Revitalisating the city - interaction of the municipality and the citizens
Czastka, Sven ; Uherek, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Pargač, Jan (referee)
Current development in those European cities affected by its post-industrial history is designated as revitalisation. However, since many years this process has taken place in Western Europe and in the United States of America, in Czech towns has been this phenomenon quite new. Revitalisation or city revival is a complicated action encompassing different stakeholders, oscillating consecutively between construction of buildings and regeneration of citizens and their local identification. In this diploma thesis I focused on an interaction between main participants in the capital city o Usti Region - the City of Ústí nad Labem. I have identified the city administration, the city council and the civic associations and clubs as main city players. The aim of this diploma thesis was to determine the notion of revitalization and possible connotations of its usage related to cities and a concrete application in Ústí nad Labem. Furthermore to describe relations and acting of the city administration, the city council and the associations and clubs as stakeholders in the process of revitalisation. In the conclusion of this thesis I offered a few suggestions for possible more beneficent cooperation of both sides. In the course of participated observation and from the results of the inquiry has come out, that in Ústí nad...
Uig - local community
Školová, Markéta ; Šatava, Leoš (advisor) ; Pargač, Jan (referee)
Gaelic language revival is the focus of many linguists and anthropologists. There are many generalisations written about this subject. This study is primarily based on a case study of the Uig community on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. With the use of historical and current descriptions of the community, problems are outlined associated with the Gaelic language in this mainly Gaelic speaking community. Despite the high number of recorded Gaelic speakers in Uig (67%, Census 2001), I consider this not a true reflection of the number of people who can use Gaelic daily. There are still many families who underestimate and therefore undermine the status of their language, despite the official support of Gaelic Education by the Scottish Government. Interestingly, there is an evident passivity of parents to enrol their children into Gaelic-medium units at the Uig Primary School yet, many parents do consider Gaelic as part of their cultural heritage. In Uig, a rural area, the number of higher educated inhabitants is minimal. Very lately, a lack of housing, has appeared as a problem and the local Community Council must deal with it. Many of the people questioned in this study are witnessing the language shift towards English in their own families. There seems to be some progress towards a reversing language...
Buryat shamanism
Havlíček, Marek ; Kašpar, Oldřich (advisor) ; Pargač, Jan (referee)
After the political changes in East Europe and Central Asia at the end of 80s of the 20th century some latitude of religious liberty, which had been limited till then, occured. It made possible to restore original traditions and gradually return the religion from illegality back to the public life. Ecclesiastic and confessional institutions started to restore in accordance with those ones operating in the period of Imperial Russia. A very specific situation arose from Buryat shamanism, which had never been under the state and authority control like other confessions had. Buryat shamans began to restore and renew extinct traditions mostly by the way of studying professional ethnographical and religious literature and inspired by the new philosophical currents of the tardy wave of New Age, they complemented numerous gaps and deficiency with their own ideas. During the last 15 years several organisations associtiating Buryat shamans have come into existence. They obviously differ from each other in their specialisation, traditions they gather from, and even in their range. Some of them are local, others try to unite all shamans in the territory settled by the Buryats, but there are also small formal and informal groups gathering disciples of a master. All associations of shamans in some ways use traditional...

Mair, Jana ; Uherek, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Vaishar, Antonín (referee) ; Pargač, Jan (referee)
1 Abstract This thesis deals with everyday life in major cities during the post-socialist transformation in the Czech Republic. It aims to contribute to our understanding of the everyday life of the inhabitants of Brno and Ostrava during the period and to explain the impact of the post- socialist transformation on their lives and social relations. The results are based on extensive fieldwork (i.e., a questionnaire survey and structured interviews of the inhabitants of the inner cities) conducted in Brno and Ostrava in 2007-2009. The fieldwork was based on ethnographic work describing the sociability and social relations of the inhabitants of the inner cities, with an emphasis on kinship and neighbourly relations. During the post-socialist transformation, Brno and Ostrava underwent a variety of significant changes, ranging from industrial transformation to lifestyle adjustments. They had developed differently both during and prior to socialism. For example, Ostrava became focused mainly on heavy industry, while Brno had a more varied economic structure. Since 1989, these cities have continued to diverge. As for the attitudes of informants toward their lives in the inner cities, they varied greatly. As for sociability, both neighbourly relations and kinship form a mosaic of features, some of which were...
Islamic and media territory
Kostelecká, Lenka ; Pargač, Jan (advisor) ; Šalanda, Bohuslav (referee)
1 Currently, the media perform a very controversial function, which is still to be evaluated, and it cannot be assumed yet, that the media would be able to react adequately at the state of relations between Europe and Islam. In its quest for objectivity of description, the media are unable to meet the requirement of the so-called Second Modernity, i.e., to investigate their own interpretive framework set behind references and resources, that shape the media and allow them to act as an intermediary between what they refer about, and to whom they refer. All of this somehow without knowing, what brings the possibility of conveying something through communication. It's just a different, more differentiated phase of trying and searching to find the way to the so-called implicit knowledge, by which some discourses are able to emancipate from stereotypical schemas and patterns of coupling, the separation and formation of statements about reality. Thus, the contemporary commentators of the European and Islamic relations are faced with analogous problems, as the media: i.e., in-compatibility, self-referencing and tacit assumptions of knowledge. If we already talked about the double differential explanatory schema of Europe and its relation to Islam, we mentioned two essential aspects: The first is forming or...

Czech techno subculture on change of the century
Zeman, Daniel ; Pargač, Jan (advisor) ; Tomandl, Miloš (referee)
Techno subculture has often been discussed in public and media in the last decade. Police intervention during CZECHTEK 2005 raised the question within the excited discussion: "What is the essence of techno"? The overflow of unprofessional explanations published in media, following the incident, created the demand on serious explanation of the phenomenon. This work tries to explain the phenomenon of subcultures genesis with the help of theory outlined by Van Gennep and further extended by Victor Turner, i.e. subcultures are understood as archetypal continuation of initiation rituals in modern industrial society. Techno party is a ritual way how to create the anti-structure area and establish a liminoid environment in which the adolescents realize their relativity through the changed status of mind and they develop the attitudes to each other as well as within the society. As any social phenomenon fulfils more functions at the same time, this interpretation must be considered as one of the possible explanations. Furthermore also the work of Michel Maffesoli and the idea of neotribalism are taken into consideration. This work also reflects the evolution of subcultures from the beginning to the present and at the same time it reflects the studies of the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies in Birmingham and...
