PEKAŘOVÁ, Martina
This bachelor's degree paper sets the presentation of the Veselý family mill house its aim, presenting examples of legal and other problems of the mill house and substantially also uncovering the common life of a South Bohemian mill house in the period from the 17th century to World War I. This paper is based on the chronicles of the family archive which {--} in the given social stratum {--} represents an extraordinary unit, namely by its scope and the level of condition and physical state of the related documents. The main emphasis is on the 19th century because most of the family archive materials processed relate to it. The first chapter of the paper deals with historical development of the mills and miller's trade in general. The next one describes the mill in Čelkovice before it was purchased by the first owner from the Veselý family. The crucial points of this paper are chapters dealing with economical and legal aspects of the mill house. Particular subchapters concerning the economical aspects of the mill house life are aimed at the mill house owner and the questions of inheritance, at the mill house incomes resulting primarily from entrepreneurial activities and leaseholds and at the mill house expenses, concerning mostly various charges, taxes, land and real estate purchases and construction works and reconstructions of the mill house buildings and machine equipment. The fifth chapter describes legal affairs. Its first subchapter focuses, in general, on the development of water legislation, corporation bodies and legal standards which were obligatory for all mill-men and even other craftsmen using water-power as driving motion of their machines. The second subchapter describes mostly the arguments of the Veselý family with neighbouring mill houses and also advances the prohibition of the Slup usage for fishing which became the matter under dispute of most Czech mill-men with state bureaucracy and jurisdiction. The conclusion assesses and recapitulates the knowledge mentioned by then and more thoroughly focuses on the preserved family archive as a valuable historical source which offers a vast amount of other questions and fields of exploration. Bibliography and list of material sources is also part of the paper, including appendices with demonstrations of documents relating to the Veselý family and their mill, together with photographs and pictures taken from the family archive.
