Interventional methods for improving cognitive performance in case of children with ADHD

The thesis describes cognitive abilities and attention of children and adolescents with ADHD. It deals with therapeutic and intervention strategies that can be used to reduce symptomes of the disease and to improve cognitive performance of people with the diagnosis. The theoretical part of the thesis summarizes findings about attention and the structure of cognitive abilities of people with ADHD. A separate chapter lists intervention approaches used in the context of the diagnosis, such as pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and also different kinds of alternative approaches (relaxation, exercises, food complements, compensatory tools etc.). In the empirical part we examine a specific intervention, use of earplugs to eliminate the background noise, can improve the cognitive performance of children with ADHD. The research involved fourteen children with the diagnosis of ADHD. The CAS 2 assessment battery was used to measure their cognitive skills. The statistical analysis confirmed the difference between the cognitive profile of children with ADHD and normal population in executive functioning without working memory. When using the earplugs children with ADHD had better results in the overall score and on the planning scale and successive processes scale. Keywords: Attention, ADHD, therapy of ADHD, earplugs.
The Effect of individualized teaching on selected aspects of cognition and motivation

The aim of this thesis is to examine the effects of indvidualized teaching on selected aspects of cognition and motivation. Research issues focus on changes in cognitive and executive functions, clients' attitude to tutored subjects, the difference between the attitude of clients to tutoring and school education and changes in length of clients' preparation for school lessons and changes in school results. The research sample consisted of 8 clients aged 14-18 who were involved in the individual tutoring programme. The applied methods were interview and the CAS2, assessment battery. The most important findings of the research include improvement in the performance of executive functions and increased perceived entertainment of school subjects. Compared to school education, tutoring was considered more useful, especially the individual and friendly approach of lecturers was evaluated more positively than teachers' approach. School results improved by at least one grade for all clients in at least one tutored subject.
Mediation learning experience within parents - children interactions

This thesis presents a draft of a diagnostic tool, intented to use to analyze mediated learning experience ("MLE") in the interactions of parents and school aged children. The first chapter deals with historical roots of MLE and theoretical concepts, which inspired Reuver Feuerstein, author of MLE. Next chapters of the thesis are giving insight to MLE parameters and connecting the parameters to the contemporary knowledge from psychological practice. The thesis is also focused on MISC approach, created by Pnina Klein, which hasn't been described yet in the czech psychological literature, even though it is based on MLE and it is commonly used in foreign research and interventional programmes. The thesis describes the structure of MLE and possibilities of it's uses. At the end of the theoretical part of the thesis, methods, based on MLE theory, used in the Czech republic, are described. Contemporary methods of analyzing interactions of parents and children are also mentioned. Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague, Department of Psychology Richard Lukáš Psychology students' attitudes towards adoption of children by same-sex couples (Master Thesis) Consultant: PhDr. Lenka Krejčová, Ph.D. Praha 2018 Abstract: Same-sex parenting (homoparentality) is new, yet still not well explored phenomena in Czech Republic. Purpose of this study is to explore the attitudes of Czech psychology students (N=337) to homoparentality. The vignettes, i.e. model stories describing the situation of a couple preparing to adopt a child, were used. The sexual orientation of the couple and child's gender varied. After reading one of the six versions of the vignette, participants assessed the parental competences and child's future development after adoption. The factor analysis of dependent variables was performed with 8 scales as a result. Independent variables were traditional and modern homophobia, beliefs about etiology of homosexuality, gender roles attitudes etc. Results indicate that students view homoparentality rather positively. However, the homoparental and heteroparental families were rated differently. Department: Department of Psychology Abstract: This dissertation thesis deals with the concept of academic self-efficacy. The aim of this study was to develop a research tool for assessing high school students` academic self-efficacy, which is not yet available in the Czech environment. The theoretical part is based on a more general level of self-efficacy and further focuses on the specific characteristics of academic self- efficacy and ways of measuring it. The empirical part deals with the development of the questionnaire, with verification of its psychometric characteristics and finding out the relationship with other variables. The research sample consists of 1717 high school students from all regions of the Czech Republic. The research included secondary vocational schools and grammar schools. Students filled in the questionnaire for Czech language and for mathematics. The final research tool is highly reliable and also its validity has been verified. High School Teachers' Teaching Styles and Possibilities of Their Detection

