Durkheim's Sociology as a Political Project
Maršálek, Jan ; Petrusek, Miloslav (advisor) ; Balon, Jan (referee)
Rethinking Justice in Common Sense
Pilařová, Eva ; Tuček, Milan (advisor) ; Petrusek, Miloslav (referee)
Within the university colloquium in winter 2006 a set of questions came into being considering fairness and justice in dimensions which are not quite conventional in Czech quantitative research. For the purposes of the survey the set was called "common justice" and was included into the omnibus research of public opinion "Our Society" on January 2006. The following essay reassumes the results of this inquiry and is composed of two parts or main chapters. The main part summarizes existing approaches in the field of justice and fairness theories including the historical development of ideas about this phenomenon. In this part I deal with theoretical concepts of justice and dimensions which form central thematic units in quantitative research of fairness, but I also consider the common theoretical level concerning fairness as philosophical issue. In the next chapter I summarize the situation in the field of contemporary postmodern sociology of fairness and analyze the mentioned set of "common justice" questions regarding circumscribed connections and contributions of these questions to the problems of understanding the justice within common sense and its more general meaning. In this analysis I deal with comparison of opinions on actual and ideal form of fairness and fair principles, and its relations...

Avant-garde theories in Czech architecture and culture of living

The suicide - Masaryk's lifelong problem
Kotek, Martin ; Petrusek, Miloslav (advisor) ; Paulíček, Miroslav (referee)
The work is focused on the theme of suicide in the presentation of T. G. Masaryk. Author's aim is to chart the Masaryk's life in such a way as to affect how the topic of suicide goes through the Masaryk's life and how is reflected in his work and opinions on the modern society. Is also pointed out, how this theme, in the background of Masaryk's philosophy, sociology and theology, mingles into all of these areas and connects them. The first part is devoted to young childhood of Masaryk and to his experience at the beginning of his academic career. It is outlined, how Masaryk got to know the theme of suicide and how he took it as his own. Another section is devoted to his personality and personal views on the world. Substantial part of the work is then focused on the interpretation of the religion and the modern developments of society in the administration of Masaryk and his theory of suicide. Following this, the author deals not only with this work demonstrative moral decay of society, but also with other Masaryk's works, in which is the problem of suicide reflected. The last part is devoted to criticism of Masaryk's concept from the mouth of past and contemporary authors and then the comments to the validity of Masaryk theory for today's society. So, beside the presentation, how was the whole...
Forming the "cosmoworld" and finding its essence
Horáková, Klára ; Šmídová, Olga (advisor) ; Petrusek, Miloslav (referee)
This dissertation thesis on the issue "How Cosmoworld Forms and What It Is" deals with the formation and content of a magazine for young women named Cosmopolitan. The aim of this work is to ascertain, whether the type of the woman constructed by this magazine is the emancipated one, to uncover how the magazine defines itself or, put more aptly, how it helps to maintain traditional stereotypes attributed to womanhood. In the introduction, the author pursues the basic theoretical concept and methodological tools suitable to apply in analysing media like Cosmopolitan. The very research into the process of production of the magazine and its content is covered in the second part of the thesis. Using the means of discursive analysis, the author attempts to resolve the type of womanhood re/constructed by the magazine and to work out what are the backdrops or frames which the magazine sets womanhood in. Further, we see the author researching the very creation of the magazine (the ethnomethodological observation in the editorial office), identifying the rules followed in writing articles for Cosmopolitan. Having analysed the content of Cosmopolitan and the process of its production, the author has come to the conclusion that Cosmopolitan re/produces a woman who sees her liberation and emancipation in sexual freedom...
Sovereignty and constitutional democracy
Gümplová, Petra ; Petrusek, Miloslav (advisor) ; Linek, Lukáš (referee)
The goal of this thesis is to rearticulate the discourse of sovereignty in political theory and to outline a model of sovereignty compatible with premises and institutions of constitutional democracy. The underlying assumption of my project is that sovereignty is an indispensable feature of modern political order and that tendencies to move beyond sovereignty are based on the misunderstanding of the concept. Inspired by Habermas's theory, my reconstruction of sovereignty will focus on the idea of co-originality and mutual containment of legal and political process and on the discursive- proceduralist conception of political autonomy which articulates a normative dimension of my understanding of sovereignty. An attempt to develop the framework of a normative theory of sovereignty is meant to redeem the discourse of sovereignty against its critics while at the same time revoke authoritarian implications based on sovereignty claims. The project of rearticulation of sovereignty is meant as a contribution to the theory of constitutional democracy.
Music Industry and Autonomy of the Field of Artificial Music
Prýmková, Karolína ; Balon, Jan (advisor) ; Petrusek, Miloslav (referee)
The thesis "Music Industry and Autonomy of the Field of Artificial Music" describes the relationship of music industry and classical music in contemporary society. The fundamental theory of this study is Pierre Bourdieu's account of the structure of the artistic field. According to his theory, each artistic genre is allocated between two antagonistic poles. The pole of the pure art, which represents high aesthetic values, is the first one and the pole of large scale production that is based on economical logic is the second one. The basic claim in the study says that the principles of music industry, which occupies a nearby position to the pole of large scale production, are gradually diffusing into the classical music. Thus, the classical music is loosing autonomy due to leaving its original anti-economical logic and as a genre it is approximating to the pole of large scale production. This movement is especially caused by three processes: the regression of listening, described by Theodor Adorno in his critical concepts of culture industry; the expansionism of the music industry and the financial dependence of media and other institutions on advertisement producers or on sponsores.
