Pilot validation of special scale Schizophrenia Proneness in czech version of MMPI-2 for detection of the psychotic spectrum disorders
Slezáková, Klára ; Michalec, Jiří (advisor) ; Bezdíček, Ondřej (referee)
This Master's thesis is a pilot validation study of the Schizophrenia Proneness scale (SzP; Bolinskey et al., 2001), a special scale that was additionally derived from MMPI-2 items to predict an increased tendency to develop schizophrenia and schizophrenia-related illnesses in the future. Despite the previous promising results, further validation of the scale's properties is needed, including validation in a sample of patients who are already in the acute phase of their illness (Nichols & Crowhurst, 2006). The aim of this thesis is to describe the scale and pilot validate it in a sample of just these patients. The literature review section is divided into three chapters describing: schizophrenia and the possibilities of predicting schizophrenia and psychosis; the MMPI-2 psychodiagnostic method and the specifics of its use in an inpatient psychiatric ward; and the SzP scale, its development and properties. The aim of the research is to pilot test the validity of the SzP scale in the Czech environment by comparing the results of patients with psychotic versus non-psychotic type of difficulties. The research sample consisted of 312 patients. The Student's t-test for independent samples found no statistically significant difference between the groups of patients. On this basis, it was not proceeded to...
Validation of Goldberg index in czech version of MMPI-2 for detection of the psychotic spectrum disorders
Kraupnerová, Julie ; Michalec, Jiří (advisor) ; Kaplan, Cyril (referee)
This master's theses is a validation study that aims to verify the ability of Goldberg index to discriminate between psychiatric patients with either psychotic or nonpsychotic mental health disorders. There were 374 patients included in this study after selecting valid MMPI-2 profiles based on validity criteria specific for the clinical population. Goldberg index's ability to discriminate patients was analyzed using the ROC curve and independent samples t-test. Results show very weak ability to discriminate between patients close to the classification by chance (AUC = 0.668). Means of the psychotic and nonpsychotic group are significantly different but only with moderate effect size (Cohenovo d =-.576, p<.001). The optimal cut-off as a combination of highest sensitivity and specificity for Goldberg index was 48. Screening and diagnostic cut-offs were also explored. Since Goldberg index shows very weak ability to discriminate between psychotic and nonpsychotic patients generating too many false positives and false negatives, it is not possible to support the use of this parameter in clinical and diagnostic practise. Presented study is the first one to validate Goldberg index on any population, czech or otherwise. Key words: mmpi-2; goldberg index; psychotic disorders;
Coping Strategies and Burnout in Family Caregivers of People with Mental Illness
Suchánková, Eliška ; Harsa, Pavel (advisor) ; Michalec, Jiří (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on relationship between burnout and coping strategies in family caregivers of people with mental illness in diagnostic category F20-F29 in ICD- 10. The literature section of thesis briefly describes the family member in the context of this thesis, describes the diagnostic category in terms of symptoms and the course of a mental illness and options for psychoeducation for family caregivers in Czech Republic. The theoretical part focuses in detail on stress and related mental states of family caregivers, especially on burnout syndrome and its correlates. This follows up with chapter on the current state of knowledge of family caregiver's coping, which mainly emphasizes the correlates of coping strategies. The research part has a quantitative character and its main goal is to explore the relationship between burnout syndrome and coping strategies. The second goal is to report the most common coping strategies and the level of burnout syndrome to help describe the sample of family caregivers of people with mental illness. There was found statistically significant positive correlation between burnout syndrome and negative coping strategies. The results of analysis were further discussed with the results of the studies mentioned in the theoretical part together with the...
The effects of psilocybin assisted therapy on analytical rumination.
Vykoukal, Max ; Janošková, Marcela (advisor) ; Michalec, Jiří (referee)
Psilocybin is a psychedelic substance that shows affinity to serotonin 5HT2A receptors. It induces profound changes in everyday consciousness, including mystical-like experiences. Due to its properties, psilocybin has shown therapeutic potential for the treatment of various clinical disorders, especially treatment resistant depression. One of the factors that influence the onset and duration of depression are ruminations, i.e., our tendency to rigidly dwell upon the self and personal problems. Analytical rumination is a productive feature of this process in which an individual reflects upon the causes and potential solution to his/her problems. If uninterrupted and successful, analytical rumination can lead to increases in one's wellbeing. No studies have given attention to the relationship between psilocybin and analytical rumination. For that reason, the present thesis examined the effects of the compound on this process in 16 healthy participants. The data was provided by the Czech National institute of Mental Health (NIMH CZ). It was found that psilocybin bears no statistically significant effect on analytical rumination, although taken face value, the results appear to suggest that psilocybin may lead to a decrease in this form of cognition. In order to avoid a Type II error, future studies...
Phenomenology of the subjective experience of schizophrenia and its cultural conditionality
Hatráková, Viktória ; Pavelková, Michaela (advisor) ; Michalec, Jiří (referee)
The primary aim of the thesis is a first step towards the phenomenology of the psychotic experience accompanying schizophrenia across different cultures. The research proposal presented in this thesis has not yet been carried out, and the design of its future implementation consists of two complementary methods. The first, quantitative method will be the Questionnaire for Psychotic Experiences, which will firstly detect and assess the presence, severity and basic phenomenality of hallucinations and delusions. This method will be followed up by a second, qualitative analysis consisting of semi-structured interviews enabling a more detailed, in-depth exploration of specific phenomena of the experience, where cultural patterns might be detected. For the means, Interpretative phenomenological analysis has been suggested. The most accurate description of the approach chosen throughout both methods of the research is heterophenomenological, given that the individuals' beliefs about their experience is what will be of interest primarily. The theoretical framework underpinning the research proposal, from which the literary-overview part consists of, is based primarily on selected computational, information-processing theories focusing on consciousness, and interpretive- anthropological theories with their...
