In order to find out responses to the research questions, a depth interview with the clients of the hospital in Tábor was conducted . Objective 1 was fulfilled and the findings showed that the eating habits of the clients were not in compliance with a healthy and regular diet. Objective 2 was fulfilled as well. As confirmed by the research, the weight loss during the preparation for the intestine operation is dependent on the length of the client´s troubles before the operation. Objective 3 was fulfilled. The clients have a notion of the nourishment meaning based on their knowledge. Objective 4 was fulfilled. The clients take nutritional products to supplement the regular diet, which supports recovery and improves organism´s nourishment. The quantitative part of the research was intended to find out knowledge of the nursing staff about possibilities of nourishment. This objective was assigned with two hypotheses. In order to confirm the hypotheses, a questionnaire for nurses working at the inpatient surgical units in the hospital in Tábor, Písek and České Budějovice was carried out. The determined hypotheses 1 and 2 were confirmed. The research resulted in the fact that the nurses working at the inpatient surgical units are informed about nourishment and that when a patient is accepted to the unit, the nurses make a nutritional screening, which is evidenced by 98.7% of positive responses in the questionnaire, and that the nurses monitor the influence of nourishment on the client´s state of health as documented by 90.91% of positive responses of the respondents to the questionnaire. The research showed that nourishment is an integral part of the treatment.
