Problems of children burials in prehistory of Bohemia and Moravia
Vélová, Lucie ; Popelka, Miroslav (advisor) ; Bláhová, Zuzana (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with children remains in archeological cultures of the Bronze Age at the area of Czech Republic. 1318 findings have been gathered and put into a database together with all available details. Special attention has been set upon multiple child burials, deposition of child remains into settlement pits, presence of charities and individuals with exceptionally rich funerary goods. Individual chapter has been dedicated to phenomena connected with children in the Bronze Age such as burial of unburned bodies in jars, anthropophagy and human sacrifices. The thesis is complemented by comparison with findings of child remains from the Neolithic and the Eneolithic (which the author analysed in her bachelor thesis).
Issue of stone fortifications on Iberian Peninsula from 4th to 2nd millennium BC
Brathová, Gabriela ; Dobeš, Miroslav (advisor) ; Popelka, Miroslav (referee)
Walled enclosures on the Iberian Peninsula can be classified into fortification activities that took place in the Copper Age respectively Eneolithic across Europe, and from a variety of reasons. Even in the Iberian Peninsula this kind of fortification is not unique. At the same time in the area of Iberian Meseta extend ditched enclosures (Díaz-del-Río 2004). Walled enclosures that stand in the centre of the attention of this work are situated mainly in four regions: southeast and southwest of the Peninsula, Portuguese Estremadura and north Meseta and its western periphery. Walled enclosures lie in most cases on so-called spurs or hilltops. Their position is associated with flows of large rivers such as the Guadalquivir, Guadiana, Tagus, Duoro and Mondego and with their tributaries, or they are connected directly with the sea through estuaries. In the case of dry southeast area the enclosures are associated with smaller local rivers as Andarax (Los Millares). There exist many theories in conjunction with the proximity of deposits of copper ore and its processing, for example the "colonial" theory or the theory of factories. In the context of these models stand in the centre of the attention the role of indigenous inhabitants. Key words Iberian Peninsula - Eneolithic - Walled enclosures - Metallurgy

Pavlíčková, Eva ; Popelka, Miroslav (advisor) ; Stolz, Daniel (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the distribution of lithic raw materials in the Neolithic, whereas the main interest was focused on the area of Germany. The dispersion of chipped and polished stone artefacts in time and space was studied on the basis of available literature. The first part of this work presents existing knowledge about spreading specific types of lithic raw materials. The second part introduces sites from different federal states with finds of chipped and polished stone industry from which was it possible to determine the composition of lithic raw materials collections. Gender analysis in the interpretation of sociocultural aspects of the Neolithic
Remišová Věšínová, Kamila ; Popelka, Miroslav (advisor) ; Podborský, Vladimír (referee) ; Pavúk, Vladimír (referee)
Gender is a social construct expressing that attributes and behavior connected with the image of man and woman are generated by culture and society. Unlike sex, a universal category that does not change with time and space, gender shows that the determination of roles, behavior and social norms connected with men and women differs within various societies, time periods and social groups. Archaeology is a culturally and historically conditioned scientific discipline though it quite often fails to remember its cultural basis. Its main task, the research in cultural and social structure of ancient populations, is a very complicated task and its outcome is often uncertain for there is no possibility of feedback. Archaeology, same as all other humanities, cannot claim fully objective scientific results. However, in its essence tied with exploring the life of ancient populations, it strives for objective findings and thus it necessarily has to focus on material culture, namely its expressions and its embedment in social structures. It is only material culture that can mediate dependable results. But if material culture is not interpreted as embedded in a cultural and social context, it becomes an unfruitful source with zero informational value. Thanks to new approaches, theories and methods that have emerged...
Men and caves in the Neolithic Period
Peša, Vladimír ; Popelka, Miroslav (advisor) ; Svoboda, Jiří (referee) ; Pavlů, Ivan (referee)
Men and Caves in the Neolithic Period Vladimír Peša ABSTRACT From the beginning of archaeological excavations in the 19th century up to the present day, caves as archaeological sites have most often been interpreted as longer- or shorter-term settlements, hideaways or shelters for herdsmen; other interpretations that are considered for caves are cult functions and shelters for social outcasts. I see the beginnings of these notions of universal functions for caves in two contexts. Up until the second half of the 20th century there was a predominant interest throughout most of Europe in Palaeolithic history, and an interpretive model of Palaeolithic cave settlement was subsequently applied to frequently less distinct or even different find situations dating to post-Mesolithic periods. Secondly, at the close of the 19th century caves in the general consciousness of society (i.e. including archaeological) were mainly thought of as warfare shelters or as cover from inclement weather during agricultural activities away from the settlement. Speculation on the greater importance of cult activities and the symbolism of caves doesn't appear with greater regularity in literature until the 1980s; and yet, the settlement impression of caves persists. Using the Neolithic period as an example, the submitted work attempts...
The Paper on Understanding the Subsistence Manner on the Transition of Neolithic and Eneolithic Age (a Comparative Study between the Western Culture Complex and Regions of Bohemia and Moravia)
Mattová, Sabina ; Popelka, Miroslav (advisor) ; Neustupný, Evžen (referee) ; John, Jan (referee)
The study presented deals with the phenomenon of increased hunting activity on the transition of the Neolithic and Eneolithic Age, the reasons of which have been so far investigated only in regard to environmental conditions of locations. The phenomenon is observed on locations of a wide area of Middle Europe. Nevertheless, there exist locations with prevailing agricultural economy. On the basis of a detailed comparative analysis of the material culture of the Western culture circle and Bohemia and Moravia, the study aims to trace the reflection of the phenomenon in archaeological materials - differences between locations with predominant domestic sources, and locations with predominant wild sources. Alongside, the study deals with a possible environmental impact on increasing hunting tendencies. In order to created a database, a detailed catalogue of locations has been compiled. The catalogue holds the most essential information on material culture with regard to expected agricultural manners. The catalogue also serves as a clue for setting particular indicators of the database, the purpose of which is to organise the data in a comparable form. Subsequently, a descriptive database has been compiled. The database traces the reflection of agricultural base of the individual locations. By means of a...

The neolithic site Tuchlovice, distr. of Kladno
Knotová, Hana ; Popelka, Miroslav (advisor) ; Stolz, Daniel (referee)
The submitted work deals with processing of primarily neolithic settlement material from the archaeological research in Tuchlovice cadaster. The research led by M. Buchvaldek took place in 1960. The excavated settlement was dated to the III. degree of the Linear Pottery culture and to the II.-III. degree of the Stroked Pottery culture. One object belonged to jordanov culture period. Continuity of habitation cannot be proved, which may be caused by the limited scale of the research that couldn't explore the whole settlement. On the contrary we must admit the possibility that presented site formed part of a larger neolithic settlement area together with settlements explored earlier in the southwestern direction. Key words: Neolithic - eneolithic - Tuchlovice - settlement - central Bohemia