Impacts of a state of emergency on the life quality of theater actors
Vodičková, Denisa ; Loneková, Katarína (advisor) ; Michalec, Jiří (referee)
The diploma thesis is mainly devoted to the quality of life of theater workers during the period of two new states in the Czech Republic in the spring and winter of 2020-2021. The aim of this work is to map the experiences of theater actors and to gain a deeper understanding of their experiences with the closing of theaters. We are also interested in what helps theater actors during this period and whether and how they perceived the differences in their experiences in the first and second state of emergency. The theoretical part of the work is divided into four chapters. The first chapter is briefly devoted to terminological definition, the next chapter is focused on crises, extraordinary events and related topics, the third chapter is dedicated to the quality of life with a focus on the quality of life during the covid-19 pandemic here and abroad. The last chapter is focused on theater, the actor's personality and the specifics of theater work. The theoretical part is followed by an empirical part with qualitative methodologies. To fulfill the research objective, we used interpretive phenomenological analysis as a research method. The research is conducted as a series of semi-structured interviews with twelve theater actors and actresses.
The effect of hospitalization and morning patient community with basic mindfulness practice on emotional experiencing and occurrence of emotional regulation strategies
Kubrický, Richard ; Světlák, Miroslav (advisor) ; Michalec, Jiří (referee)
The aim of this thesis was to theoretically describe and empirically test the relations between different types of emotion-regulation strategies (according to the Intelligence And Development Scales, IDS), the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), the Emotional Experiencing Questionnaire as measured by the DEP36 and The Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale Short Form (DERS-SF). In addition, the aim was to examine possible changes in the amount of emotion regulation strategies and the trend in emotional experiencing during hospitalization with a mindfulness-focused community. The final aim was to empirically test the immediate effect of a given community on current emotional state. This is a mixed-methods research design. The qualitative part of the data was processed using deductive content analysis to quantify emotion regulation strategies. The IDS coding scheme was used for quantification. Quantitative data analysis was performed using correlation analysis, goodness- of-fit test, and growth curve analysis. Correlation analysis revealed several small to moderate relationships across emotion regulation strategies (ERS). Adaptive ERS showed positive relationships with positive emotional experiencing, maladaptive and other ERS showed positive relationships with difficulties in emotion...
Borderline personality disorder in the conception of psychoanalytic theories according to Margaret Mahler and Otto Kernberg
Zima, Matyáš ; Niederlová, Markéta (advisor) ; Michalec, Jiří (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the connections between borderline personality disorder and selected psychoanalytic theories. First, the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder is introduced. Furthermore, its basic characteristics, various etiological models and possibilities of psychodiagnostics, including its difficulties, are defined. In the next part, this disorder is put into the context of psychoanalytic theories. The theory of the separation-individuation process according to Margaret Mahler is elaborated in detail here. Furthermore, the work approaches the concept of borderline personality disorder according to Otto Kernberg, which is based on the concept of object relations. A correlation study is presented in the research project proposal. It aims to verify the existence of a relationship between borderline personality disorder and the aforementioned psychoanalytic theories. Data for the study will be obtained through a test battery consisting of modified PSSI, SII and BORRTI questionnaires. The research sample will consist of people diagnosed with borderline personality disorder from various specialized facilities designed for its treatment. The proposed study may lead to an expansion of psychodiagnostic options for people with this disorder. At the same time, it can attract the...
Self-attribution in Schizophrenia
Kozáková, Eva ; Kulišťák, Petr (advisor) ; Michalec, Jiří (referee) ; Drozdová, Kristýna (referee)
Background: Schizophrenia is a mental disorder with highly variable clinical presentation. It has been proposed that the unifying characteristic across all its variants is a disturbance of self/other boundaries and distinction. However, the understanding of its mechanism is still emerging. The presented thesis examines the hallmark feature of altered self-attribution of agency (SA) in schizophrenia with the aim to depict the underlying and related processes. Objectives: The experimental part consists of three separate studies. The first study verifies whether SA alterations reported in the literature are not confounded by an impairment of broader sensorimotor capacities. Further, it focuses on the association between SA alterations in schizophrenia and symptom severity and their dependence in time. The second study examines the differences in brain activity between patients and healthy controls during SA processing. The last study investigates the possible role of intrinsic brain connectivity in self-agency processing. Methods: The studies combine data from the levels of clinical presentation (symptoms), behavioral performance, and brain activity. More than 300 participants were involved in the studies in total. We used a behavioral SA task and a control task; the Positive and Negative Syndrome...
Contribution to Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia
Michalec, Jiří ; Harsa, Pavel (advisor) ; Ptáček, Radek (referee) ; Marková, Hana (referee)
In majority of schizophrenia patients, from the first episode of psychosis throughout the entire span of the illness, a cognitive deficit is one of the core symptoms. Assessing cognitive performance with empirically based methods is a vital part of clinical practice. Until recently, Czech adaptations of the MATRICS battery (standardly used for assessing cognition in schizophrenia worldwide) and the Tower of London, ToL (a basic test measure of executive planning ability) were absent. The primary aim of this dissertation thesis was to provide these methods for research and clinical use in Czech professional environment. This goal was achieved with both ToL and MATRICS in two basic steps. Firstly, Czech adaptations of both tests were carried out, namely translation of test instructions and establishment of standard administration and scoring. Secondly, complex psychometric analyses were conducted for both tests, including validation of their Czech versions for the purpose of assessing cognitive impairment in schizophrenia. The results suggest that ToL is a suitable tool for recognising executive planning deficit in general as well as in schizophrenia patients specifically. Also, the planning ability in schizophrenia patients, as measured by ToL, is one standard deviation below average when compared...
