Coincidentia oppositorum in the work of Nicholas of Cusa De docta ignorantia
Buchta, Petr ; Karfíková, Lenka (advisor) ; Novák, Lukáš (referee)
The aim of this work is to examine the idea of coincidence of opposites (coincidenta oppositorum) in the work of Nicholas of Cusa On Learned Ignorance (De docta ignorantia). We will try to show that this idea is constitutive for the whole of De docta ignorantia which is composed of three books and that upon this idea is based a certain way of doing philosophy which purpose is to be completed by faith. We will use the edition of the Heidelberg Academy: Nicolai de Cusa Opera omnia iussu et auctoritate Academiae Litterarum Heidelbergensis (Hamburg 1932 - 2004).
A Comparison of Plotinus's and St. Augustine's Conception of Evil
Košová, Michaela ; Němec, Václav (advisor) ; Novák, Lukáš (referee)
This bachelor thesis is concerned with Plotinus's and Augustine's conception of evil and its main aim is to compare both views and reveal which Plotinus's thoughts inspired Augustine and at which points he had to divert from Plotinus. The key question is in what way both philosophers attempt to answer the question about ontological status and origin of evil. While examining the differences between both conceptions it will be importatnt to explain them with regard to different metaphysical concepts which constitute Plotinus's and Augustine's thinking. First part of the thesis investigates in what sense in Plotinus's theory matter - the last point of emanation of reality from the One - is the principle of evil. Later we encounter tolma, certain illegitimate audacity to become independent from the higher levels which is present in the soul and also at the very emergence of reality as such from the One. However, since soul has a divine origin, it cannot really sin. Plotinus ascribes the ultimate responsibility for evil to matter, utter privation and form of non-being, which can act as a sort of trap for the soul. In the second part we will see that thanks to neoplatonic thinking Augustine too perceives evil as privation but he ascribes its origin to a free decision of created, and thus mutable rational...
Lateral gene transfer and its utilisation for the phylogeny of eukaryotes
Novák, Lukáš ; Hampl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Čepička, Ivan (referee)
Lateral gene transfer is a relatively rare event in eukaryotes. Presence of a specific gene acquired by lateral transfer in multiple lineages can be therefore considered to be their common synapomorphy, defining them as a monophyletic group. In contrast to usual phylogenetic methods, this approach can potentially shed light even on the direction of evolution and therefore find the position of a root of a given group of organisms. In the first part of this work I discuss various aspects of lateral gene transfer utilisation in eukaryote phylogeny including advantages and disadvantages against common approaches. In the second part I present particular studies that have recently used this method. Key words: Lateral gene transfer, rare genomic changes, long branch attraction artefact, endosymbiosis, phylogeny, eukaryots, protists.
"Eastern theodicea" as an alternative treatment for the Western problem of evil
Šestáková Novotná, Kateřina ; Novák, Lukáš (advisor) ; Holba, Jiří (referee)
This essay responds to the dissatisfaction of some philosophers with traditional Western solutions to the problem of evil in religion and it offers an alternative solution, which is inspired by the Eastern philosophy of advaita to a great extent. According to the critics, traditional theodicies do not solve the following aspects of the problem of evil: problems with the extent and distribution of evil, suffering of animals and eternal damnation. Three elements of the Eastern philosophy combined with some traditional strategies do solve these problems. The first element is the idea of universal salvation, the second is the theory of karma nand reincarnation and the last one is advaita and lila. These elements can be accepted in various forms and combinations, some of which are more compatible with the traditional methods than others. The final solution is hypothetical and should be understood as a sketech of several ways in which the problem of evil can be solved. This essay is not merely an application of Eeastern concepts to a Western problem, but rather a mutual interaction. That is why I do not hesitate to work with Western new age literature and use Eastern concepts creatively myself. Even though my solution is based on the Indian philospohy of advaita, I criticize its usual implication, according to...
Richard Swinburne and the existence of God: contemporary analytic philosophy of religion
Kočnar, Ondřej ; Sousedík, Stanislav (advisor) ; Novák, Lukáš (referee)
In the first place this thesis is an analysis of the work by R. Swinburne The Existence of God. It introduces the reader into problems with which Swinburne is concerned here - that is the probability of the hypothesis of God's existence. The topic is viewed from a perspective which is close to contemporary Thomism.
On the origin of words (Freshwater Fish Labelling Etymology in the Czech Republic and European English-speaking countries)
Novák, Lukáš ; Řezníček, Jan (advisor) ; Rajchlová, Štěpánka (referee)
The thesis doesn't have the tendency or ambition to reach the particular conclusion or final solution (which would be at least as debatable as the construction that it is based on). But it should bring different approach and focus on selected animal genus (our distant ancestors), accepting them as a contemporary cultural, economical and culinary interest. Insight trough the prism of tendency, specifics and unwritten rules of linguistics, under the thumb of cultural representativneness and its identification. The contact of two distinc worlds, antithesises. The silent and peaceful world of fishes, that has retained the objectified prism of lucent wall under the water level, which singularises it from antropocentric world of "those", who think to stand on the top of imaginary pyramid. The work is divided in three parts: Introductory principles, etymological research and addendum, which interprets fish from the art, astronomy, folklore, and booklore point of view.
"Scire Deum esse". Scotus's proof of the existence of God a a genuine achievement of metaphysics understood as an Aristotelian science
