Jan Nepomuk count Harrach and Czech artists
Štěpánová, Šárka ; Pokorná, Magdaléna (advisor) ; Parkan, František (referee)
Johann Nepomuk von Harrach (1828-1909) was a Czech aristocrat remarkable for his involvement in culture, industry and politics. The aim of this thesis is to clearly describe Johann Nepomuk von Harrach and his relationship with the Czech artist. The thesis mainly analyses the correspondence between Johann Nepomuk von Harrach and Czech architect and patron Josef Hlávka and correspondence with the poet, and tutor of Nepomuk's son, Julius Zeyer. To illustrate the relationship and styles of communication of von Harrach more clearly, the thesis analyses the correspondence between Otto von Harrach, the son of Johann Nepomuk, and Julius Zeyer. The basis of the thesis is correspondence stored in the Literární archiv Památníku národního písemnictví. The subject of research is also count Harrach's communication strategy, which shows the difference between communication with a patron and with a poet. KEYWORDS Johann Nepomuk von Harrach (1828-1909), Harrach family, correspondence, Czech artists, Josef Hlávka (1831-1908), Julius Zeyer (1841-1901), Otto von Harrach (1963- 1935)
A Slightly Different 1930s - A Perspective on the 1930s Crises through the Eyes of Czech Community in America, 1929-1939.
Durčák, Michael ; Pokorná, Magdaléna (advisor) ; Šedivý, Ivan (referee)
Czech immigrants in America played an important role in the establishment of an independent Czechoslovakia after World War I, and even today more than one million Americans claim Czech ancestry. Czech Americans understandably kept a close eye on the young democracy in the centre of Europe during the interwar period. Their reflection is recorded primarily within the regional periodicals, which, despite their partial availability, are still not sufficiently reflected within the historiography. In general, the most researched period is the "peak" period of the immigrants America around the First World War, but elsewhere there are large gaps, especially in the interwar period. In my thesis, I will attempt a comparative view of Czechs in America on the events of 1929 to 1939, with the outer points of my examination being the crash of the New York Stock Exchange in the fall of 1929 to the occupation of the remnants of Czechoslovakia by Nazi Germany and the declaration of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia in March 1939. I will focus specifically on Czech periodicals published in three locations - Chicago, Nebraska, and Texas. Comparing these three perspectives will yield a unique comparison of the perspective of Czech Americans across urban and rural areas in three different states across the United...
Dispute of Sázava glassworks after Josef Kavalier's death
Havlová, Kateřina ; Pokorná, Magdaléna (advisor) ; Foltýn, Dušan (referee)
In the year 1835, František Kavalír founded glassworks in Sázava. It managed to prosper enough to take part in various international glass exhibition (for example in Paris and London) despite all obstacles, including natural ones. Sázava glassworks functioned without larger problems until the year 1903 when Josef, the son of František Kavalír, died. Since in his last will, there was written that his son Vladimír, who worked with his father on the operation of the factory for twenty years, was not to inherit the factory, instead he was to become a mere administrator, the ownership was to be given to Josef's grandson Vladimír Josef who needed to be of age at the time of his father's passing. Otherwise, the factory was to pass to Marie Srbová, daughter of Josef. But Vladimír Kavalier died in 1919 and his wasn't of age yet. Srb brothers had taken advantage of their mother's father's last will and started to demand Sázava glassworks. In the twenties of 20th century, both families led highly expansive judicial inquiry that culminated in indebtedness of both families up till the year 1941 when it came to the loss of all four existing glassworks. Thanks to the sources provided by Archive of the Czech National Bank and State Regional Archives Kutná Hora I will be able to use the direct method (study of the...
