On the concept of composition in the writing On literary composition of Dionysius of Halicarnassus
Pavlík, Jiří ; Dostálová, Růžena (advisor) ; Muchnová, Dagmar (referee)
The text relates to rhetorical theory, stylistics and the history of literary criticism. It deals with a theory of style which has been presented by Dionysius of Halicarnassus in his treatise On literary composition. The literary style is treated in his writing in view of its compositional aspect so-called synthese (gr. ) that is the manner in which the words are connected. The thesis is based on a critical and analytical reading of primary sources as well as to technical literature. It surveys the recent research into several questions and deals with the compositional aspects of style in context of contemporary interest in the Hellenistic euphonic poetics. After two introductory chapters which deal with the Dionysius extant critical writings and the manuscripts and structure of the treatise On literary compositon, the thesis introduces the Dionysian concept of the synthese and its historical and conceptual background. The third chapter deals with a delimitation of the synthese and the other stylistic fields relating to the word selection (gr. ) as well as with the pre-eminence of the synthese considering its aesthetic impression. The next chapter presents three patterns of the conception of the synthese which appear in the Dionysian writing in different measure. Dionysius focuses on the third of them...
Business and social activities of V.F. Červený and his sons in the context of family life and political-economic upswing of nationally conscious Czech society
The Mystery of the Woman and the Beast: Rhetorical-Narrative Analysis of Revelation 17:1 - 18
Schejbal, Michal ; Lukeš, Jiří (advisor) ; Pavlík, Jiří (referee)
The Mystery of the Woman and the Beast Rhetorical-Narrative Analysis of Revelation 17:1-18 This diploma thesis called "The Mystery of the Woman and the Beast" seeks to unveil the mysterious message of Revelation 17:1-18 by applying the rhetorical-narrative analysis to the text. This analysis entails a specific methodology drawn from the synthesis of both rhetorical and narrative criticism with special regard to persuasive features. The conception of the thesis is based on understanding the message of the text in its own right communicated primarily to its own implicit audience distancing itself from premature theologizing often done especially when dealing with the book of Revelation. Due to the narrative focus of the thesis, considerable space is devoted to analyzing apocalyptic literary tradition and literary aspects of the book itself. Attention is paid to the origin of the apocalyptic tradition as well as the nature of its genre together with its specific motifs and function. The book of Revelation is seen as a part of long-developing apocalyptic tradition sharing some common traits while still being original in its own right. The unique qualities of Revelation are then fully explored in the following chapter. Of particular importance are the genre, imagery, intertextuality, and structure of the book....
Bible Texts Quotations in Selected Writings of the Apostolic Fathers
Dittrich, Šimon ; Pavlík, Jiří (advisor) ; Dus, Jan (referee)
The present thesis focuses on the way the seven selected writings of the Apostolic Fathers quote the texts of the Bible. Beginning with discussion of the term "Apostolic Fathers", the thesis turns to explaining the key expressions used in the next chapters, namely Quotation, Composite Quotation, Allusion, Paraphrase, Scriptural Language, Exemplum. The second part, the principal part of the thesis, contains close analysis of the quotations within the selected writings. Attention is also paid to the question, which books of the Bible were quoted by the individual authors, whereas the investigation concentrates primarily on how the quotations are used. For the purpose of unbiased comparison of the single writings' citation technique, the total number of quotations, the length of all quotations in total and the length of each writing was enumerated, the length of the writing being expressed in the count of standard pages. In this way, two significant quantities were achieved, namely proportional bulk of quotations in the writing and quotation frequency expressed in the number of quotations per standard page. Besides these figures, attention was paid also to the role of quotations in individual writings with regard to their genres. In the 1 Clement, the highest proportional bulk of quotations is found,...
The function of the antitheses in the Sermon on the Mount
Janovská, Kristýna ; Lukeš, Jiří (advisor) ; Pavlík, Jiří (referee)
The bachelor thesis called "The function of the antitheses in the Sermon on the Mount" deals with the analysis of the six Jesus' antitheses, which are part of the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew. The aim of this thesis was to analyze these antitheses in the context of creating the context of the Jewish Christian community which, after 70 AD, was in a certain existential crisis. Evangelist Matthew was probably a Christian from the Jews rather than the Gentiles, which led to his effort to display on Jesus as a Jew a relationship to the Law that does not change and is still up to date. Each antithesis is initiated by reference to the Old Testament commandments or provisions, followed by the interpretation of Jesus, which confirms his authority to the God called the Messiah, who will bring the people out of the slavery of sin. Jesus is the new Moses who puts the provisions of the Old Testament or the commandment into the light of greater justice. My principles for analyzing these opposites were the use of methods and knowledge of modern research along with the narrative method. My endeavor was to show Jesus as the one who respects the Law and fulfills what has been said by the prophets.

Thesis detects their internal connection and their connection with the complex of the Gospel. It presents the capture of the theme and its shift in the subsequent parables, being aware of the metonymic density of the parables and of their form and subject matter interconnected in selected texts to impressive effect, in the very moments of surprise and of reversal.
Aristides Quintilianus and the Position his work on music holds among the Extant musicological Treatises
Slavíková, Marcela ; Fischerová, Sylva (advisor) ; Dykast, Roman (referee) ; Pavlík, Jiří (referee)
The extant ancient Greek treatises on music show very striking similarities regarding the explanation of music theory, although they span a time period of seven centuries. The aim of this thesis is to prove that these similarities were not caused by the missing development of music, but rather by the habit of ancient musicologists, who seem to have preferred the information contained in their sources, however old they were, to the description of real musical practice. In this respect Aristides Quintilianus, an author of the 3rd century AD, who wrote three books On music, was not different. This thesis includes an explanation of the development of music as it is depicted by contemporary non-musicological writers and notational diagrams, then presents the work of Aristides Quintilianus per se as well as in the context of the other ancient Greek musicological research. There is also a translation and a commentary on Aristides's first book, where the musical changes should be present. Finally, by a comparison of some parallel passages found in Aristides's first book and in the rest of the extant musicological treatises, Aristides's sources are exposed.
