Šima, Karel (referee)
Transfigurations of the image of the Other in Czech travelogues of the long 19th Century Abstract of the dissertation thesis Mgr. et Mgr. Jan Heller The thesis focuses on constructions of the image of the Other in Czech travelogues of the 19th century. The travelogue is a peripheral literary genre, both an artistic text and a historical source, and thus enables the viewer to combine perspectives of literary criticism and historical anthropology. Special attention is paid to religious motifs owing mainly to the fact that this theme has been left out of focus in the present research thanks to the emphasis on the linguistic and historic character of the Czech national emancipation movement. The intention of the thesis is to describe literary techniques in the individual travelogues (direct representations, narrative strategies, topics, attributes of characters) and the function they serve in the building of the image of the Other and thus of the image of oneself at the same time. The goal ...
Hugo Vavrečka's War. Microhistory From the Threshold of Contemporary History (1945-1952)
Wohlmuth Markupová, Jana ; Putna, Martin (advisor) ; Vaněk, Miroslav (referee) ; Jiroušek, Bohumil (referee)
The dissertation focuses on the microhistorical analysis of the last years of the life of Hugo Vavrečka (1880-1952), technician, journalist, economist, diplomat and sales director of the Baťa company. The theoretical and methodological part elaborates on the epistemological differences between biographical and microhistorical research, after which attention is paid especially to the possibilities of microhistorical research in the field of contemporary history. The methodology of clues (Carlo Ginzburg) and the researcher's own positionality follow, while the sources used are presented. The interpretative part briefly summarizes the basic outlines of Hugo Vavrečka's life before 1944, after which the main research focus is put on his actions from autumn 1944 to his death in August 1952. Thesis analyses Vavrečka's post-war life, his own attitude to the personal and socio- political situation, to its changes, trying to name the approaches and individual motivations or beliefs with which he chose them. Last but not least, the work also focuses on the broader context of his family and friends, as well as on at least partially exposing the steps of his post-war opponents, who largely led him into this uneasy situation.
Katolická reakce na republikánskou výzvu: Nepřátelé brazilské katolické církve optikou "dobrého tisku" (1889-1930)
Kalenda, František ; Putna, Martin (advisor) ; Křížová, Markéta (referee) ; Halbich, Marek (referee)
When Brazil abolished the monarchy and became a republic in 1889, it also embraced an entirely different model of the relationships between State and Catholic Church. Unlike the previous Portuguese colonial (1500-1822) and imperial governments (1822-1889) that exercised strict control over the institutional church known as padroado régio ("royal patronage"), the new regime of the "Old Republic" (1889-1930) gave the Brazilian Catholic hierarchy extraordinary degree of freedom. But at the same time, it deprived it of its traditional privileges - from the status of the official "state church", to secularization of marriages, cemeteries and public education. Facing an unprecedented situation, the Brazilian Catholic Church had to redefine its positions towards the state and society and look for alternative models of mutual relationships both at home and abroad. Based on the officially-sanctioned Catholic press and especially the influential biweekly magazine Mensageiro da Fé, this thesis attempts to reconstruct the perceptions and attitudes of the institutional Catholicism towards challenges brought by the regime change, tracking the image formation of new and re-formulation of old enemies and creation of a new vision for the Catholic role in recently secularized Brazil. keywords: secularization;...
