The transformation of Czech film and its critics in the Film a doba journal (90s)
Fiala, Tomáš ; Štoll, Martin (advisor) ; Novotný, David Jan (referee)
The theme of the diploma thesis is the image of Czech film and its criticism in the post- revolutionary period. The view of Czech cinematography in the 1990s is showed by professional reflection in the magazine Film a doba, traditional periodical published since 1955. The analysis reflects the form of critical pieces and the state of Czech film under the influence of new possibilities and production conditions in 1990-1999. The development of Czech cinematography is illustrated in the theoretical part with the help of literature, essays and critics. The paper also finds an answer to the question of how domestic cinematography and its criticism used an opportunity for development and whether it was successful. The research also includes external influences such as the gradual development of multiplexis, the privatization of film studios and the interest in films by Czech viewers under the influence of foreign titles.
Causa Kajínek: the media reflection. From reality to the film processing.
Pavlisová, Veronika ; Novotný, David Jan (advisor) ; Štoll, Martin (referee)
This master thesis, entitled Causa Kajínek: media reflection. From reality to movie interpretation deals with the life story of murderer Jiří Kajínek, who was sentenced to life imprisonment. He served his punishment for the murder of an entrepreneur and his bodyguard from Plzeň, which took place in 1993. Kajínek was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1998. His case was then turned into the subject of a movie. The Czech movie called Kajínek, directed by Petr Jákl junior, premiered in cinemas in 2010. The master thesis focuses on this movie and examines published reviews from the Czech press and professional journals. The thesis also analyses the media presentation of the whole case, with special emphasis on the years 1993 (when the murders were committed), 1998 (the life imprisonment sentence for Kajínek) and 2000 (Kajínek's jailbreak from Mírov prison and subsequent capture). The aim of the thesis is to present conclusions about this case, which is still the subject of controversy and polemics about Kajínek's guilt or innocence.
Media presentment of the president Vaclav Klaus`s term on pages of Lidové noviny and Hospodářské noviny
Křapka, David ; Osvaldová, Barbora (advisor) ; Novotný, David Jan (referee)
The main goal of my thesis will be to find, how two significant dailies - Hospodářské noviny and Lidové noviny, reported about Václav Klaus's whole term. The thesis is based on the media theory like theory of gatekeeping or theory of agenda-setting and on the biography of Václav Klaus. There is a system of hypotheses that are asking questions which are needed for the study of stereotypes, for the following of the periodicity of titles with president's name on them, or for the meaning of the specific articles. For that I will be using Newton Media database. On the end of the thesis I should find out whether there is media bias towards Václav Klaus in his term. And I also hope that I would be able to evaluate objectivity of these studied dailies.
Case Radovan Krejčíř - from reality and newspaper/TV news to book and film cover and film critiqueíř
Pilek, Šimon ; Novotný, David Jan (advisor) ; Štoll, Martin (referee)
The main topic of dissertation named "Case Radovan Krejčíř - from reality and newspaper/TV news to book and film cover and film critique" is person of Radovan Krejčíř, one of the biggest Czech criminals in the history of the country. A controversial billionaire was caught up in many criminal cases already in nineties, and not only in Czech Republic. He escaped the country in the spring of 2005 because of the danger of arrest and then he got on with pursuits against the law in the Seychelles (2005 - 2007) and later on also in South Africa (2007 - 2013). In South Africa in 2013, he was arrested and subsequently sentenced to 35 years in prison. However, the case is not yet completely closed, because there are some other Krejčíř's South African cases, that the judge's decisions are still pending. Life story of Radovan Krejčíř inspired investigative journalist and publicist Jaroslav Kmenta to write book trilogy Padrino Krejčíř (African - 2014, Gangster - 2015 and Shark - 2016) and director Jan Pachl to make a two movies (Gangster Ka and Gangster Ka: African - both 2015). The goal of this dissertation was not just to bring the complete picture of the Krejčíř's criminal career as it was portrayed by the media, publicist Jaroslav Kmenta and director Jan Pachl - and how media critics reviewed book and film...
Watergate scandal and its film reflection: comparison on the example of the film All the President's Men
Hegedüš, Tomáš ; Šobr, Michal (advisor) ; Novotný, David Jan (referee)
This bachelor thesis compares real evolution of the Watergate affair with its film reflection, motion picture All the President's Men. The main thesis predicated that factual differences would be insignificant and distinctions would occur, especially in the deformation of time and character heroisation. During the description of the affair as the journalists saw it, I used descriptive method and captured the first five months of the affair. As the main source for this part, I used the book, All the President's Men. While I examined the partial aspects of the film, I used an analytical method and using theoretical film literature, I analyzed both narrative and mise en scéne as well as the film style. In a comprehensive comparison, I used a comparative method and at the end of the thesis, I mentioned other film adaptations related to the affair. After the comparison, I was able to confirm my main thesis. The adapted scenario faithfully captures the events in the book, and the essential differences have emerged in the disruption of the time line, the heroisation of the characters and in addition, the simplification. The contribution of this thesis also lies in the assessment of the importance of the journalistic couple, Woodward and Bernstein. I have shown that in the capturing of the affair, their...
