The concepts of literary space in the Slovak prose of the 70s of the 20th century

The collection of five interpretative essays deals with various concepts of home and its different spaee speeifieations in the officially published prose of the 70s of the last century in Slovakia. Through the analysis of the literary spaee we enter an unfathomed region whose comprehension may also change - to a great extent - the existing sight of the official production of the "normalisation period". When interpreting the individual texts, the emphasis was placed on observing especially the common features of the literary space. That is the reason why even reiterating ehapter titles were chosen (horizontal and vertical forms of the space, open or closed space, transitions points, topos of the journey periphery and forms of border, etc.). By their synthesis we may eome to the eonelusion that the seleeted authors (Dušan Dušek, Július Baleo, Ladislav Ballek and Stanislav Rakús) are arguing especially against the diverse representations of the power through different concepts of the space. Jewish identity and its development in reflexion of Slovak literature

The Jewish theme and its various aspects are slightly processed in the Slovak literature. The aim of this thesis is to point out the importance of the topic. The main guideline of each interpretation is the term of identity, which is also a relevant aspect when presenting a broader range of contexts. Identity, in this case, is a phenomenon that can be best seized in the opposition of "we" versus "them", when its meaning and content (who and what am I, who and what are you?) are reflected in the most accurate way. The Slovak-Jewish relations are a representative example of such a binary opposition. The hypothesis of the work is that the representation practice of Slovak literature regarding the Jewish topic may be related to the non-literary context. The focus of the research is the examination of the constructions of Jewish identities that appeared in various interpretative and compositional layers of works of Slovakian high literature. The works of non-Jewish authors are considered to be hetero-interpretations, while the works of Jewish authors are self-interpretations of the same phenomenon, Jewish identity. Poetry of Chosen Poetesses, Debutants of the Seventies and Eighties of the 20th Century (Poetics and Interpretation)

The dissertation presented focuses on initial stages of work of four selected poetesses that belong to the 20th century's era of the Seventies and the Eighties. The subject of analysis is the poetic work of Viera Prokešová, Dana Podracká, Anna Ondrejková and Mila Haugová. All of them debuted via the same publishing platform - a rubric and later via the literary supplement of periodical Nové Slovo during the time of the strictest normalization process. The dissertation is divided into three chapters with the first one aiming to explain literary and historical context of the period, which is taken into consideration in the process of research. The objective is to provide coherent and concise depiction of the problematic part of Slovak literary history that was formed by specific sociopolitical situation. It is this detailed knowledge of the context that clarifies a certain degree of paradox and at the same time a degree of specificity of the poetesses selected. Modern National Novel in Central Europe

in English The papers contain a finding of the national literature in between novels in the Central Europe at the age of modernism in 20s and 30s o 20th century. The idea definition of national novel in the literatures of Central Europe is difficult and complicated process. This papers work with literal texts as a part of national literature with polish novel Przedwiośnie by Stefan Zeromsky, hungarian novel Édes Anna by Deszo Kosztolanyi, slovakian novel Cesta životom by Ladislav Nádasi-Jégé, czech novel Osudy dobrého vojáka Švejka by Jaroslav Hašek and austrian novel Mann ohne Eingeschafen by Robert Musil. The finding is divided into two parts - first is finding of national novel - second is about national character. Both situations are actualized with new terms - novel of the nation and character of the nation. Both literary terms correspond to objects that are not directly denouncing the life of the nation, but produces its main ideas and identification. The slovakian and the hungarian novel focus on the struggle of individual characters with society and their new status. In the contrary to the austrian and the czech novel reveal the principle of applying national characteristics in literary philosophical swirl. "'Tis Alright to write about Slovakia like this as Well..." Jakub Deml's Image of the Slovakia in cultural-historical context

The topic of this thesis (as its subtitle says) deals with the cultural and historical context of Jakub Deml's Image of Slovakia. In the first part, the author attempts to find his "own way" to Jakub Deml. In the second part, "Šlépěje" from the "Czechoslovakian era" are interpreted, i.e. IV.- VIII. These fall into the time period after the establishment of the Czechoslovakian Republic, Deml's meeting with Pavla Kytlicová, and his eventual settlement in his native city of Tasov (1919- 21). The third part offers a brief sketch of the cultural and historical context of the Czech-Slovak relationship, later also perceived from the Central European perspective. The fourth part initially uses two different examples to introduce the Image of Slovakia in Czech literature (Němcová, Kálal), and afterwards it turns to the literary analysis of Jakub Deml's Image of Slovakia. In the concluding chapter, this piece is set into the cultural and historical context and compared to other authors.

The Slovak Question in Early Alexander Matuška's Works

Magdalena Bystrzak The "Slovak Question" in Early Alexander Matuška's Works ABSTRACT The presented thesis deals with the issue of the "Slovak question" in early Alexander Matuška's works of 1930s. The author has in mind that A. Matuška's attitude towards the Slovak question was shaped by his contacts with the Czech intellectual elite during his studies at the Charles University in Prague (1928-1934). She comes out of an assumption that the "Slovak question" has mainly a cultural character in early A. Matuška's works. In the first part of the thesis, the author tries to show the character of the discourse on the "Slovak question" in 1930s. By researching debates on the "Slovak question" in representative cultural journals of the time, the author tries to point out that the "Slovak question" debate was not only about the emancipation of a the Slovak nation, but also about the modernization of the Slovak society. A. Matuška's early works are interpreted as a part of this effort. Both the second and the third parts are devoted to those aspects of A. Slovak prose in German translation and its reception after 1968

The main topic of this MA thesis is a literary critical reflection of Slovak prose in German translations after 1968. The thesis focuses on cultural-literary reflections of Slovak prose in German linguistic context. The author analyses the reviews from German and Austrian linguistic area, while pointing out the differences in literary works in different (though close) linguistic contexts. The theoretical background of the thesis lies in imaginological theories and the author characterizes four basic perspectives of reading Slovak literature based on them. Her aim is to formulate an objective and complex image of the literary critical opinion on Slovak literature in the aforementioned areas. Inovation of rural prose in the work of Edward Redliński

This thesis is focused on the analysis of means and methods, by which Edward Redliński (representative of so called rural stream in polish literature in 1960' and 70') innovates and varies traditional concept of the rural novel genre. These means and methods are characterised through the interpretation of works Listy z Rabarbaru, Konopielka and Awans, the stories and novels containing rural themes. Main attention is paid to Redliński's original approach to classical rural novel and successive introduction of his specific variety, which is formed by the author. Also there is presented the way by which Edward Redliński varies traditional motives, or symbols used in rural literature. In the end of this thesis is author's innovative approach compared to the specifics of statements of other authors of so called rural stream.

The portrayal of a human body and it's bodiliness in the prose of Leopold Lahola

The thesis has analytical - interpretative nature and focuses on paradigmatic dealing with body and bodiliness motive in the prose of Slovak author Leopold Lahola. The subject of analysis is Lahola's prose collection - Posledná vec (The Last Thing). The thesis also overlaps comparatively to broader Central European context. Texts of Arnošt Lustig (Czech Republic), Imre Kertész (Hungary) and Henryk Grynberg (Poland) are reflected. The subject of comparison is the motive of body and bodiliness, means of expression, narrative point of view, and the concept of fable and sujet.
