The Role of Czech-Slovak Translation in the Relationship between the two NationsBohemization - Slovakization - Rewriting - Transfer - Translation

The present thesis focuses on understanding the nature of the Czech-Slovak relationship viewed through the lens of translation between the two nations. The thesis follows the history of Czech-Slovak and Slovak-Czech translations: it begins with the earliest signs of Czech- Slovak translation (turn of the 16th and 17th century), continues with the establishment of the standard Slovak language and the first Slovak-Czech translations (at that time, the purpose of the translation was to mask the Slovak origin of a literary work), and concludes with the era of the first Czechoslovak Republic, which strongly affected the Czech-Slovak and Slovak- Czech translations by creating the construct of the Czechoslovak language. The second part of this thesis presents the case study examining the play Maryša written by the Mrštík Brothers and its translation into Slovak by multiple translators. The analysis of several translations of this play exemplifies how an extensive research of this kind of translation of the same literary work by multiple translators reveals in-depth and subtle aspects of the Czech-Slovak relationship, details about the history, and the presence of both languages in Czech and Slovak. Comparative analysis of modification process of noun derivatives in Polish and Czech

The aim of the bachelor thesis is a linguistic comparison of modifying derivatives of nouns in Polish and Czech. The subject of my interest will be four word-forming categories, i.e nomina feminativa, nomina deminutiva, nomina augmentativa and nomina juvenium. On the basis of the attached literature and corpuses of the Czech and Polish languages, an analysis of the process of noun formation of individual categories will be performed. The thesis will also focus on the way alternations and irregularities occur in both languages and subsequently on the frequency of modifying derivatives and the role of their occurrence in contemporary Czech and Polish languages. Overall, the work will focus on the comparison of the described processes in both languages with an emphasis on the similarities and differences between the mentioned languages.

Slovak among Slavic languages (the question of Slovak - South Slavic lexical correspondences)

BA thesis "Slovak amongst Slavonic Languages (On the Question of Slovak - South Slavonic lexical correspondences)" deals with correspondences between Slovak as West Slavonic language and South Slavonic languages. In the first part, opinions about the origin of Slovak are summarized (Theories about homogenous or heterogeneous origin of Slovak and the migration-integration theory), which introduce specifics of central Slovak, which is the basis for standard Slovak, and put them into context with Non-West-Slavonic languages. Then an overview of studies dedicated to issues of Slovak - South Slavonic lexical correspondences, which is less researched than phonetic-morphologic correspondences, follows. The main part of the thesis is the analysis of material from Slavonic language atlas (OLA), which is an important project of Slavonic linguistic geography focused on Slavonic dialectal differentiation. The aim of this thesis was to show the range and character of Slovak - South Slavic language equivalence on the material of the 9th volume of OLA, which focuses on thematic area of Man. Slovak-Czech interlingual homonymy - lexical analysis on the base of Slovak-Czech dictionary (U-Ž)

The subject of the thesis is the interlingual homonymy between Slovak and Czech, which is a topic that has been paid little attention by the Slovak and Czech linguistics. The fundamental part of the thesis is represented by a mirror dictionary of Slovak and Czech interlingual homonyms, based on The Slovak- Czech dictionary ranging from the letter U to Ž. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first, theoretical part is concentrated more generally on the lexicology and the theory of homonymy, interlingual homonymy, and other paradigmatical relations between lexical units. The second, lexical part is devoted to the principles of making a dictionary; next, it analyses some of the phenomenons that showed up as problematic while making the mirror dictionary of the Slovak- Czech interlingual homonyms.

Trilingual Bratislava: A Sociolinguistic View

The M.A. thesis approaches the trilingual language situation of Bratislava via example of four case studies of old trilingual Bratislava inhabitants. The first chapter introduces the historical context of old Bratislava; it is an extended introduction to the city issues, its ethnicities and languages. The second chapter processes respondents' language biographies with regard to language acquisition, contemporary language use and transferring languages to the next generations. The third chapter is close analysis of code- switching in respondents' speeches. The fourth chapter concentrates on language ideologies connected to individual Bratislava languages and ethnicities. The last chapter describes the components of collective and individual memory of respondents, such as mental map of the city (emerging through speaking about the city promenade, confectioneries and also celebrations) and repeated stories connected to languages. The thesis contributes to the discourse about (not only) language identity of Bratislava and approaches the use of specific sociolect of the city's older generation of indigenous inhabitants.

