Usage of recycled material in asphalt surface layers

Diploma thesis deals with adding R - material to the wearing asphalt courses, specifically to the SMA 11S. It has two parts – theoretical and practical. The theoretical part describes using R - material in the recycling of roads, different types of recycling and how is this problem handled in the Czech Republic, the practical part deals with the design of three kinds of asphalt mixtures with different added ratios of R – material, describing empirical and functional tests on the bitumen binder and the designed asphalt mixtures and the results of those tests.

English Idioms of Comparison in Corpus Data

This thesis presents a corpus-based investigation that focuses on adjectival similes. As similes are often overshadowed by metaphors, the existing research on similes using empirical evidence is relatively scarce. The presented work provides a complex account of adjectival similes in corpora using data from multiple heterogeneous sources. The methodology for mining adjectival similes from corpora is thoroughly described, along with the associated pitfalls. As every corpus requires a different approach, the CQL query designs are presented individually for each researched corpus. The corpus-based mining yielded a list of 309 unique adjectival similes. The obtained data are subjected to meticulous scrutiny in the form of both formal and content analyses. Following a statistical overview of the data collected from each corpus, the 60 most frequent similes are presented in detail, including their meanings and functions, typical targets, related similes, and frequencies. These similes are then searched in respected online dictionaries, and the findings suggest that dictionaries struggle to keep up with corpus evidence. Linguistic complexity of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series

This bachelor thesis examines the language complexity in the initial and final volumes of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, testing the hypothesis that the novels' linguistic features, impacting readability, are adjusted to the intended readers' evolving comprehension and reading skills. As the series progresses, the complexity is expected to increase, reflecting the maturation of its audience. The research investigates whether the series' later novels are syntactically and lexically more complex than the earlier ones, with the help of employing corpus stylistic methodology. The theoretical part of this thesis outlines the definition of linguistic complexity and its relation to readability and discusses various methods of analyzing literature from a linguistic perspective. The complexity is measured using various criteria: the number of tokens, types, chapters, sentences, the extent and types of clausal subordination and non-finite clauses. Sentence length and type-token ratio are also considered. The methods include frequency lists and keyword analysis, complemented by a detailed examination of text samples. From victory to crisis: The transformation of the media framing of Petr Fiala's government in the Echo Weekly and in opinion texts on the Echo24 website

This diploma thesis deals with the framing of topics in the Echo Weekly and in the opinion section of the Echo24 website. It tries to record how tribal authors evaluated the activities of Petr Fiala's government during one year against the background of fundamental social changes due to the post-pandemic situation, the outbreak of the war in Ukraine and the economic and energy crisis. The research works with framework analysis using the deductive method, which is based on the search for already defined frameworks. It is a typology of frameworks described in earlier researches as the most frequently used. These are frameworks of responsibility, conflict, economic consequences, morality and the human interest. Searching for them and then analyzing the frames will make it possible to determine which arguments the authors used most often and how they presented the events to the readers. Research questions are set, namely, how the frequency of texts mentioning the government has changed since its appointment over a period of one year, how the frames used have changed during the year and which of them had the greatest representation, and how the authors have changed their arguments regarding the government's activities. Direct speech and characterization in J. R. R. Tolkiens' novels

This bachelor thesis explores the impact of direct speech on the overall characterization of a literary character and the distinctive linguistic means employed to achieve this. The thesis examines direct speech of two characters in the trilogy The Lord of the Rings - Aragorn and Sam. Their speech has been manually excerpted from the whole body of the trilogy in electronic form and analyzed using corpus linguistic tools and methods. The theoretical part of this thesis describes the function and formation of direct speech, as well as its potential paraphrasing forms. Moreover, the distinctive linguistic features within The Lord of the Rings are described on the level of typical key words along with syntax. The practical part analyses direct speech of the selected characters on the basis of a qualitative analysis of keywords and their collocations. KEYWORDS J. R. Multiple negation in present-day spoken British English

This thesis examines the occurrence and the expression of double (or multiple) negation within a single utterance, as used in contemporary spoken British English. It aims to describe the various combinations of double negation, the scope of such negation, and the means by which double negation is expressed. The Spoken BNC 2014 corpus was used as the material for the analysis of the above. The theoretical part of this thesis is based on grammar books and describes the division and use of negation as such. This theoretical foundation is then used as the basis for the analytical part of the thesis. The latter examines different combinations of two negations in a single utterance in an attempt to interpret them, identify factors influencing their interpretation and point out any common features.
