Folk Culture in Gabriela Preissová's Collection of Short Stories Obrázky ze Slovácka
Belinová, Eliška ; Vaněk, Václav (advisor) ; Merhaut, Luboš (referee)
The presented thesis explores the representation of the traditional folk culture in Gabriela Preissová's three-part collection of short stories Obrázky ze Slovácka ("Short Stories from Moravian Slovakia", 1886, 1886 and 1889). The work is interpreted in the context of the Czech ethnographic movement, in which ethnologists, writers, painters, sculptors, photographers, composers as well as the general public were involved. The commentary on the stories deals gradually with material, spiritual and social culture, and folklore. It delineates the key phenomena (clothing, food, Christian and folk religiosity, social norms in young people's love, time, verbal and musical art), analyses the manner and degree of their integration into the literary text and their function in the story, text, and narration. Increased attention is paid to the confrontation between the village and town. The relation between folk culture and literature is conceived as interdiscursive, as a contact and interaction of two distinct sign systems.

Feminism and Literary Criticism in Pavla Moudrá's Journalism
Słowik, Olga ; Heczková, Libuše (advisor) ; Merhaut, Luboš (referee)
The thesis concentrates on the literary and feminist articles of Pavla Moudrá, which she published in the journals Ženská revue, Ženské listy, Ženský obzor and Ženský svět. An important part of the diploma is a complete bibliography of her texts issued in these periodicals. The analysis concentrates then mainly on articles connected to literature and "the woman question". It describes the author's opinions in their relationship with the peace movement, animal welfare, the anti-alcoholic movement and spiritualism. In all of these areas, she was involved as a promoter of spiritual values, leading to the spiritual revival of mankind, and for this purpose she also subordinated her journalism. She tried to thematise particular social problems, indicative of the decline of human morality, as well as writing more general texts, more metaphorical and strongly inspired by the theosophical movement. It influenced the way she perceived literature: she valued mainly the author's intention, which should be able to offer a positive example for the reader. She considered a poet, meaning a writer and an artist in general, to be a creature standing close to God and having the ability to see more than the average person. The reception of antiquity in the poetry of Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic (in comparison with Stanislav Kostka Neumann)
Sirovátka, Štěpán ; Vojvodík, Josef (advisor) ; Merhaut, Luboš (referee)
The end of the nineteenth century is in European art clearly marked with the return to antiquity. This work deals with the reception and reevaluation of the ancient tradition within the poetic work of Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic and Stanislav Kostka Neumann. The early, decadent, period of Karásek's work is characterized as a Daedalic-Dionysian model, Neumann's decadent poetry as a Dionysian-Daedalic model and the second period of Karásek's work, marked with a classicizing tendency, as an Apollonian model. These models of reception are considered complementary. As an interpretation clue to all three models the author has chosen Hocke's and Curtius' theory of a Great Mannerism, i. e. changing of manneristic and classic periods in European cultural history, and Nietzsche's dichotomy of classical antiquity as a combination of Dionysian and Apollonian element. The neomanneristic interpretation of Karásek's work is supported by the interpretation of the decadent poetics as a new gnosis, although peculiarly reciped. Therefore, in this case, reception of antiquity may be viewed very broadly as a search for a common root, a cultural or anthropological constant extending through history; not strictly as a plain reception of ancient motifs.