Bilingualism and language management in Czech minority in Croatia

This thesis attends to the issue of a Czech minority in Croatia, local bilingualism and language management on various levels: from the level of an individual, over the level of the entire Czech minority living there and local government, up to the state level and its laws. In the first chapter I have summarized the history of Czech migration to the territory of today's Croatia, mainly during the 19th century, and their gradual organization after they found themselves located out of their home country when the Austria-Hungary dismembered. The second chapter describes current situation in the minority - its organizational structure, cultural life, school system and its information and publishing activities. The safeguard of its existence by law and constitution is also of importance. The third chapter dedicates to the language situation in the Czech minority in Croatia: Czech-croatian and Croatian-czech bilingualism, differentness in dialectological origin of the language, language as a system and factors that influence both, the language and its users. Lexikal Turkisms in Slovak and Polish

This diploma paper deals with the problem of Turkisms in Slovak and Polish. The starting point is the conceptual and terminological definition of borrowed lexis from Turkic languages. Thesis is focusing on the issue of the appellative and proprial lexis and partly on the phraseology, which is associated with Turkisms; on the question of current status of particular borrowed lexemes; on the measure of their integration in the lexicon of Slovak and Polish on the basis of the semantic and derivative criterion (the range of domestic word-formative nests derived from Turkism as wordformative base and the question of developed domestic meanings) in comparative perspective.

Dictionary of Croatian-Belarussian interlingual homonyms

The thesis deals with interlingual lexical homonymy in the Croatian and Belarusian languages. The core of the thesis is a Croatian-Belarusian dictionary of homonyms. The preceding, theoretical part focuses first on the denomination of the linguistic phenomenon of interlingual homonymy and on the existing research in the sphere of homonymy among the Slavic languages. A following section of the thesis is devoted to the various types of intralingual and interlingual homonyms and to some differences in their classification. The thesis also looks at the ways in which interlingual homonyms originate, in relation to the origin of the lexical units that make pairs of homonyms. Two principal ways in which pairs of homonyms can originate are described: coincidental formal agreement and agreement as a result of common development or of the borrowing of the same foreign word. Depending on their origin, homonyms are divided into pairs representing the common Slavic lexical stock and pairs of foreign origin. Lexical aspects of Czech-Slovak langugage relations in the period of National Revival

The thesis focuses on the issue of Czech-Slovak language relations in the period of the National Revival, with a concentration on the lexical similarities and differences and the projection of the language contact in texts and lexicographical works in the Czech environment. The core of the thesis is the cultural and social context of the works of Vilém Dušan Lambl, conditions of the genesis and analysis of his Short Slovak dictionary, published in 1848 in the Journal of the Czech Museum. Lambl's dictionary, which has not been paid any special linguistic attention yet, is one of the first lexicographic attempts of Slovak and Czech lexical confrontation. The phenomenon of the Slovak bibliotheca in Czech reader's environment - by the example of Hoffmann's family

This Bachelor's thesis concentrates on the representation of Slovak literature in Czech environment and points to its various modules of functioning. It builds on the personal library of Doctor Bohuslav Hoffmann, which was donated by him and his wife, Professor Jana Hoffmann to the Department of Central European Studies at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University. In its original state, the collection consisted of many publications by Slovak authors - both fiction and specialized. The thesis aims to focus on different issues related to the character of the presented library, such as panoramic overview of the donation, representation of reading culture in the Czech cultural environment or specific approaches to book editions, and partially focuses on the Czech-Slovak and Slovak-Czech relations within this field. The different perspective on the topic is offered by the interview with Bohuslav Hoffmann and Jana Hoffmann, who shared their personal experience and opinions on Slovak literature in Czech Republic.
