The foreign policy of the United States of America towards Nicaragua after the Cuban Revolution
Černá, Kateřina ; Perutka, Lukáš (advisor) ; Raška, Francis (referee)
This thesis examines the foreign policy of the United States towards Nicaragua between 1961-1973. When the John F. Kennedy administration took office in 1961, there was concern about developments in Cuba and, in particular, the possibility of a similar fate in Latin American countries. This concern gave rise to the largest foreign aid program up to that time, the Alliance for Progress. Although it was a comprehensive aid scheme taking into account both economic and social issues, the results of the Alliance were contradictory. Nicaragua was a case in point. This paper uses the case study method to explain the results of the Alliance for Progress using Nicaragua as an example. By synthesizing literary sources and secondary literature, the various objectives of the Alliance for Progress are evaluated. The first part of the thesis examines the political situation of the United States both domestically and globally. The second part of the thesis describes the nature of the Alliance for Progress, the fulfilment of its goals, and the implications for the people of the Republic of Nicaragua. The thesis concludes that in the case of Nicaragua, the Alliance for Progress succeeded in the economic sphere. However, the vast majority of social issues remained unresolved and the Alliance's main objective, to...
Creating and Preserving Community: Czech Americans in Omaha, Nebraska.
Shattuck, Stephanie Marie ; Králová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Perutka, Lukáš (referee)
Czechs are one of the many diasporic communities that exist in the United States. The state of Nebraska contains one of the largest Czech diasporas in the country. This thesis looks at the Czech diaspora in Omaha, Nebraska - the largest city in the state. Through the use of interviews and archival research, a fragmented microhistory of the community is created answering the questions of how the community has changed since its founding, how it maintains its ethnic heritage, how it represents itself to the public, and what its future holds. This thesis argues that the key challenges to the vitality of the community are generational shifts, conflicts and lack of cooperation between community organizations, and finances.

Corruption phenomenon as a populist tool in Mexico: the case of A. M. López Obrador's rhetoric in 2018 presidential campaign
Primasová, Rachel ; Perutka, Lukáš (advisor) ; Raška, Francis (referee)
The thesis entitled The Phenomenon of corruption as an instrument of populism in Mexico: the case of A. M. López Obrador's rhetoric in the 2018 presidential campaign examines the corruption struggle of AMLO, the President of Mexico in the 2018-2024 period. His strong anti-corruption rhetoric in the 2018 election campaign led to many expectations, both among the public and foreign organizations. However, after the first half of the Mexican President's term, there has been no successful anti-corruption fight; instead, Mexico's position on corruption has worsened. The failure to tackle the problem of bribery, corruption scandals close to the president, the unclear methodology of the anti-corruption fight, together with López Obrador's history as a populist rhetorician, leads to the question of how far the promised fight against corruption was serious and how far it was just a tool to gain the necessary public support. The author's thesis confirms the hypothesis that in López Obrador's case it was a matter of using the issue of corruption as a tool of political strategy of populism. This theory assumes the use of appropriate circumstances by a populist actor to achieve the set goals. Institutional weakness, the importance of the issue of corruption and the discredited nature of previous governments created the...
The Bay of Pigs and its influence on U.S.-Cuba relations
Jaroš, Milan ; Pondělíček, Jiří (advisor) ; Perutka, Lukáš (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the Bay of Pigs invasion which had been an important part of the U.S.-Cuba relations in the 1960s. The period between the Cuban revolution and the Cuban missile crisis was marked by rapid deterioration of those relations. The thesis is set exactly in this time frame. The invasion was the outcome of the previous deterioration and Castro's victory became the reason for further escalation of the hostilities between the United States and Cuba. This thesis answers the question what decision-making process led to the actual execution of the invasion, what mistakes caused the invasion to fail, who is to blame for this outcome and what consequences did the American failure have on further evolution of the U.S.-Cuba relations. It analyses steps of the planning process and the influence of all the interested parties on this process. It reaches conclusion that the aggressive approach was implemented because of cold war circumstances and the communist threat, the American fear of losing their influence in the western hemisphere and personal ambitions of involved participants. The responsibility for the failure cannot be assigned to just Kennedy's decision making, the CIA's planning or poorly organized Cuban opposition because the fiasco resulted from all these things together....
Searching optimal strategies for the number field sieve
Perůtka, Lukáš ; Drápal, Aleš (advisor) ; Růžička, Pavel (referee)
In this work we study the number field sieve algorithm. Our main focus is on its theoretical background. We present all important theorems which are needed for a full understanding of the algorithm. We also describe the most widely used implementation of the parts of the algorithm and we discuss in which situation they should be used. At the end we show results from measurements of sieving phase on the implementation which was written for our Department of Algebra.
New Deal's Impact on the Unemployment in the USA in the 1930s
Šíma, Adam ; Sehnálková, Jana (advisor) ; Perutka, Lukáš (referee)
This bachelor thesis examines the impact of New Deal program on the unemployment in the USA in 1930s. New Deal was a series of measures reacting to the consequences of Great Depression created by Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his Brain Trust. Firstly, thesis seeks to identify the unemployment estimates most suitable for set goals. It proceeds to analyze the unemployment in this era on the national as well as regional level and finds out that changes in unemployment rates reacted to the creation of public works projects. In more detail it focuses on South Atlantic region and looks for the causes of surprisingly high increase of employment rate in the period of 1929-1940. Next follows a case study of New Deal's impact on African Americans in this region. In this matter the thesis concludes, that increasing employment in the 1930s did not apply to black population in the same ways as to white population. New Deal's impact thus differed significantly throughout the US regions as well as in relation to various demographic groups.