For the needs of research and measurement in pedagogical-psychological practice, different categories of approaches are constructed as to grasp the teacher's interaction and interaction in the educational context. The presented work approaches the understanding of characteristics of student and high school teacher interaction through the prism of educational styles. The aim of the theoretical part is to define and map various approaches and models of educational styles, to present essential characteristics and their importance in the educational process. After defining approaches, work is being developed to identify educational styles. The design of a quantitative research project is aimed at identifying high school teachers education styles through the QTI (Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction). The mapping project is aimed at investigating the real impact of teachers on the basis of their self-reflection and reflection of students through a questionnaire survey. At the same time, the project aims to submit the obtained data to a comparison of both views of the participants in the educational process. The Impact of Academic Debate on Critical Thinking Development of Adolescents

Cognitive abilities in the age of adolescence reach a high standard. Critical thinking, an ability of each young individual, offers possible solutions for everyday situations as well as for complex tasks requiring an intellectual engagement. It is crucial to find new ways to support and further develop critical thinking of adolescents. The theoretical section is divided into three subsections. The first of them is based on a specification of the period of adolescence mainly focusing on the cognitive development. The second section is dedicated to critical thinking and in the last section, the academic debate as a method of education is presented. The core of this thesis is to examine the influence of debating on the development of critical thinking of adolescents. The empirical section describes a survey conducted as a part of an international survey project Evaluations. The theoretical baseline has determined three specific tasks to evaluate the gathered data. In these tasks, three groups of participants are observed and compared - debaters beginners, advanced debaters and non-debaters. The Theory of Mediated Learning Experience in Research and Practical Application

This bachelor thesis focuses on the Mediated Learning Experience theory (MLE). The main goal of this thesis is to map various areas of research and practice, where the MLE theory is used. Firstly, the literary review presents basic information on R. Feuerstein's approach and defines the Mediated Learning Experience. Furthermore, these theoretical findings are supplemented by neurocogotnive and neuroscientific results. Following chapters consider different potential applications of the Mediated Learning Experience theory, especially for the groups of culturaly depressed, then MLE in the family context, between the peers and also in the education. The research has shown that there is an absence of scientific evidence on MLE in a teacher-pupil relationship. The aim of the second part of the thesis is to investigate the influence of the MLE on the relationship between teacher and pupil from the persepctive of the pupil, as this has not yet been considered. For this purpose a quantitave research project based on an observation of the level of mediation used by the teacher and on a questionner that evaluates teacher-pupil relation has been proposed. Self-efficacy in transition from elementary school to high school

This diploma thesis focuses on changes of academic self-efficacy at the time of transition to high school, as well as students' expectation about this transition. Academic self-efficacy is one of the main predictors of school success, also affecting emotional experience and aspira- tional level of pupils. There were two groups of participants that were tested before the transition in April (N=321) and then after the transition in September and November (N = 169). To measure self-efficacy, Myself as a learner scale and Child's self-efficacy scale were used. We also used the Emotions connected with change inventory to measure the expectation of transition to high school. The results confirmed the relationship between academic self-efficacy and school grades. Contrary to expectations, a positive perception of change by pupils during this transition was demonstrated. The most important area for adolescents are their future classmates. The self-efficacy decline during the transition to high school has not been confirmed, while girls have a higher level of self-efficacy than boys. Students of grammar schools have a signifi- cantly higher degree of self-efficacy than secondary technical school students. Verification of selected subtests of Woodcock - Johnson assessment battery in the Czech conditions

The Woodcock-Johnson 4th Edition Test Battery is the latest version of assessment battery which measures cognitive function in childhood and adulthood. This is a very large test battery and the adaptation of the Czech version of this method is in progress. However, some subtests are closely related to the language and cultural habits of a country. The aim of this diploma thesis is to examine selected verbal tests of the Woodcock-Johnson assessment battery in the Czech environment. Specifically if these subtests do not disadvantage children who are from other language environment than Czech. The theoretical part of the thesis speaks about the concept of bilingualism (definition, categorisation) and how bilingualism is reflected in the results of cognitive tests. It also introduces the theory of CHC, which was the basis for the creation of the Woodcock- Johnson assessment battery. It analyses verbal subtests of the Woodcock-Johnson test battery, fourth edition, in more details. The research study focuses on comparison of the results of two groups of children. The groups are divided according to the language environment from which the tested children come from: either Czech or Russian-Czech.
