Jiří Hanuš ABSTRACT: The aim of this thesis is to bring the architecture to the functionalism not only from aesthetic sites evolving architecture of the 20th century, but also from the perspective of emerging technological possibilities in connection with the inventions and needs of people who began to perceive architecture as not only beautiful but also functional , suited to everyday life and comfort. Also the economics of the construction of new buildings and their integration into the existing landscape were emphasized. A part of the text is dedicated to the architecture of the 19th century so we can compare the influence of the industrial revolution and change of the political situation on the creation of new structures, whose elements are used today. In this thesis there are presented some of the outstanding leaders of world and Czech functionalist architecture, who also focused on residential design.
