Masaryk Academy of Labour and defence of the state

Efforts of the first Czechoslovak technical academy to participate in the army precautions of the state were concerned besides organization and help in the preparation for state defence also in the possibility to apply the preparation in the university education. Nevertheless, the Commission for the Interaction of Technicians at the Country Defence founded by the Masaryk Academy of Labour in 1920s did not succeeded to enforce enough from various reasons, and it was after longer passivity finally abolished about 1939.

Czechoslovak/Mongolian archeology expedition in 1958 was the first action on its extend in CSR at all. Institute of Archeology Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences sent to Mongolia high experts at the head of L. Jisl, who executed besides the excavations also ethnographic palaeogic and anthropological research. Results were very high appreciated by inland as well as external experts and it confirmed the prestige of Czechoslovak science. The pursuit of expedition by next years was grounded by organizations barriers.

During the whole 20th century there were 5 or 6 central scholar institutions in the Czech lands. Their members were elected, and the membership represented the highest acknowledgment of research abilities and importance of the person for her/his discipline. Women were, however, elected only very rarely; only four local scholars (and two foreign) became members in the first half of the century, followed by eleven ones in the second part. The article maps possibilities and conditions of the elections influenced obviously above all by the very beginnings of women scholars, pioneers in the world of science and humanities in the first fifty years, by the totalitarian regime and by the existence of the unique, really centralized institution from 1950s. Small portraits of all women and circumstances of their elections together with the description of the situation regarding women in research in the end of the 20th and in beginning of the 21th century are included.
